Energy Research firm, KITE is warning that Ghana is likely to be hit with another phase of severe power crises next year if rainfall for this year remain the same or lower than the previous year.
Hydro Power accounts for about 52 percent of Ghana’s energy mix with three major dams- Akosombo, Bui and Kpong hydro dams.
Water levels at Akosombo have fallen to 251.3 feet from 261.82 feet recorded same time last year.
There are fears the level may drop further to the required minimum level of 240 feet.
KITE reckons that inflows into the dams last year were significantly low and could pose a threat for power supply next year should the dams not receive substantial amount of water this year.
Energy Analyst and executive director of KITE, Ishmeal Agyekum speaking to Citi Business News said “when you monitor the inflows into the Volta Lake, the inflows last year was not good enough. If we don’t have good rains, it means that by the time the dry season is here with us, we will have very little water in the Volta Lake and that will be a massive problem for us.”
