This according to the Minister says will promote accountability, as well as to introduce competition and cost consciousness into sector, adding it bring about effective solid waste management; to ensure a clean environment.

Speaking at a Victory and Dinner Dance event organized by the Western Australian chapter of the NPP in Perth – Australia, Lands and Natural Resources Minister, John Peter Amewu said the initiative will address some concerns raised by citizens.

He stated that, government hoping to bring down the cost of operations for the waste management companies which he said will reduce the expenses Ghanaians make on disposing refuse.

“It is a fact that Zoomlion has become the monopoly of the industry in Ghana, for a long time. Do not forget that he was the first person to go where no one wanted to go. He has expanded beyond all reasonable reach by any imagination. What government is doing now is to regionalize waste management. Instead of Zoomlion alone serving in the whole country, in some regions you will waste management company also operating. Zoomlion has the capacity in terms of the equipment so they will be operating alongside these companies in the various regions and districts,” he added.

The Minister also said government is also trying to decentralize those support services Zoomlion provides in order to cut cost.

“Most districts have complained that they will effectively manage waste at a competitive price, So government is opening up those opportunities, and the issue of Monopoly will be a thing of the past. The government of Akufo Addo believe in healthy competition and value for money”.

Mr Raymond Ategbi Okrofi, the Country Manager of Safi Sana Ghana Ltd, has called on government to come up with policies that would facilitate waste segregation in the country.

He said the country generated a lot of waste but both the organic and inorganic were being mixed and this did not encourage the processing of waste.

At the 62nd National Level Learning Alliance Platform (NALLAP) meeting to commemorate World Water Day, Mr Okrofi said if government could educate people to separate their waste, it would serve as an incentive to individuals and companies in the sector.

The event, hosted by the Ghana Netherlands Wash, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Programme, was on the theme: “Wastewater Treatment and Re-use in Ghana: Prospects for Sustained Development”.

It was aimed at drawing the attention of policy makers and authorities in the agriculture, aquaculture, health, environment and urban planning sectors on the environmental risks of waste management and how to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Mr Okrofi said Ghana was high on the list of countries that were not doing well in terms of waste management because there were no systems in place to process the waste generated.

“Every waste is a resource so why do we throw rubbish away and litter the environment. It is, therefore, important that initiatives such as these are supported with the necessary priorities it deserves because if we treat our waste that is when we can get the valuable potentials that are inherent,” he said.

Mr Richard Sedafor, a Waste Management Consultant, said wastewater treatments were highly beneficial to the country to help save cost and generate bio plastics since this had been a menace to the country.

He again appealed to government to have a structure that adjusts tariffs for waste management and also institute policies for industries to have bio plastics.

Mr Ben Ampomah, the Executive Secretary of Water Resources Commission, called for scaling up of the interventions and building of capacity of stakeholders to ensure the success of the project.

Mr Fred Smiet, the First Secretary of Water and Climate, Ghana Netherlands WASH Programme, expressed gratitude to actors for sharing their experiences to help address wastewater treatment challenges.

Mr Frederick Sunesson, the Founder of the Bola Bondeh at Lavender Hill, said their aim was to stop waste from being dumped into oceans, gutters and where vegetables were cultivated.

Residents of Tema have been advised against patronizing the services of ‘borla taxis’ as a measure to curb the increasing rate of indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the Metropolis.

‘Borla taxis’ are tricycles used to collect garbage from households at a fee.

The services of these ‘borla taxis’ are highly patronized in Tema since most of the private waste management companies are not regular.

Engineer Solomon Noi, Head, Waste Management Department of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), who gave the advice, said most of these ‘borla taxi’ operators end up dumping the refuse on the streets, in drainages and behind houses.

Mr. Noi explained that cardboards are put on the sides of the bucket of the tricycles to take more load which invariably makes it too heavy to be carried to landfills so they dump anywhere.

He gave the advice on Thursday during the launch of the “2017 Face of Tema”, a beauty pageant aimed at increasing awareness about sanitation workers problems in the Tema Metropolis.

This year’s pageant being organized by the TMA in conjunction with Daylight Events, is on the theme, “Environmental Management and Sanitation”.

He said activities of these operators would lead to an outbreak of an epidemic in the Metropolis including cholera, diarrhoea, and typhoid if the practice is not stopped.

Eng. Noi also called for attitudinal change among residents as according to him, most of the sanitation problems facing Tema emanated from unsanitary practices.

He stated for instance that some residents had expanded their homes to the extent that sewer manholes where located in their rooms, while traders also dump refuse into sewer lines as most of the metal covers of the manholes had been stolen exposing them to debris when it rained.

He gave the assurance that the TMA, through a Public Private Partnership programme would upgrade the Community Three waste treatment plant to process the Metropolis’ liquid waste to produce water for irrigation, compost for farming and biogas.

The Engineer added that the Kpone landfill site would modernized to process waste into energy, noting however that investors would chicken out if they found out that they could not recoup their investment due to the attitudes of residents.

Ogyedom Ama Tetewaa I, Tema Fantehene, launching the pageant urged religious bodies especially churches to educate their congregants to observe good sanitation practices.

Miss Felicity Naa Amerley Sampa, the maiden winner of Face of Tema, called on institutions, Assembly Members and individuals in the Metropolis to financially support the winner to embark on intensive advocacy on sanitation in the area adding that due to lack of support she had challenges implementing her project.
