Thousands of mourners, including friends, family, and colleagues of the late Asempa FM presenter, Kwadwo Asare Baffuor Acheampong popularly known as KABA gathered at the forecourt of the State House in Accra to bid him farewell today [Saturday] as he was laid to rest.

The mourners, clad in red and black, could not hold back their tears as they filed past the lifeless body of the former presenter.

Some of them, who were still in a state of shock said they were yet to come to terms with his death.

KABA’s widow, Valentina Acheampong, with whom he had a daughter, said in her tribute that she could not believe KABA was dead.

KABA’s widow, Valentina Acheampong (M)

“What should I tell Nana Yaa when she asks of Dada?…You made fatherhood effortless and a sight to behold…you made me the happiest woman…There was never a dull moment with you. You were the perfect husband anyone would wish for. I can’t believe you are gone but I take consolation in the fact that you are in the bosom of our Lord. I am glad you knew the Lord,” she said.

Read the full tribute below:

“Good morning MaryVal Happy anniversary! Wow, So soon it’s been a year. A year of God’s love, favour, mercy and abundance of Grace.

Exactly a year today you formally agreed to be my wife and me your husband.  I’m grateful I chose you and you chose me: you know why; because in the last one year, I’ve had no reason to ask why I married and to you. As far as I am concerned I made the right decision.
In the last one year, God has also blessed this family with the miracle baby Nana Yaa. What else can a man ask for in marriage?

So as we mark this milestone, I want to say thank you for choosing me. But it hasn’t all been a smooth sailing experience. We’ve had our own peculiar challenges and even through it all you stood by me……sicknesses, financial, my family, my mum, and most of all from me.

I know you sometimes complain I don’t listen to you or that when you speak I don’t let you finish and I cut in I know sometimes it’s bothersome to you. I promise to make amends. Forgive me if I hurt you in any way.

In the years ahead, I can only promise with God’s help to be a better husband and a father in all spheres.

There’s only one thing which lacks in our journey, getting closer to Christ. We must take steps to formalize our relationship with him again soon as we leave this place God willing to our house.

There’s only one thing I ask of you; don’t give up on me Don’t give up on us Never stop praying for us- Myself, Yourself and Nana Yaa.

When I go wrong please correct me Have never stopped loving you. Ours was not a mistake It’s the envy of all Let’s guard it jealously If I were to be asked again the same question KABA do you take Valentina Ofori-Afriyie as your wedded wife? I’ll answer that a thousand times, Yes!!! Happy anniversary MaryVal Love you’’

This is what you wrote to me on our anniversary and how come the dream has been cut short? You are an exceptional human being. God-fearing, lover of God, humble, respectful, tolerant, understanding, smart, and caring no wonder the first word that came out of Nana Yaa’s little lips was Dada.

You made fatherhood effortless and a sight to behold. You made me the happiest woman. There was never a dull moment with you. You were the perfect husband anyone would wish for.

I can’t believe u are gone but I take consolation in the fact that you are in the bosom of our Lord. I am glad you knew the lord.

Me Kwadwo as I called you and your response was MVOAS the abbreviation of my name. Fare thee well sweet Joe.

I promise to continue to pray for us, can you also promise me you will do same?
What should I tell Nana Yaa when she asks of Dada?

Me Kwadwo can I ever stop asking WHY?

But I take consolation in the word of God in the Bible in your favourite book Philippians 4:13 which says I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me…

I will also teach Nana Yaa to memorize Philippians 4:19 which says …and my God shall supply all my needs according to His riches in Glory by Christ Jesus.

I will also remember to tell her what a wonderful father and husband you were. It’s unfortunate we couldn’t have more, but like everyone tells me the Lord knows best. You will continually be in our hearts.

Thank you for being a huge part of my life. My Husband, My friend, My Love, rest well in the bosom of the Almighty!!!

Acting New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman, Freddie Blay, has said he’s deeply shocked by the death of Kwadwo Asare Baffour Acheampong, popularly known as KABA,  considering he had been booked by the ace broadcaster for an interview today [Tuesday] November 21.

The Host of Asempa FM’s late afternoon political show, Eko Sii Sen, died on Saturday, November 18, 2017, after he was rushed to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

The cause of KABA’s sudden demise is unknown, but there are reports he may have suffered some form of attack from a health condition.

Mr. Freddie Blay, in a statement, consoled the family and the media fraternity; stating that KABA executed his mandate as a journalist brilliantly and was greatly admired by many.

He said: “The loss of this brilliant personality will leave a gaping hole in the family, the electronic media and the entire country, for we have lost a rising legend.”

Below is Freddie Blay’s statement eulogizing KABA

Kwadwo Asare Baffour Acheampong, (KABA) was a greatly admired journalist and his death has come as a big blow to all of us. The loss of this brilliant personality will leave a gaping hole in the family, the electronic media and the entire country, for we have lost a rising legend.

Throughout his career, KABA has made substantial contributions to journalism using his powerful intellect and communication skills in dealing with politicians of various shades of opinions. He always had a knack to punch hard enough to bring the best or the worst in any person he encountered on radio.

I am more shaken, because, he and I were supposed to have met today, 21st November, 2017, for an interview as well as discuss other matters, only to be informed of the shock of his untimely death.

My heart goes out to his cherished family, to his fraternity, Ghana Journalist Association (GJA), to Asempa FM, the springboard to his short-lived greatness and to the entire Media industry.

Gone too soon, KABA .Till we all meet again.

Rest in perfect peace.

President Akufo-Addo, his Vice, former president John Mahama among other recognized individuals and groups, have all expressed their condolence in separate comments.

Multimedia Memorial Service for KABA

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, on Monday joined a Memorial Service which had staff of the multimedia group, politicians, journalists, family and sympathizers in attendance.

Below is the full statement by the GJA

GJA CONSOLES BEREAVED FAMILY OF KWABENA ASARE BAFFOUR ACHEAMPONG OF ACCRA-BASED ASEMPA FM FAME

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) is utterly shocked to hear the sudden death of ace broadcast journalist, Kwabena Asare Baffour Acheampong, popularly known as KABA, of Accra-based Asempa FM and Adom FM & TV. He was reported to have died in the early hours of Saturday, November 18, 2017, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra after a short illness.

KABA was a very astute broadcast journalist whose popular political programme Ekosi Sen on

Asempa FM helped to expand the frontiers of freedom of expression and also deepen the country’s fledgling democracy. He was very open-minded and fair to all persons who featured on his programmes, a unique disposition that endeared him to participants and listeners, irrespective of their political, social, religious and ethnic orientation.

Upon hearing the shocking demise of KABA, the GJA immediately dispatched a national executive member to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in the early hour of that fateful day to confirm the story. Later on Saturday, the GJA representative was also at the residence of KABA to commiserate with the family and also participate in a meeting between the Management of the Multimedia Group and the bereaved family to discuss plans for the one week celebration of our departed brother.

Indeed, the death of KABA is a big blow to the Multimedia Group, the GJA and Ghana as a whole. It is in such sense of irredeemable loss that the GJA expresses its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, especially his wife, Valentina Ofori Afriyie and little daughter, Nana Yaa, as well as the entire Multimedia family. The Association wishes to pledge its continuous support to the organization of the funeral of KABA in order to give him a befitting burial.

There is no doubt that KABA has paid his dues to journalism in Ghana and served his country so well. The GJA believes his death is only divine. And so in this grieving moment, and in utmost solemnity and sobriety, the GJA calls on all friends, families and loved ones to reflect on the good works of KABA in order to take a cue from them, rather than allow the pain of loss to overwhelm their thoughts and utterances.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has described as “wild”, “unsubstantiated” and “insensitive” comments made by Asempa FM presenter, Kojo Asare Baffour Acheampong popularly known as KABA on the death of Major Maxwell Mahama.

According to the GAF, it was worried that such misleading information had been peddled in the media and it is ready to provide clarity on circumstances surrounding the former officer’s death.

The late Major Maxwell Mahama was lynched and partly burnt by some residents of Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region on 29th May, 2017, on suspicion of being an armed robber.

Some reports suggested that the late military man was attacked and killed by the residents because he was in the town to stop illegal mining; an activity most of the residents were engaged in, but that was later discredited.

The host of Asempa FM’s ‘Ekosii sen’ radio show, KABA, however said on his show after the incident that the late army officer was going to meet some illegal miners in the area when he was ambushed by the town folks and killed.

According to him, some soldiers had earlier attempted to meet with the illegal miners and were nearly killed, but Major Mahama who was unaware of the earlier incident also proceeded to agree on a meeting with them without adequate protection.

But the Military high command has said KABA’s claims are false.

In a statement signed by the Director of Public Relations of the Ghana Armed Forces, Colonel Aggrey Quarshie, said investigations were still ongoing hence the need to refrain from making such baseless statements.

Read the full statement below:

In the aftermath of the unfortunate death of Major Maxwell Adam Mahama, a number of unsubstantiated assertions have been made by Kwodwo Asare Baffour Acheampong (KABA) on Asempa FM on Monday 5 June 2017.

We wish to state categorically that the claims by KABA that the late Major Mahama was initially deployed at Denkyira-Boase from January to March 2017 are totally FALSE.  The first time Maj Mahama was deployed to the location was 9 May 2017.  The assertion that the late officer was due to write exams and was relieved by a Lieutenant is also FALSE.  Major Mahama passed his promotion examination in June 2015 (2 years ago).  On the contrary, it is the Lieutenant who is writing his promotion examination in June 2017 (this year) for which reason Major Mahama was deployed on relieving duties.

Regarding the circumstances of his death, it is also important to place on record that investigations are still on-going and therefore it would be both prejudicial and insensitive to make wild, unsubstantiated comments at this stage. The issue of the 4 Warrant Officers who are facing disciplinary investigation is also unconnected with the current case and we advise that no attempt should be made to draw any linkages.

GAF wishes to advise media personnel to be mindful of their sources of information especially during this period in order not to misinform the public. They should pay due regard to the sensitivity of the deceased family in these trying moments.

GAF therefore wishes to reiterate that the allegations made by KABA on his programme which has been recorded and being circulated online, social media networks and some mainstream electronic and print media outlets, are misleading.

GAF once again reiterates its readiness to clarify matters and give GAF’s side of issues to media personnel to avert the publication and broadcast of misleading information which has long term security implications.
