One of the standouts of the 2017 National Science & Maths Quiz and eventual champion, Prempeh College’s Wonder Sarfo-Ansah’s father was a backup on the victorious Prempeh College team sent to compete in this very quiz in 1996.

Wonder’s father is currently a chemical engineer.

Wonder who watched videos from the 1996 contest said on the Citi Breakfast Show that he “had exposure to the quiz very early, in JHS [Junior High School].”

“My father, he always wanted to see his son on TV and wanted his son to also win a trophy for the school. When I was in form one, before I had even gotten admission to Prempeh College, he took me around the school because he was an old boy and he sent me to the administration and showed me a picture of himself holding the trophy.”

Wonder has now secured bragging rights at home, as he revealed that his father “was always saying he was better than me till I won and now, he has admitted that I am more intelligent than him.”

The National Science and Maths Quiz for the last 23 years has whipped up interest in science, rekindled old school rivalry and in this social media age given Ghanaians something very productive to cheer about; never mind the trolls.

The thrill has not been absent in the 2017 edition, which has been graced with its fair share of upsets. Opoku Ware School, Wesley Girls, Holy Child, Pope John, Aburi Girls are among other top-ranked schools that have been “ shown their real size” in the competition by less fancied contestants.

As the competition enters its final phase this week, the stakes are high and the race towards the grand finale on Thursday is even keener.

In 2016, the final was a top level clash between Cape Coast rival schools, Adisadel College and Mfanstsipim school, and one of Ashanti’s finest schools, Opoku Ware. Adisadel College fought off the strong competition and eventually clinched their first ever National Science and Maths Quiz trophy.

A closer look at the 2017 semi-final pairings shows that the quiz enthusiasts could be served with a mouth-watering grand finale line-up of schools, but as to where the chips will fall, the picture would be clearer by close of day today [Monday].

The first contest is an all Cape Coast affair featuring Adisadel College, Ghana National College and University Practice High School. University Practice was in the final in 2015, and this year, their team has been impressive.

The second contest is a big name clash between three-time winners, Prempeh College, two time winners, Mfantsipim School and the pride of the Volta Region at this level, Mawuli School.

Prempeh has the highest score in a single contest in the competition so far, but they come face to face with their nemesis in last year’s quarterfinal, Mfantsipim School.

The last semi-final contest will see an all-boys affair with representation from Kumasi and Accra. PRESEC Legon would have to beat Kumasi High School and St Thomas Aquinas to have a fair shot at an opportunity to lift the trophy for the sixth time.

St. Thomas Aquinas snatched victory from the jaws of defeat leaving it late in their National Science & Maths Quiz quarter-final contest.

St. Thomas Aquinas solved the final riddle on the first clue for 5 points as they overcame Nifa SHS, who saw their 3 point lead disappear at the death.

St. Thomas Aquinas SHS ended the contest with 42 points, Nifa SHS with 40 points and St. Hubert Seminary SHS with 35.

The contest was on a knife’s edge going into the final rounds with all schools separated by just 3 points.

All three schools failed to answer the first riddle but Nifa SHS pounced on the second riddle on the second clue for 4 points taking them to 40, with St. Thomas Aquinas SHS trailing with 33 at the time.

But St. Thomas Aquinas picked the final two riddles for a combined 9 points to complete their late comeback.

A former Member of Parliament, George Loh, has revealed that about $300,000 was proposed and contributed by the United States for the upkeep of the two former Guantanamo Bay detainees being hosted in Ghana for two years.

Speaking on The Big Issue, he disclosed that, “the amount is available to ensure that they are catered for” but stressed that “it is not an amount that has been given to them to pocket.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”cnmach3QtnJiWK3i2cqeBGH1HTmTcAnl”]”There was an amount that was agreed for the upkeep or an amount that was proposed from the US for the upkeep of the two, and that is not something that we are disbursing as a country. We are making sure that they get everything they want.”

Without disclosing much, Mr. Loh said of the amount: “I think it is about $300,000…the agreement is just for two years.”

The former Guantanamo Bay detainees were transferred to Ghana in January 2016, when they were deemed to be of minimal risk to national security to the US.

The two detainees, Mahmud Umar Muhammad Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammad Salih Al-Dhuby were under detention in US custody for 14 years after being linked with terrorist group Al-Qaeda.

The two are back in the spotlight after a Supreme Court judgment indicating that the Mahama Administration needed the approval of Parliament before entering into any international agreement, like the case of the two.

A point of concern surrounding the transfer of the two was the perceived secrecy of the whole process, with the two under tight surveillance during their stay in Ghana.

Security considerations to be made

Speaking to these concerns, Mr. Loh, who during his time Parliament, was privy to sensitive information on the matter, noted that due diligence, security-wise, was done on the matter, and key stakeholders were briefed, ahead of the transfer of the two Yemen nationals.

“I know IMANI was briefed before they came in. I know Nana Akufo-Addo was briefed before they came in. I know all the key stakeholders in this country were given a proper briefing.”

The IMANI Africa president, Franklin Cudjoe, also on the show, confirmed he was briefed before the two were brought into the country, as he too indicated that a lot of the information surrounding the deal was sensitive.

“In the heat of the public uproar, I was briefed. I got a call all the way from the States… I got two calls, one possibly just before they were brought, and another one when the matter became public as well,” Mr. Cudjoe said.

Mr. Loh continued to explained that, “some of the things are so security sensitive that you cannot come and run your mouth in the public domain. A lot of the things are done at a security level. American security will not put anything in writing and send formally for somebody to intercept and put out there.”

“The modalities were worked out one after the other. We had our people travel out there. We even had General Smith, who was our ambassador at the time, go and look at the people and inspect them and debrief them before they came here.”

But the fourth round, with its True/False questions, where a correct answer is worth 2 points whereas a wrong answer attracts a penalty point, saw the Wesley Girls’ High School contestants come unstuck, as Kumasi High School took control of the tie.

By the end of the fourth round, Kumasi High School stood at 36 points with T.I. AMASS, Fomena at 35 points as Wesley Girls’ High School dropped to 26 points as a result of the multiple penalties incurred.
