A suspected armed robber who attempted to rape his victim has been arrested by the police. His mobile phone which he dropped at the crime scene gave him away.

Augustine Owusu allegedly pulled his victim into a nearby bush in an attempt to rape her, but he ran away when he heard footsteps of people approaching. In the attempt to flee, he dropped his Nokia cellular phone, which had his picture as a screen saver.

Facts
Giving the facts of the incident, the Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr Osei Ampofoh Duku, said at about 8:30 p.m. on July 19, 2015, the victim, who is a trader, was on her way home when she was attacked by the suspect with a locally manufactured pistol.

He said the suspect took her Samsung mobile phone and her purse before dragging her into a nearby bush with the intention to rape her.

He added that the suspect heard some passers-by approaching and sensing danger, he took to his heels.

With the assistance of the passers-by, the woman took the phone and reported the matter to the Suntreso Police.

Arrest

According to Mr Duku, the following morning, the police had information that an unidentified man had been shot and rushed to the Emergency and Accident Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for treatment.

He said when the police got there, they realised that the victim was the same suspect who dropped his phone at the crime scene the previous day.

Owusu is said to have told the police that after escaping from the crime scene, he met two members of his gang who snatched the phone he took from the victim and shot him in the hand with his locally manufactured pistol.

He gave the name of one the members of the gang as ‘Junior’.
