The Sakumono Hospital in Accra has been sued by a dissatisfied client for negligence.
Making a claim of GH¢100,000 for damages, and GH¢10,000 for medical expenses, the plaintiff, Mrs Rebecca Kyei Antwi, averred that on May 17, 2015 she was rushed to the hospital for treatment after she had sustained a deep cut on her right arm from a broken glass table in her living room.
Instead of being treated by the required health professionals, her wound was stitched by a man who she later found out to be a security officer of the hospital.
Mrs Antwi developed complications for which she was rushed to the 37 Military Hospital where she had to expend GH¢5,000.
Traumatised
She said she had suffered emotional and psychological trauma and her right arm had been disfigured.
In her statement of claim, Mrs Antwi said when she arrived at the hospital, she was examined by Dr Paul O. Botsio, who was the doctor on duty. He later recommended that her injured hand should be stitched.
The nurse on duty, Patience Odampten, then led her to the injection room where the security man turned ‘surgical nurse’ stitched the wound.
It was when she started having complications and returned to the hospital that she got to know that the person, who had stitched her wound, was not a surgical nurse but a security man.
Mrs Antwi averred that she could have lost her right wrist as a result of the complications, if she had not been rushed to the 37 Military Hospital.
She claimed that she had intermittent pain in the upper right wrist, which she did not use to have before the stitching, and added that a medical report, issued by the 37 Military Hospital, disclosed that she had had a very serious infection of the affected right wrist.
According to the statement, Mrs Antwi has still not returned to work and is unable to use the affected hand.
The Human Rights Division of the Accra High Court is yet to set a date for the case to commence.
