Pupils in the Tenzuk primary and Junior high school in the Talensi district in the Upper East region walk about 4 kilometers to use information and communications technology (ICT) centre established by the World Vision, a non-governmental organization instead of the school’s own centre.
The teachers and pupils of the school are yet to start using the facility built and commissioned for them in December 2014.
The centre, which was built by Carolyn Wright, an American philanthropist, has been stocked with 41 mini laptop computers with installed solar panels aimed at improving the teaching and learning of ICT in the school.
This is because the keys to the facility according to the teachers were handed over to the community leaders instead of the authorities of the school.
Final year students of Tenzuk JHS said the current situation is likely to adversely affect their Basic Education Certificate Examination results.
The pupil at the primary school also lamented that after walking the distance to world vision ICT centre, they become very tired and cannot study for the rest of the day.
Speaking to Citi News some of the teachers’ of the school, said after the ICT centre was commissioned the keys to the facility was handed over to the community instead of the school making it difficult for them to use facility.
The teachers added that the situation is affecting the teaching of ICT in the schools “instead of teaching ICT practically we only teach theory.”
Meanwhile, the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) chairman of the school, Mr. Solomon Golobdan has said the keys to the ICT centre was given to him for security purposes adding that the philanthropist had not given the go-ahead to start using the facility.
But Citi News checks uncovered that the facility is being used as a place to charge mobile phones for some members of the community.
In an interview with Citi News, the chief of Tenzuk, Zotentaar-Suhbazaa John Bawa Zuure said the matter had not come to his notice but said he will investigate the matter to ensure that the keys to the centre is handed over to the appropriate authorities.
