The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Asunafo South Constituency of the Brong Ahafo Region, has condemned an attack on the Member of Parliament for the area, Eric Opoku, and three others, believed to be members of the opposition National Democratic Congress [NDC].

The Communications Director of the NPP in the constituency, Nana Adusei Opoku, urged the police to bring the perpetrators to book regardless of their party affiliation.

“The NPP in Asunafo South does not support some of these things. In fact, we were the persons who spoke against some these obnoxious acts when we were in opposition,” he told Citi News.

“We solidarise with our MP even though he belongs to the other side of the political divide, we think that some of these things do not help the constituency to move forward. Crime has no colour and you being an NPP member doesn’t exonerate you from the courts if you are found to be the culprit of a crime. So if it happens that some our members are behind this thing, the police should take over and the courts will deal with them,” Nana Adusei Opoku stressed.

The Police in Kukuom are already on a manhunt for the men who carried out the attack on Sunday and vandalized vehicles in the MP’s compound.

Eric Opoku

The unknown assailants attacked and wounded three other persons, believed to be supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress, with cutlasses.

This is the second attack on Eric Opoku’s private residence after a similar incident in December 2017.

The Kukuom District Police Commander, DSP Robert Akwasi Boakye, said his outfit has picked up leads that will aid in the arrest of the suspects.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Minority has vowed to continue to pile pressure on the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the controversial defence cooperation agreement between Ghana and the US.

“We are wholly committed to holding the feet of the NPP and the Akufo-Addo government to the fire of accountability,” the Minority Spokesperson Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini said.

The Sagnarigu Constituency Member of Parliament, Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, Bolga Central constituency MP, Issac Adongo and a former Nanton MP, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, were speaking at a lecture organised by the Tertiary Education Institutions Network (TEIN) of the NDC at the Tamale Technical University.

The Sagnarigu MP, Alhaji A.B.A. Fuseini said the NDC was poised to hold the Akufo-Addo government accountable for their juicy campaign promises that won them power at the 2016 polls.

Alhaji Fusseini stressed that, “Government will see real fire and fury from the NDC in and outside of Parliament inasmuch as demonstrations and the Ghana-US Military Agreement are concerned. I am telling you something, we will make it costly for the NPP to carry forward the agreement.”

“The Executive would have executed the agreement before it was brought to Parliament. We brought it to the attention of the Speaker to no avail. So from day one we have been against it. It is an illegality. It is a walking contradiction and an affront to our constitution. They will tell you our NDC MPs approved this at the Committee level. It is blatant falsehood,” he fumed.

According to him, the NDC and their allies will not relax their resistance to the Ghana-US Army deal.

“The Akufo-Addo government is yet to see the very least of resistance against the Ghana-US Military Agreement from the Minority. We are very ready to spit fire over the controversial deal.”

He hinted of a nationwide protest by the Ghana First Patriotic Front and its allies against the deal.

“The Ghana First Patriotic Front demonstration was the first and smallest in a series of demonstrations that will rock this government. The selling of our sovereignty to the US is something we will hold President Akufo-Addo’s legs to the fire of accountability.”

“When ordinary people do not agree to something, no one can force them to it. The first demonstration by Ghana First Patriotic Front is first of many they are yet to see.”

Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed
Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed

A former MP for the Nanton constituency, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed challenged the government to account for the GHc 28.6 billion borrowed within one year.

“When the NDC was in government the current government led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo requested the NDC government to show them (NPP) prove of their borrowing. Now we are also asking them (NPP) to show us their bloated projects for us to see. They borrowed Ghc28.6 billion in one year and there is nothing to show. Nothing to show for it.”

“When prove was shown in roads, hospitals, schools, housing units among others in a “green book they (NPP) then turned around to question the cost by saying the projects costs were bloated. That’s how they are. NPP, you must know them.”

Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed insinuated that it will be politically suicidal to retain the Nana Akufo Addo government in power at the 2020 polls.

Economy

The MP for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo implored Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to save the economy from total collapse.

He described Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as a “Clueless and incompetent” head of government’s economic management team.

“These people are not only clueless, they are wicked people. Clearly these people are a danger to the future of Ghana’s growing business community.”

MP for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo
MP for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo

Issac Adongo accused government of masterminding the selective collapse of indigenous banks such as the Unibank, Capital Bank and the UT Bank.

“The Bank of Ghana’s selective application of its rules is to favour the parochial interest of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta who is not in favour of some shareholders of adb pledging their shares to uniBank Ghana.”

“Mr. Ofori-Atta and the leadership of the Bank of Ghana are the ones destroying private sector businesses using the advantage of political power to further their financial interest. We will not allow uniBank to be collapsed on the altar of political expediency. I want to encourage those of you here with uniBank accounts to stay put. The bank will bounce back to Duffour and its rightful owners,” Issac Adongo allayed fears.

The Bolgatanga Central MP said Nana Akufo Addo’s government which is clamoring “Ghana beyond Aid” was engaged in reckless borrowing.

“It is only NPP who have borrowed Ghc28.6 billion in one year but remains dry as it is. My worry is that this government is creating rising debt and Ghana is suffering from high rising debt and we are worried this will create problems for this country.”

Alhaj Abdullah Otito Achuliwuor, an aspirant contesting the Upper East Regional Chair of the New Patriotic Party has promised to restructure and reactivate the support base of the party when elected into office.

According to him, the party structures in the region are not well resourced to effectively win the party more parliamentary seats and improve the presidential votes of the party.

Alhaj Achuliwuor, who was speaking at a press conference in Bolgatanga to outline his plans for the party, also said that he would support constituency executives to be “responsive and available to the new paradigm to register new members and increase the region political fortunes.”

“I will embark on initiatives such as one constituency one project where each of the fifteen constituencies will be allocated one big project to be executive by constituency executive of whose proceeds could be used to support campaigns and purchase of pickups to run the party. There shall also be the One-Constituency One -Office project where office complex shall be constructed for all constituencies with a secretariat to conduct party business”.

The initiative, he said will also get the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON); student wing of the party to engage community members as part of membership drive in the Region.

He said he would facilitate the constitution of community education teams among TESCON branches on the various campuses, and support them with logistics to enable them to engage community members and explain government policies, programmes and plans to them.

“I have a strong conviction that TESCON members coming from the academia can influence community decisions to bring on board new members to the fold,” he said.

Alhaj Achuliwor noted that the NPP has not been visible in the region and so its performance has not been satisfactory and said he would re-branded the NPP in the region to make it more attractive to win more members to it side, adding that “my administration will ensure that it is done and done well to speed up the membership drive programme.”

“I am poised to change the perception that the NPP was an Akan party in the region and indicated that it was fair for the electorates to know that the party carved the name New Patriotic Party from the Northern People’s Party which was an extension of the Danquah-Dombo-Busia tradition.

As part of strategies to disabuse the minds of people that the NPP was Akan party, Alhaj Achuliwuor emphasized on the need to make people appreciate some belongingness to clear the perception which their opponents used against it.

He further noted that strategies would be in place to engage party members to reap the fruits of their struggle”.

“I shall commission a survey to take data of our members in the region. This data would look out for artisans and these artisans would be attached to contractors who win contracts. My office shall sign a memorandum of understanding with the contractors to engage member artisans.”

This, according to Alhaj Achuliwor would clear the way and ensure that members who may have the capacity to win contracts are engaged to earn a living and further expand the party’s chances and make it attractive in the Region.

He also hinted that plans were far advanced to bring on board eminent elders of the party with the pedigree to bring all party members together and eliminate issues of factionalism because they were a family even though they deserved and reserved their differences.

The governing New Patriotic Party [NPP], has described as reckless and amateurish a supposed treasonable comment made by the Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho.

“The NPP as a party unreservedly condemns this reckless, amateurish, and misguided statement from Mr. Anyidoho, especially judging from his background as a former presidential spokesperson for former President John Evans Atta Mills, who was hailed by all as a peace-loving personality,” a statement signed by National Youth Organizer of the NPP, Sammy Awuku added.

[contextly_sidebar id=”clOejQv6j0NyPTohy7RuErt9gkbhtumF”]Mr. Anyidoho had in an interview on Accra-based Happy FM, indicated that President Akufo-Addo will be overthrown just like his father and the late Dr. K. A Busia due to the ratification of the controversial defence cooperation agreement between Ghana and the US.

“There will be a civilian coup d’état. There will be a social revolution. We [NDC] are starting it on Wednesday. The movement is starting on Wednesday. Nana Addo will have sleepless nights. He will suffer diarrhea. He said he wanted to be president, but we will make sure he will be fed up on the seat,’’ he added.

Anyidoho has been widely condemned for the comment.

Security agencies must be on alert

The statement from the NPP also urged the security agencies to be on alert to avert any attempt to destabilize the country.

“We call on the security agencies to be on the alert because there is no smoke without fire. The police should invite Mr. Anyidoho over his treasonable comments and inciting Ghanaians to forcibly remove a democratically elected government,” the statement added.

CID picks up Anyidoho for threatening a ‘coup d’état’

Meanwhile, Koku Anyidoho, has been invited by the Criminal Investigations Department [CID] over the comments.

He was picked up at the International Press Centre in Accra on Tuesday during a press conference by a group of opposition political parties known as the Inter-Party Coalition for National Sovereignty, who are kicking against the Ghana-US Defence Cooperation agreement ratified by Parliament last Friday.

Anyidoho should be questioned for ‘treasonable comments’ – Hamid

Government had said on Tuesday that it expects the country’s security agencies to interrogate Mr. Anyidoho for making what it considers treasonable comments.

Speaking to Citi News, the Minister for Information, Mustapha Hamid, condemned Koku Anyidoho’s comments saying “Our [government’s] immediate reaction is utter condemnation of the comments by Koku Anyidoho. We condemn it in the very strongest of terms. When people make treasonable comments, when people allude to the fact that they intend to overthrow a government, it will be important for the security agencies to have a chat with him and to find out how he intends to do that.”

He indicated that, although the NDC has subsequently dissociated itself from Mr. Anyidoho’s comments, it has to take a firmer stance by strongly condemning same.

“Our attention has been drawn to the fact that the General Secretary of the NDC says the party disassociates itself from Koku Anyidoho’s comments, but we think that merely disassociating the NDC from that comment is not enough. We think that the NDC should condemn this in the strongest possible terms.”

The National Democratic Congress [NDC], has stated its opposition to the Ghana-US Defence Cooperation agreement, after its members in Parliament, staged a walkout during the approval.

Minority to join demo against ‘US military base’ agreement

The Minority in Parliament has already served notice that on Wednesday, it will join some Ghanaians in Accra to demonstrate against the recently ratified Ghana-US Defence Cooperation agreement.

In a statement copied to citifmonline.com, the caucus described the agreement as a betrayal of the Ghanaian people by the Akufo-Addo government.

The Ranking Member of the Communications Committee and Member of Parliament for Sagnarigu constituency, Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, who signed the statement, said they have taken a decision to “unanimously and without reservation resolved to support and join Ghanaians who will be demonstrating tomorrow [Wednesday].

Below is the full statement from the NPP

NPP CONDEMNS RECKLESS STATEMENT OF KOKU ANYIDOHO

It has come to the notice of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the Deputy General Secretary of opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Koku Anyidoho is inciting Ghanaians to revolt against the government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The NDC loose-talker in an interview with Accra-based Happy FM was emphatic that a nationwide demonstration under the sole sponsorship of his party and being led by the Ghana First Patriotic Front (GFPF) is the beginning of activities to stage a coup d’etat against the NPP government which was democratically elected in 2016.

The NPP as a party unreservedly condemns this reckless, amateurish, and misguided statement from Mr. Anyidoho, especially judging from his background as a former presidential spokesperson for former President John Evans Atta Mills, who was hailed by all as a peace-loving personality.

We call on the security agencies to be on the alert because there is no smoke without fire. The police should invite Mr Anyidoho over his treasonable comments and inciting Ghanaians to forcibly remove a democratically elected government.

We call on all Ghanaians to condemn this reckless statement of Mr. Anyidoho because 25 years of uninterrupted democratic rule under the Fourth Republic did not come cheap.

We must guard our democracy jealously and must not allow any disappointed and peeved Politician feeling the pinch of being in opposition to take our destiny for granted.

The security network must be on high alert on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 since the NDC is bent on using the demonstration to destabilize the country. We will resist any attempt by the opposition NDC to make Ghana ungovernable.

The rule of law must work and everyone must respect the law. Ghanaians voted massively for President Akufo-Addo to rule for four years and we must respect that.

If the NDC has alternate views on how this nation should be governed, there are constitutional avenues for doing so, other than inciting the citizenry to a coup d’etat.

Anyone who will dare disturb the enviable peace and order in Ghana will be met squarely.

The Ashanti Regional Youth Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Brogya Genfi, has sued government over its defence cooperation agreement with the United States.

Brogya Genfi is, among other things, praying the Court to “set aside” the agreement on grounds that it is “not in the national interest of Ghana, and contravenes articles (1 (2), 2, 11, 33, 125, 135, 140, 75 and 73 of the 1992 constitution.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”JLtqhlVeZ29Mj0GC2uTydcVo2dLm5Myf”] Mr. Genfi is demanding eight reliefs in all, including a “declaration that the word ‘ratify’ used within the provisions of Article 75 of the 1992 constitution is a term of art which has a true meaning of incorporating international law and treaties into the domestic legal system of the Republic of Ghana and not prior approval or approval.”

Another relief being sought by the plaintiff is a declaration that the “ratification by Parliament of the supposed agreement between Ghana and the Government of United States of America on Defence Cooperation, the Status of United States Forces, and Access to and use of agreed facilities and areas in the Republic of Ghana (hereinafter referred to as Defence Co-operation Agreement) on March 24, 2018, when the supposed agreement had not been executed by the President or person authorized by the President as provided for by Article 75 of the 1992 constitution, is contrary to the said Article 75 of the 1992 constitution and same is null and void.”

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Gloria Akuffo and Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, are the defendants in the case.

The suit comes days after Parliament ratified the pact despite stiff opposition from the Minority.

The approval was done by only Majority members because the Minority members staged a walkout during the debate on the floor of Parliament.

With the agreement ratified, it means that the US troops will among other things be exempted from paying taxes on equipment that are brought to Ghana as well as use Ghana’s radio spectrum for free.

The troops and their equipment will also have unhindered access to the US forces and their equipment.

Although many Ghanaians have expressed resentment over the clauses of the agreement, the Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, said the agreement is in the best interest of Ghana.

The Government has consistently explained that it was only respecting the existing Status of Forces Agreement with the US signed since 1998 and reviewed in 2015, under the previous NDC administration.

But the NDC Minority has downplayed this argument saying the agreement as existed in the past, did not have the same clauses like the current one that gives the US unlimited access to Ghana’s military facilities.

The US Embassy in Ghana has also explained that it is only planning joint security exercises with Ghana, which will require that US military personnel are allowed access to Ghana’s military facilities and that they are not building a military base.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has slammed critics of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government who have accused the administration of consistently making outlandish promises despite not fulfilling previously-made pledges, over a year into their four-year tenure.

A section of Ghanaians has been trolling the administration for making a lot of promises, with a number of people on social media tagging the President as ‘King Promise.’

[contextly_sidebar id=”UUgGcJDCYUGxxlsv2duim6YrmoGiEUx8″]But speaking at the launch of the restoration of teacher trainee allowances at the Accra College of Education, Dr. Bawumia described the achievements of President Akufo-Addo in his tenure as puzzling to critics.

“As you know, politicians are not really known or expected to keep their promises. Usually, when you make a promise it is viewed very skeptically as maybe an attempt at a 419 scheme to hoodwink the voters and so over time the electorate has grown to be very skeptical because by and large it is argued that we make promises and do not keep them but when you look at our government since Nana Akuffo Addo has been President, it has been a year now and some three months, I think we will have to start taking the promises of people like Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo very seriously.”

The Vice President further touted the administration’s performance in stabilizing the economy saying that the once struggling economy under President Mahama is now the fastest growing economy in the world.

He indicated that the NPP government, despite inheriting a struggling economy from the previous administration, introduced viable policies such as the free SHS programme and also restored the allowances for trainee teachers and nurses, both of which they had promised to do.

“The President is driven by a passion to change Ghana and leave a legacy for this country so he promised against all odds and against the economic constraints of our time when we could not even pay teacher and nursing trainee allowance or keep up with our statutory payments as an economy, of introducing free SHS and in September last year and he fulfilled the promise.”

Gov’t promises

Other key promises made by the NPP government since assuming office include the construction of a total of five hundred and seventy (570) dams in the three northern regions in fulfillment of NPP Government’s manifesto pledge to facilitate community-owned and managed small-scale irrigation facilities across the country, popularly known as “One Village One Dam”, and the rolling out of processes for the issuance of the new National Identification Cards in April, 2018.

An Upper East Regional Chairman aspirant of the New Patriotic Party, Filson Awankua, says his leadership will ensure the party increases its parliamentary seats in the region and create job opportunities for the citizenry.

Mr. Awankua, said the few [3] NPP parliamentary seats in the region was due to the poor leadership and disunity among the regional executives.

He said he’s motivated to lead the party at the regional level in order to unite all of its members to collaborate to win at least six parliamentary seats in the region at the next general elections in 2020.

Speaking to Citi News after picking his nomination forms at the party office in Bolgatanga, Mr. Awankua said he was optimistic that his leadership will ensure the region gets its fair share of the national cake.

“I am in this race because during the 2016 elections, I was in the Upper East Region campaigning for the NPP and I saw some gaping holes; there was no party unity and parliamentary candidates were not resourced adequately and party chairmen were struggling to work. So I am in this race to close the disunity in the party and to win more seats.”

“But having worked with top NPP stalwarts I decided that, with the experience and networks I have established over the years I can develop the NPP in the region,” he said.

Mr. Awankua said the region needed a chairman with good working relationship and lobbying skills to bring about the needed development to the region.

He emphasized that an NPP under him in the region, will ensure that financial resources are made available to help the region to secure significant votes at the next polls.

Filson Awankua, who is an engineer by training, said through his network in the corporate world, he will nurture and create job opportunities for citizens in the region.

Mr. Awankua appealed to all delegates in the upcoming regional executive elections of the NPP slated for April 2018,  to vote massively for him to lead the party to victory come 2020.

He is going into the contest alongside incumbent party chairman, Ibrahim Mutala Mohammed, Alhaji Abdallah Achulou Otito, Anthony Namoo and Agongo Joseph.

In what appears to be a response to Pastor Mensah Otabil’s assertion that he does not pay attention to local media content due to excessive political discussions, and instead chooses to watch animals on Television, former President John Dramani Mahama, has described that posture as hypocritical.

The Founder of the International Central Gospel Church has come under severe attack since he made the comments that some have considered offensive.

[contextly_sidebar id=”eRey9V2T1RBxvKVEmR4P0pHyRQ92txsp”]”Suddenly, everything is fine. Some say they don’t watch TV again, they watch animals. In our time, they were not watching animals. They were listening to the political discussion. Now in their time, there is too much politics. You will be tired because your darling [government] is super incompetent so they are tired of hearing the analysis. That is the hypocrisy we face.”

In Mr. John Mahama’s view, there appears to be silence from both civil society groups and religious leaders on matters of national importance.

He feels that these entities, who were hitherto ardent critics of his National Democratic Congress (NDC), are treating the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) with kid gloves.

Speaking to some supporters of the NDC in the UK, the former President said those who accused him of running a “family and friends” government have been silent on the perceived nepotism under President Nana Akufo-Addo.

“I never ever thought that Ghanaians would tolerate the levels of nepotism in government that we see today… now today look at it. That is the new standard and civil society is quiet. Religious leaders are quiet. When NDC comes the next time, must the standards of national government differ because of who is in the presidency? That is the hypocrisy of our politics.”

Mr. John Mahama extended his criticism to the media and even traditional leaders.

“Something is pardonable when one government is in power but when another is in power it’s unpardonable. Things that the media would have been so loud about under my administration, it happens every day and it’s like it’s business as usual. That is the hypocrisy of our civil society and religious and traditional leaders, everybody is quiet, suddenly some say they don’t watch TV anymore and that they watch animals,” Mr. Mahama said.

‘Hypocrites and parasites’

The NDC’s Deputy General Secretary, Koku Anyidoho, also had his say on the perceived hypocrisy with a much harsher assessment on Ghanaweb’s online show, 21 minutes.

He described such persons as hypocrites and parasites.

“Suddenly, some pastors say they watch animals. It is animals that they watch… Yes, you will watch animals. You will watch more animals. If NDC is in power, that one, you will listen to human beings to prepare your sermon. But when NPP is in power and they are doing horrible things, because you cannot preach these sermons, you are watching animals. He should actually go and preach his sermon in the zoo to animals. Hypocrites and parasites.”

The Brong Ahafo Regional Branch of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has condemned government  for what it calls the “persecution of the immediate past CEO of the Ghana Cocoa Board, Dr. Stephen Opuni.”

“This action we consider to be political persecution of the highest order,” a statement from the branch said.

[contextly_sidebar id=”4rzJUKfM1mt1rc2DcVdCQ4aXxL6xmWyl”]The Brong Ahafo NDC joins the Ashanti branch of the NDC, and the party’s National Organizer, Kofi Adams, who have described the trial as a witch-hunt.

The Attorney General has filed 27 counts including causing financial loss to the state against Dr. Opuni and one Seidu Agongo, CEO of Zeera Group of Companies and Agricult Ghana Limited, beneficiaries of a supposed fraudulent fertilizer supply contract worth GHc43,120,000.

In the view of the Brong Ahafo NDC, the government has clearly “initiated some selective political persecution against his [Opuni’s ] person.”

In a statement signed by the Regional Secretary of the party, Dennis Yeboah Twumasi, the party said the government was engaged in “political propaganda, vilification, open hatred and outright persecution.”

“His [Opuni’s] prosecution only seeks to prevent and reduce his standing in politics based on very spurious allegations of procurement and administrative infractions. This has been preceded by a flurry of media headlines, subjecting him to an open-air political trial and a trial in the court of NPP public opinion supported with earlier pressure from some leading Members of New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Government, to commence prosecution of former NDC Government appointees including Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni for alleged acts of corruption for over a year now.”

The NDC branch, however said it remains confident that Dr. Opuni will be exonerated if he goes through a fair trial.

“We Members of the Brong Ahafo Regional Branch of the NDC strongly believe that Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni will be exonerated and acquitted by the court if only the trial follows due process and is conducted by a court of competent jurisdiction in an open and transparent manner.”

PERSECUTION OF Dr. STEPHEN OPUNI BASED ON POLITICAL OPINION

It was widely reported in the media towards the close of last week about the intention of the NPP Government to prosecute Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni the immediate past Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD). This action we consider to be political persecution of the highest order.

In this regard, we Members of the Brong Ahafo NDC express our strong support for the former hard-working Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD, Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni. We clearly see that the Government has initiated some selective political persecution against his person. His prosecution only seeks to prevent and reduce his standing in politics based on very spurious allegations of procurement and administrative infractions. This has been preceded by a flurry of media headlines, subjecting him to an open-air political trial and a trial in the court of NPP public opinion supported with earlier pressure from some leading Members of New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Government to commence prosecution of Former NDC Government Appointees including Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni for alleged acts of corruption for over a year now.

Interestingly, the flood of responses from Government Spokespersons and its party Communicators on Dr. Opuni’s prosecution has given rise for people to question the role that the NPP’s political persecution plays in an open and democratic society. We believe strongly that it is the responsibility of the State to investigate and fight corruption in the public interest. That is fair.

What this means is that, Government Communicators can only serve the interests of the citizenry by putting out truthful and relevant information when it comes to protecting the public purse. But what the NPP is doing is different. They are engaged in political propaganda, vilification, open hatred and outright persecution.

We entreat the general Public and Members of the NDC not to lend credence to NPP’s political agenda. How come that charges leveled against an accused person are leaked to the media even before they are filed in court? It is simply a well-planned, rehearsed and choreographed game in which they have targeted some influential former Appointees of the NDC Government, including Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni for humiliation and harassment. We consider this to be most unfair as he is being condemned even before the trial.

We Members of the Brong Ahafo Regional Branch of the NDC strongly believe that Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni will be exonerated and acquitted by the court if only the trial follows due process and is conducted by a court of competent jurisdiction in an open and transparent manner. We have confidence in our judiciary, and given the opportunity, they will deliver a fair and satisfactory judgment based on the facts and evidence adduced before them.
In the meantime, we declare our unconditional support for Dr. Stephen Kwabena Opuni as he is presumed innocent until proven otherwise by the court.

Signed

Dennis Yeboah Twumasi
Regional Secretary, B/A

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), will from March 20 to 24, 2018, open nomination for its members seeking positions at the regional level of the party.

Addressing a news conference in Accra on Thursday, March 15, 2015, the acting General Secretary of the NPP, John Boadu, said the regional level elections “will be held from the April 21st to 24th,” across the country.

He noted that adequate measures have been put in place to ensure a successful election.

[contextly_sidebar id=”ctGV0f2sbiOkbEPc8tYyftXyid0ZIpRO”]“Nominations shall be open from Monday, 20th to Friday 24th March, 2018. Vetting shall be held from 27th to 29th March, 2018. Vetting results shall be released not later than 31st March, 2018,” he added.

Troubles at NPP polling station and constituency executives elections

The NPP has already held elections for its polling station and constituency executives.

However, elections could not be held in some constituencies and polling stations because of some unresolved issues.

John Boadu at the press conference said they have been able to make strides in resolving such issues, adding that about 14 constituencies were unable to elect their executives.

“…as we speak, some 94% of the constituencies in the country have been able to successfully conduct this exercise and elected constituency executives. We are left with 14 constituencies out of the 275. It is however gratifying to say that the party has made significant strides at resolving the issues in the remaining 5%.”

“By way of regional breakdown, there are 4 of such constituencies in the Greater Accra region comprising Ablekuma North, Ablekuma South, Adenta and Okakoi South. Aside Okakoi South which is still outstanding, we have been able to resolve the issues in the 3 constituencies and same have been taken out of court. In the northern region, we have six outstanding constituencies comprising Bimbilla, Daboya, Karaga, Nalerigu, Nyonyo and Tatale. Aside Bimbilla and Daboya where there are security issues, the other 4 are being resolved.”

In the Western Region, the acting General Secretary said the party has been able to resolve issues in the four troubled constituencies which included “Shama, Kwesimintsim and Sekondi, with the exception of Elembelle.”

He added that “the party has ordered for fresh polling station elections in the three constituencies which have started in earnest.”

“Finally, in the Central Region, we still have three outstanding constituencies comprising Cape Coast South, Ajumako Enyam and Awutu Senya West. The national steering committee, at its last meeting, constituted a 3-member committee comprising Sammy Awuku (the chairman of the committee), Evans Nimako and Bob Agbontor to look at the issues in all the outstanding constituencies across the country and advise accordingly,” he added.
