The Ga Traditional Council has praised the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) for demolishing structures at Old Fadama in Accra.
Residents of Old Fadama had their properties destroyed over the weekend, as part of measures to halt the perennial flooding in the capital city.

But addressing a press conference on Thursday in Accra, Noyaatse of Korle-Gonno Nii Obedro said the Council believes the time for the demolition came at a right time.
“Our inspection at Circle clearly suggested that a number of factors contributed immensely to the flooding in parts of Accra. They included erecting unauthorized settlements and structures in the waterways of the rivers that empty into the Korle Lagoon.”
According to Nii Obedro, Old Fadama was one of the areas they identified as the cause of flooding in the region hence their endorsement of AMA’s action adding that “we are most grateful to the AMA.”
“What is more, the present location of these structures used to be the spiritual ground of the Korle deity. Unfortunately, over time the area has been defiled.”
He further condemned the protests by the Old Fadama residents over the demolition saying it was an “unruly behavior” and “we hope the culprits who have been identified and arrested will be dealt with by law.”
On his part, the acting President of the Ga Traditional Council, Nii Ayi Bonte said they will no longer give out lands for relocation since past projects have not benefited them in any way.
“In 1961, Nkrumah relocated them to New Fadama, they were also relocated to Darkumah. Why should they always be relocated to places of their choice? This time we will not agree. As at now, we don’t even have any land remaining,” he fumed.
