A 13-year-old boy of the Bethel Preparatory School at Somanya in the Eastern Region has allegedly committed suicide by hanging.

He was found hanging on a staircase in the school with the belt of his school bag hanging around his neck on Sunday evening.

An eyewitness, Austin Ofori Addo told Citi News, the pupil who was the school’s bell boy was no where to be found when it was time for dining and the bell had to be rung.

[contextly_sidebar id=”D6R62ROHuFSRdLiQ9ouymSOMrObnXWkH”]According to him, his friends found him hanging on one of the school’s staircase moments after they launched a search for him.

“Yesterday [Sunday] around 6:30pm, it was time for dining so they were looking for the bell boy to come and ring the bell for the students to get inside. The bell boy was nowhere to be found but somebody later alerted the teachers that they saw him going to the top so they should go and search there.”

“When they got there, they found out that this boy had hanged himself. He used the handle of his school bag which is more or less like a belt. He tied it to the staircase and hanged himself,” he narrated.

Austin Ofori Addo disclosed that after investigations, it emerged that early on in the day, the was seen hanging a rope around the neck of a live bird he had caught.

He is said to have maltreated the bird until it died and a few hours later, he was found hanging on the staircase

The deceased’s parents were immediately contacted and his body has since been sent to the Atua Government Hospital morgue.
