The Rotary Club of Ring Road has made a Ghc12,000 worth of donation comprising assorted items, which included gallons of cooking oil, bags of rice, toys and beverages to the children and guardians of the Kressner Orphanage at Kodjo-Ashong in the Ga West Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

The donation was part of the Club’s activities to fete the children at the orphanage this month.

The Service Project Director, James Owuse, said the Club deemed it important to give back to the community especially towards the development of young children hence the gesture.

The President of the Ring Road Central Rotary Club, Tony Asare, said that, society must be responsible for the vulnerable, especially children in orphanages so that they can be given equal opportunity to have the best life can offer.

He said he was of the firm belief that the items and cash donated to the Orphanage will go a long way to support the Children and contribute to making them responsible citizens.

Sister Kizita, the guardian who received the items on behalf of the orphanage, expressed gratitude to the Rotary Club and promised to put the items to good use.

She said the Orphanage would be diligent in making use of the items to help keep the bond it shares with the Rotary Club Accra, Ring Road Central.

The Kressner Orphanage was funded by the Rotary Club of Otterndorf-Land in Germany, and in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Accra with about $700,000.

[contextly_sidebar id=”jqkbCyzquNz4UMqHNJYUFQxtzba5EhTL”]Speaking at the official launch of the campaign, the District Governor of Rotary International, Sam Worentetu described as worrying the increasing phenomenon of lack of respect for time in the country.

According to him, this situation was getting noticed by many people in and outside the country and that did not auger well for Ghana’s image.

“Whilst all these and several other acts occur in Ghanaian society every day, we often are given to lamentations with very little else. This is because it is the most powerful in society who are in the offending group and not too many people or organisations will want to rub such people in the wrong way,” he said.

The South Korean Ambassador to Ghana, H.E Lyeo Woon-Ki who was the special guest of honour at the event urged Ghanaians to work hard to ensure punctuality and be “masters of their own time”, as the effective use of time has a direct influence on the nation’s development.

According to him, his country was able to develop through the “effective use of resources including time, under the right leadership”.

“There was once a time when we had a phrase like “Korean time” if that is now gone, then the term “Ghana time” can also be a thing of the past” he emphasised.

A former Rotary International Director, Sam Okudzeto who officially launched the campaign’s new logo and slogan “Be On Time, All The Time” urged the thousands of Rotarians across the country to be the pacesetters of the project.

He said, it must be a conscious effort by the people to stay on time.

He also said they will construct time towers at some vantage points in the country to promote help instil the discipline of punctuality.

VOSH-GHANA, in conjunction with Rotary Club of Accra West and Rotary Club of Apam, has organised a free eye screening exercise for the people of Gomoa  Eshiem in the Central Region.

The exercise started at 0800 hours with an education on eye health and some symptoms of common eye problems that require medical attention.

A statement signed by Madam Yvonne Asiedu, the President of Rotary Club of Accra West, and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Thursday said a total of 267 people comprising 44 children and 223 adults were screened.

It said out of the number, 57 of the community members were given eye glasses with 185 receiving medical attention.

“One hundred and forty-eight of them we referred to the nearest health facility for further management and the commonest reason for referral was cataract removal, about three quarters of the adult had a form of cataract,” it said.

According to the statement, the commonest eye conditions seen in the children were allergic conjunctivitis and among the elderly was cataract.

It said: “Dry eyes and refractive error was the second highest in the adults and Children.”

It noted that the major challenge the three groups encountered was that most of the people referred were hesitant to go to the referral centre due to financial challenges.

“Majority of the adults are farmers and it is not uncommon to have some of them presenting with blindness as a result of corneal opacity.

“This condition is usually as result of corneal ulcer contracted while working on the farm that are not properly treated, which ends up in complications that cause blindness,” the statement said.

It noted that six doctors and 24 Optometry students from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology gave medical attention to the adults and children who were screened.

The statement quoted Madam Aseidu as saying: “The opportunity exist for Rotary or Rotarians to sustain this humanitarian gesture by advocating an eye–care professional or sponsor to train a community nurse at the local health centre who can provide emergency first aid and refer appropriately so as to help prevent avoidable blindness.

“The programme was successful and a lot of lives were touched positively to fulfill the humanitarian goals of Rotary Club and VOSH International,” it said.

Gomoa  Eshiem is a small community settlement with a population of about two thousand. The town is about 28 miles from the District Capital.

VOSH Ghana is an international non-governmental organisation that is involved in eye care.
