The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Klottey Korley constituency has denied allegations of attempts to expunge persons who supported independent candidate Nii Noi Nortey in the 2016 elections, from polling registers.

According to the party, the allegations being peddled are false, as the register contains the names of all well-standing members.

[contextly_sidebar id=”xvOivLFpi5AAW8iHlWAlJaTzVGyQfnSn”]Some members of the party in the constituency on Thursday besieged the party’s headquarters to protest against alleged attempts to expunge persons who supported independent candidate Nii Noi Nortey in the 2016 elections, from polling registers.

The Vice-Chairman of the NPP in the Klottey Korley constituency Alhaji Aliu Kabe told Citi News that the friction arising from Nii Noi Nortey’s initial defection from the party has not even resulted in any sanctions.

“Nobody has been sanctioned in this constituency official or on record… the only thing I know, that I can speak to is that he who alleges must prove. If there is any evidence against any polling or constituency executive, bring it to the regional leadership and they will call them to order,” he stated.

Background

In May 2017, Nii Noi Nortey, a former NPP Constituency Chairman for Klottey Korley, apologized to the NPP for contesting as an independent candidate.

He said circumstances beyond his control compelled him to reject the advice of the then flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, in the run-up to the 2016 elections.

Nii Noi Nortey

Nii Noi contested the elections in an independent capacity after a disputed primary which saw him lose against Philip Addison.

He accused Lawyer Addison and some party executives for rigging the election after a second primary was called.

Nii Noi Nortey had won the first primary overwhelmingly amidst a boycott from the other candidates over the election date.

Scores of New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters in the Klottey Korley constituency besieged the party’s headquarters in protest of what they say are attempts to expunge persons who supported independent candidate Nii Noi Nortey in the 2016 elections, from polling registers.

Some party members are said to have resisted attempts to keep Nii Noi Nortey’s supporters on the NPP register.

[contextly_sidebar id=”NnkgI8JZcGfQkvXbyUWyPr2MXd5EE0bR”]A party member at the scene who spoke to Citi News said: “some people want to support Nii Noi so the other party is saying we should remove those people from the register so we had a call from our coordinator that we should meet here today so we came to meet the General Secretary.”

However, after meeting the acting General Secretary, the NPP member, said the agitating members were told “nobody can be removed from the register. Everybody has the chance to be in the register.”

Beyond this, the party member also said it would not be possible to prove who were actual supporters of Nii Noi Nortey.

“Actually, we don’t know them so you can’t point out someone who went to support one person or the other. When people were going to vote, no one followed them. So you can’t look at faces and say this person went and supported Ni Noi so I am removing that person’s name.”

A former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Constituency Chairman for Klottey Korley in the Greater Accra Region, Nii Noi Nortey, is pleading with President Nana Akufo-Addo and party executives to forgive him for snubbing the NPP and contesting the 2016 elections as an independent parliamentary candidate.

He said circumstances beyond his control compelled him to reject the advice of the then flagbearer Akufo Addo, former President John Kufuor and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the run-up to the 2016 elections.

Nii Noi Nortey contested in the elections after an acrimonious primary which saw him lose against lawyer Philip Addison.

He accused Lawyer Addison and some party executives for rigging the election after a second primary was called.  Nii Noi Nortey had won the first primary overwhelmingly amidst a boycott from the other candidates over the election date.

But now, upon reflection, Nii Noi Nortey admitted to Citi News that, he made a big political mistake, and he called on all persons who intervened in the Klottey Korle impasse “to forgive my actions and they shouldn’t take it as an act of disobedience.”

I still love the party

Nii Noi Nortey also stressed his love the party, and indicated his willingness to still serve the NPP.

“I joined the party because I loved the party and all that. I never joined having in mind that one day, I may go independent. It is regrettable and unfortunate. I love the party anytime, any day, I will still do my best and do whatever I have to do for the party,” he said.

Nii Noi Nortey recalled that “the ex-President, J.A. Kufuor invited me to his house. The current president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on several occasions had discussions on that with me, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice, we had discussions too.”

“There was a lot of politics going on that I wouldn’t want to delve into.”

The current National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, polled 33,609 votes, the NPP’s Lawyer Addison had 29, 122, whereas the Independent Candidate, Nii Noi Nortey, polled a meager 3, 911 votes.

The opposition  New Patriotic Party (NPP), in the Korle Klottey Constituency of the Greater Accra Region, has warned the independent parliamentary candidate in the Korle Klottey Constituency, Nii Noi Nortey, to desist from using the party’s colours and paraphernalia for his campaign, ahead of the December 7 polls.

Nii Noi Nortey broke away from the NPP after he lost the party’s primary in an acrimonious contest to lawyer Philip Addison.

Speaking to Citi News, the Korle Klottey NPP Organizer, Daniel Odei Appiah, said Nii Noi’s action is confusing electorates in the area.

[contextly_sidebar id=”LIiVop4lVWF13RXVhXq4t7lFeEqxyPUx”]“It’s come to our notice a number of times that he and his followers while going about their activities particularly in the house-to-house and one-on-one campaign are using our colours. They keep telling people that he is a member of the party; and in some cases it has come to us that, some homes he has entered, he presents himself as NPP member and standing in the name of NPP.”

“We have also seen a number of times, he and his followers while doing a health walk and other activities, use NPP colours. There are people who are finding it difficult to comprehend this situation,” he added.

Nii Noi Nortey goes independent

Nii Noi had earlier been elected in a previous NPP primary held in 2015.

In that primary, Philip Addison, who was lead counsel for the NPP’s 2012 election petition, polled a meager 22 votes, while Nii Nortey polled 393 votes.

Nii Adjei Tawiah, a third contestant, had 19 votes. But the two were unhappy with the outcome because they had boycotted the election after their demand for a change in the election date was rejected.

They appealed to the party to address their concerns internally, but that failed, forcing them to go to court.

Eventually, the ruling by the court although a bit unclear, meant that a re-run was inevitable. Mr. Philip Addison won the re-run; compelling an embittered Nii Noi Nortey to go independent.

An independent candidate in the Korle Klottey parliamentary contest, Nii Noi Nortey has said he is confident of victory ahead of the December polls.

According to him, he has worked tirelessly and harder than his opponents contesting the parliamentary seat in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Nii Noi Nortey said his message of making the constituency better and improving the lives of the electorates has been accepted by majority of the people.

He told Citi News claims that his main contenders, Philip Addison of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Zanetor Rawlings of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had better chances of winning the elections were false.

He said, “when you talk of strongholds, I won’t say a particular area is my stronghold because there is a silent majority who are just supporting us. We’ve managed to meet close to 70 per cent of the constituents and I can tell you it is very positive. We are getting ready to hit the streets. Campaigning has been very good.I am very confident of beating them. My stronghold is everywhere in all the nine electoral areas.”

‘Race for Korle Klottey’

The Korle Klottey seat is one of the few constituencies in the Greater Accra Region that will be keenly monitored due to the unique dynamics and play of politics in the area.

The NPP’s Philip Addison became popular after leading his party’s legal team to challenge its loss at the the 2012 presidential elections at the Supreme Court.

The NDC’s Zanetor Rawlings is the daughter of Ghana’s former President and founder of the party, Jerry John Rawlings.

The Progressive Peoples Party (PPP)’s Parliamentary candidate for the area, Eva Lokko, was unable to submit her nomination forms as she died last week earlier in the USA while receiving medical care.

Rockson Kofi Bright of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), and CPP’s Godwin Opare Addo are said to be making inroads in gaining support from the local people ahead of the elections.

Nii Noi Nortey, who fell out of the NPP after losing the primary in a controversial election, is also contesting as an independent candidate.

Parliamentary nominee for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Klottey Korle constituency, Philip Addison, has said he would have restrained himself from mainstream politics if he had known some of the things he knew now, prior to getting into the terrain.

Speaking to  Citi News’ Umaru Sanda Amadu on Citi TV’s Politicos, Philip Addison said he is surprised by some of the things he had come to know about politics.

“It’s been turbulent, I didn’t anticipate some of the things that I have come to know but once I take a decision I don’t step back. I wouldn’t say I’m terrified over some of the things; maybe surprised. Maybe I should say that if I knew some of the things that I know now, I may have hesitated in jumping in,” he added.

Mr. Addison, who was the lead lawyer for NPP flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo during the 2012 Election Petition case, later expressed interest in representing the party in Parliament in the Klottey Korle constituency.

Although the road hasn’t been rosy for him, he managed to get elected as the parliamentary nominee for the area amidst a legal tussle and a disputed primary.

His main contender in the primary, Nii Noi Nortey, once an NPP constituency chairman in the area, is contesting as an independent candidate because he was aggrieved by the process that got Mr. Addison elected over him.

Mr. Addison told Umaru Sanda that going to Parliament would help him have a change in atmosphere from the court room.

“I want to have a change of atmosphere. Well; I thought http://bestacnedrug.com that it’s about time some of us get involved in the political institution in this country and hence my decision to go to Parliament. So far it has been exciting,” he said.

August 2 primary re-run

Addison triumphed over Nii Noi in the party’s second primary. The lawyer polled 396 votes while Nii Noi had 367 votes.

Pro-December 7 polls analysis

The Korle Klottey constituency is considered as one of the seats in the country which would be keenly contested in the December general elections, following the internal wrangling within both the NPP and the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

NDC camp

The NDC in the constituency has also seen some issues in recent times which culminated in months of  legal tussle.

The Incumbent Member of Parliament, Nii Armah Ashietey, who lost in the NDC’s primary to Dr. Zanetor Rawlings, Daughter of Jerry John Rawlings, dragged the former to court to have the polls annulled.

He complained that Dr. Zanetor should be disqualified because she was not a registered voter prior to her election.

But the court eventually cleared Dr. Zanetor and Nii Ashietey discontinued the case.

PPP camp

The running mate to the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) flagbearer in 2012, Eva Lokko, is also aspiring to represent the constituency in Parliament on the ticket of the PPP.
