The outspoken Northern Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu, has advised the party’s delegates to be mindful of “sycophants” vying for positions at the constituency and regional levels.

According to him, the NPP needs to retain bold and decisive leaders whose commitment and vigilance contributed to the party’s victory at the 2016 polls.

Daniel Bugri Naabu was addressing the newly elected executives of the Tamale North Constituency at his private Fuo residence in Tamale.

He emphasized that it would be politically suicidal for the delegates to replace his winning team at the regional elections.

Bugri Naabu advises NPP delegates to reject sycophants

He called for collaboration between the winners and the losers to ensure the NPP’s victory at the 2020 polls.

Daniel Bugri Naabu posited that the NPP was poised to win all 31 seats under the agenda “Operation win all seats in the Northern Region.”

Chairman Bugri Naabu, who is seeking reelection, urged the delegates to retain him to accomplish his unfinished agenda.

Under his watch, the NPP then in opposition won 13 out of the 31 seats in the Northern Region.

Constituency elections

For security reasons, five constituencies in the Northern Region have been isolated from the nationwide constituency elections which started on Sunday February, 24, 2018.

These comprised Yunyoo, Bimbila, Daboya/Mankarigu, Nalerigu/Gambaga and Karaga which have been identified as political hotspots.

The first phase of the elections were held in 24 out of the 31 constituencies, and these included the four main Tamale Central, Tamale North, Tamale South and Sagnarigu.

At the end of the polls, majority of the old executives who sought to retain their seats were rejected.

The second phase scheduled for Sunday February 25, 2018, will be held in Salaga South, Salaga North and Zabzugu constituencies.

The NPP Northern Regional Communications Director, Issahaque A. Latif told Citi News that the elections would be conducted in 2,676 polling stations.

He described the first phase as generally peaceful, and anticipated that the whole exercise will be devoid of upheavals.

The governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Northern Regional Chairman, Daniel Bugri Naabu, has rubbished some media reports alleging that he is mobilizing some NPP youth to demonstrate against President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo over some of his appointments in the region.

The said story published on Ghanaweb and replicated on other portals, implied that the outspoken NPP regional Chairman paid a cross section of the party’s youth to stage the intended demonstration.

[contextly_sidebar id=”NFuK8YbnZPoj2msONPNZEANd1Lpbk12E”]But Daniel Bugri Naabu in a Citi News interview described the said publication as a figment of someone’s imagination.

According to him, the botched demonstration was intended to call for the removal of the Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Saeed, and the Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive, Iddrisu Musah Superior.

He explained that some angry party youth stormed his private Fuo residence and petitioned him over the two top government officials, alleging misconduct on their part.

He said the youth threatened to demonstrate against them today (Wednesday) October 4, ahead of President Nana Addo’s three-day official tour of the region beginning Friday October 6.

“As the regional Chairman, they presented their petition to me which I issued a cover note and forwarded to the regional minister and the Mayor after an emergency meeting with my colleague regional executives.”

He expressed shock in the subtle attempt to tag him as the President’s saboteur in the region.

Daniel Bugri Naabu pleaded with the angry party youth to remain calm as immediate steps are taken to address their concerns.

He gave the assurance that nothing untoward will happen before, during and after the President’s visit.

A group affiliated to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) calling itself the Coalition of NPP Youth in the Northern Region, is on a regional campaign dubbed, “Retain Chairman Bugri.”

The group’s mission is to convince the NPP regional Electoral College to renew Daniel Bugri Naabu’s mandate.

The group is persuaded by the outspoken NPP Northern Regional Chairman, Daniel Bugri Naabu’s unprecedented record of leading the party to win  13 out of the 31 parliamentary seats at the 2016 polls.

[contextly_sidebar id=”oWPxYwliylvRzU1jtCuJWo6dL9G5SkNP”]The group’s leader, Adam Mohammed Amin, in a Citi News interview posited that, any attempt to replace Daniel Bugri Naabu at the ensuing regional delegates congress would be politically suicidal.

“As a Coalition of NPP Youth in Northern Region, we have declared our unflinching support for our time tested and astute regional Chairman, Daniel Bugri Naabu to continue his good works.”

“Daniel Bugri Naabu has not only increased the Presidential votes in the Northern Region but has also won more Parliamentary seats for the NPP at the 2016 elections which none of his predecessors has done since 1992.”

“If Chairman Bugri Naabu can achieve this record within just four years, then it means he can do much better when retained as the Northern Regional Chairman,” Adam Mohammed Amin emphasized.

He claimed that Daniel Bugri Naabu is better placed within the Dombo-Busia-Danquah political tradition in the Northern Region than any of his competitors.

“The track record of Chairman Bugri Naabu as a founding member of the NPP, Chairman of Northern Region Contractors Association and owner of the previous Inter Royals Hotel in Tamale among other credentials is unmatched.”

“Chairman Bugri Naabu is a benevolent person who serves as a father for all by using his own resources to help the needy regardless of their political, religious or ethnic affiliation, and that is why we have vowed to work very hard to ensure his reelection.”

The governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Northern Regional Chairman, Daniel Bugri Naabu, has cautioned party youth against violent protest over the selection of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executive nominees.

His caution follows the destruction of party paraphernalia on Friday June 23, by some angry NPP youth in the West Mamprusi District (Walewale).

[contextly_sidebar id=”4TglbYZCl3jTPLsSXvs8W5RSFo2OwMck”]Their action was to register their disapproval of the nomination of Abu Amadu as the District Chief Executive nominee for the area.

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo was compelled to nominate Abu Amadu following the previous DCE nominee, Saaka Sayuti’s outright rejection by assembly members.

Citi News gathered that, the rampaging youth were provoked by Saaka Sayuti’s replacement. They have thus pleaded with President Nana Addo to drop Abu Amadu and renominate Saaka Sayuti.

But the outspoken NPP Northern Regional Chairman, Daniel Bugri Naabu, called for ceasefire in a Citi News interview.

He asked the rampaging youth to exercise maximum restraint by respecting the President’s decision. He advised all aggrieved party supporters to use the appropriate party structures to settle their  grievances with party leadership and the appointing authority.

Daniel Bugri Naabu assured them that their grievances would be communicated to the President. Several fierce protests have characterized the nomination of MMDCEs across the country.

A similar protest led to a political deadlock between some NPP supporters and the Savelugu/Nantong Municipal Chief Executive which was recently resolved by a Presidential mediation team.

Social commentator, Sydney Casely Hayford, believes the Gender Minister, Otiko Afisa Djaba, and the Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu should have been dismissed for their recent public spat.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Citi FM Mr. Casely Hayford said their war of words disgraced the authority vested in them, as they exhibited gross indiscipline.

He opined that, if the NPP “had a strong enough backbone. If they were sure of themselves and secure in the way they handled affairs, those two should have been dismissed. With Bugri, it will be a little difficult because he is elected, but to remove Otiko as a minister would not be difficult.”

Instead, as part of the fall out of the public fracas between Madam Otiko and Bugri Naabu, the National Council of the NPP directed all party officials serving in government to resign. Madam Otiko and Bugri Naabu were also ordered to apologize officially with written letters.

otiko-bugri-naabu

Among other things, their back and forth saw Bugri Naabu allege that the Upper East Regional Minister, Rockson Bukari, and Otiko Djaba, were involved in the murder the late Upper East Regional Chairman of the NPP, Adams Mahama.

The genesis of the tension, as we know, could be traced to the confusion at Modern City hotel in Tamale, where Bugri Naabu stormed and disrupted a meeting organised by Madam Otiko for some women, after an alleged dispute over the appointment of a Northern Regional Coordinator for the School Feeding Programme.

Ghana deserves better brand of politicians

Mr. Casely Hayford remained befuddled by the way the spat between the two NPP executives escalated, describing it as childish and ultimately an erosion of the offices they held.

“We are trying to create a certain quality of politician who will go into Parliament or be in a ministerial position where we will respect what they say and believe what they say. What this has done is to discredit them and discredit the whole political class because all that we are seeing now is childish behaviour.”

“I can’t for the life of me understand why two such prominent politicians in this country who expect to be respected for what they do, and expect us to listen to them, should go about saying such things about each other in public. These are a pair of very undisciplined persons. Even if you have something to say about that person, you should not do it on air. This was like a Montie three thing.”

The “monster” in the Minister of Gender and Social Protection, Otiko Djaba, is “eating up”the New Patriotic Party (NPP), private legal practitioner and member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba has said.

Mr. Amaliba believes the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) failure to rebuke Otiko Djaba for criticizing former President Mahama during the elections, created what he calls a “monster”in the Minister, which is now affecting the party.

[contextly_sidebar id=”0rSv62gRdv4ETd2Y13PzTARqDR5ggsdr”]“When she attacked President Mahama and the Minority asked her to retract she refused, and the NPP hailed her as a brave woman. When you create a monster to eat up your opponents after the monster has eaten up your opponents, it will turn to you.”

On the same platform, Mr. Casley Hayford also criticized both the Minister and the Northern Regional Chairman, Bugri Naabu, over the fracas, saying they could have chosen a more dignified approach to resolving their issues.

Casley Hayford believes the development clearly shows the two are “undisciplined.”

“This issue between Bugri Naabu and Otiko Djaba for me is the most distasteful thing that you can have in our social discourse. I cannot understand why two such prominent politicians who should be respected for what they do should go about saying such things about each other in public. These are a pair of undisciplined persons. This is like a Montie three thing. You should respect each other enough to call each other and sort this out.”

Bugri Naabu and Otiko Djaba have been bickering in the past few days, exchanging abusive words on various media platforms in what many have described as a serious blot on the government’s image.

Otiko Afisa Djaba in a media engagement last week, accused the NPP Northern Regional Chairman, Bugri Naabu, of receiving goats and cows from individuals with the promise of securing appointments in public office for them.

Mr. Naabu in a subsequent media interview caused a stir when he reportedly suggested that Otiko Djaba and the current Upper East Regional Chairman, were involved in the murder of the former NPP Upper East Regional Chairman, Adams Mahama.

The apology from Gender Minister, Otiko Afisa Djaba, and the Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu, should not be accepted by Ghanaians, according to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking to Citi News, the NDC’s Deputy General Secretary, Koku Anyidoho, said, “Ghana is bigger than the NPP, so their internal apology means nothing to the larger Ghanaian populace…”

He said the NPP could swoop in and pretend on the matter, but urged Ghanaians not to accept “the lame apologies from within the belly of the elephant.”

otiko-bugri-naabu

His comments follow a directive by the National Council of the NPP for Bugri Naabu and Otiko Djaba to apologize with written letters, after their public spat which birthed claims that the Upper East Regional Minister, Rockson Bukari, was involved in the murder the late Upper East Regional Chairman of the NPP, Adams Mahama.

The National Council also directed all party officials serving in government to resign as soon as possible.

But Mr. Anyidoho said the country would be better served by President Nana Akufo-Addo forcing Otiko Djaba to resign from government, warning that “these utterances from his officials are the beginning of the end of his government.”

He however said President Akufo-Addo “will not have the courage to do so – mark my words.”

NPP trying to bury murder claims

Mr. Anyidoho also said the NPP was by this action covering up the allegations pertinent to the case involving the murder of Adams Mahama.

He questioned why “the Ghana Bar Association is dead silent on such a serious issue as Bugri Naabu pointing fingers at Otiko Djaba and Rockson Bukari for being complicit in the murder of Chairman Adams.”

The late Adams Mahama
The late Adams Mahama

“So the NPP can decide to pull a veil over the unfortunate, vulgar and dangerous utterances of Otiko Djaba and Bugri Naabu, but it does not stop Ghanaians from discussing the issues and will not stop the NDC from firing the right arrows and continuing to raise these issues till we get a proper conclusion of these matters.”

“Let us look up, ask the solid questions and demand answers. We will not accept this kind of thing from the NPP,” the NDC executive stated.

NPP stands by decision

The NPP has however stood by its directives, with the National Youth Organizer of the party, Sammy Awuku saying that the party took the best decision in sanctioning the two officers.

“It is not just an apology. They have been bonded, and it is no joke if you are bonded by the National Council in an indefinite manner because, at any point in time, when the national council feels you have gone against this bond, you might attract serious sanctions from the National Council.”

The Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu, has admitted guilt in making baseless allegation that the Upper Easter Regional Minister, Rockson Bukari and Gender Minister, Otiko Afisa Djaba were involved in the murder of the late NPP Upper East Regional Chairman, Adams Mahama.

According to him, he made the allegations out of “extreme anger and provocation”.

[contextly_sidebar id=”QV3lCZwoMM9nurKQsDGC8TP9tLDfbUF1″]Bugri Naabu in an apology letter to the party and Ghanaians, said he apologized for the “unfortunate exchange of words between my good self and Otiko Djaba. I repeat unreservedly that, such conduct would never be repeated. It is my sincere prayer that, I would never repeat such a conduct again.”

“I do not have any proof or evidence to support those allegations… I very much regret the embarrassment and inconvenience caused to the leadership of the party and the country as a whole,” he said in the letter.

There has recently been a war of words between Bugri Naabu andOtiko Afisa Djaba.

After claims by Madam Otiko to the effect that Bugri Naabu was receiving gifts from persons with the promise of securing appointments in public office for them, the latter, alleged that Madam Otiko and Rockson Bukari were “deeply involved” in the murder of the former NPP Upper East Regional Chairman, Adams Mahama.

The NPP, which has described as disappointing the fracas between the two, convened an emergency National Council meeting that caused the two to apologize to each other and members of the party.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bugri Naabu has in a separate letter to the Regional minister, Rockson Bukari, said the allegations he made against him were “a slip of tongue” as he had no ill-intent towards him.

Mr. Bukari was quick to deny any involvement in the death of the late Chairman, when Mr. Naabu made them earlier this week, and gave Bugri Naabu 48-hours to retract the allegations or face a lawsuit.

The National Council of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has directed all party officials serving in government to resign as soon as possible.

The Council which, is the second highest decision making body of the party, said combining party work and government work is not the best.

[contextly_sidebar id=”UUTFipw46l6nSkE6cUbwHTNXFnf7kvRn”]The decision was taken at the council’s meeting on Wednesday night.

The meeting was triggered by the recent public outburst between Gender Minister, Otiko Afisa Djaba, and Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP, Daniel Bugri Naabu which many have described as a huge indictment on the government.

The meeting which had the President, Nana Akufo-Addo in attendance, saw Otiko Djaba who doubles as National Women’s Organizer, apologizing to the President and the National Council, as well as Bugri Naabu, whom she had accused of receiving cows and goats from people with the promise of securing government jobs for them.

Bugri Naabu also apologized to the President and the Council and promised to seize public commentary on the matter.

With this new directive, Madam Djaba, who is the National Women’s organizer of the party will resign.

John Peter Amewu, who is Lands and National Resources Minister, will also resign his post as Volta Regional Chairman of the NPP, while Archibald Letsa, the Volta Regional Minister and First Vice Chairman of the NPP in the region, will resign from the first vice position.

The Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Kyeremeh Ameyaw will resign as the Regional Chairman of the party.

Kwamena Duncan, the Central Regional Minister will resign as Regional Secretary of the NPP.

Mr. Ishmael Ashietey, who is also the Greater Accra Regional Minister, and Adjei-Sowah, who is the Metropolitan Chief Executive of Accra will also resign from their respective party positions.

An aide to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Northern Regional Chairman, Bugri Naabu, has questioned the integrity of the journalist who’s interview with his boss conveyed allegations suggesting the Upper East Regional Minister, Rockson Bukari, was involved in the murder the late Upper East Regional Chairman of the NPP, Adams Mahama.

Simak Shirac, the special assistant to Bugri Naabu, alleged that the journalist in question carried out a secret recording of the Northern Region NPP Chairman leading to the compromising allegations making rounds in public.

[contextly_sidebar id=”tVEVeZ7nRWk3B89D7c8z3xGGsRLCPQ0A”]Bugri Naabu was threatened with a lawsuit for the claims, but has since apologized to the Upper East Regional Minister.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, he said, “I am telling you on authority that what is circulating in the media was never part of the interview Bugri Naabu granted and Bugri Naabu said so during the interview. I was there when the interview was granted.”

According to Mr. Shirac, concerns were raised after the official interview as to whether the journalist was still recording them off record. He said the journalist gave assurances that “even if my recorder captures what you guys are discussing, I will delete or edit it.”

“But to our surprise, what he said he was going to delete or edit was in the public domain,” Mr. Shirac added.

Journalist fires back – Shirac was not even present

Speaking on Eyewitness News later on however, the journalist who interviewed Bugri Naabu, Isaac Nognya, took offence to the claims and questioned why Mr. Shirac was even speaking to the matters when he [Shirac] was not in the vicinity of the interview.

“I am a very professional journalist and I have discharged my duties professionally over the years and the said gentleman [Simak Shirac] was not in the said meeting,” Isaac Nognya asserted.

The interview stemmed for the Northern Region NPP a fracas between the Minister for Gender, Women and Children Affairs, Otiko Djaba and Bugri Naabu, which saw damning allegations thrown either way, including the claims that Otiko and Rockson Bukari were “deeply involved” in the murder of the former NPP Upper East Regional Chairman.

Isaac Nognya indicated that, he may have some more indicting sound bites as he said to the Eyewitness News host, Umaru Sanda.

“If he[Simak Shirac] dares me, I will release the raw tape to you and you will listen to the one-one interview.”

“I said, look, the person who granted me the interview has no problem with the soundbite so you a second party should not say I shouldn’t have sent that voice recording.”
