President John Dramani Mahama has charged global leaders to commit themselves to promote peace across the globe.
Addressing the 70th session of the UN General Assembly, the President emphasized the need for the United Nations to consider proposals for reforms in its objectives of attaining global peace in order to meet the changing needs of the present world.
[contextly_sidebar id=”5u0Cf6amXehKCqqlDj4iCVwpM7tH1kvp”]Ghana’s President also expressed concerns over recent developments including Bokoharam and ISIS activities that pose security threats to the world.
He further decried the plight of refugees who have been moved to other countries, saying the problem can be tackled if global leaders become more responsible.
“Thousands more the majority from African nations have died in the Mediterranean Sea while attempting to flee poverty, hunger, disease or political strife or persecution
“Then there are those who did not die while seeking refuge, those whose perilous journeys landed them safely at the borders of other nations, some welcoming their arrivals and others subjecting them to further alienation and degradation,… the numbers are staggering,” he said.
While urging global leaders to examine the most basic institutions which he cited as the basic principle of promoting international peace and respect for human rights, he further called on the global leaders not to uphold traditions that do not allow women and children to develop their potentials and bridge the inequality gap.
