According to the police a Ghanaian taxi driver, believed to be an accomplice, was also arrested.

They were nabbed at their hideout at Oyarifa in Accra.

Cyber-crime to cost Ghana $100m in 2018

An information security expert had earlier told Citi News that Ghanaian businesses stand to lose 100 million dollars from cyber-crime in 2018, if pragmatic measures are not put in place to minimize it.

According to a Managing Partner at cybersecurity firm, Delta 3 International, Del Aden, the incidence of cyber-crime in Ghana will continue to rise unless businesses put effective counter measures in place.

“Businesses in Ghana stand to lose nearly 100 million dollars to cyber-crime. That’s why everyone needs to sit up and implement effective measures of counter cyber-crime,” he warned.

Three Nigeria nationals were arrested last Friday at the Customs Check Point in Dabala for smuggling two vessels suspected of containing mercury into Ghana.

The trio; Musah Ibrahim, aged 44, Munkaila Yakubu, aged 53 and Hassan Gibril, aged 52, admitted they owned the items but were unable to show Customs officials any documents covering the importation of the elements.

The three were onboard a Toyota Corolla S; an Aflao-Accra bound hiring car with registration number GY 2343 – 13.

The Aflao Sector Commander, Mr Frank Ashong who confirmed the incident to Citi News believes the trio might have smuggled the items through unapproved routes into the country.

A detention receipt was issued and the suspects, together with the items, have since been transferred to the Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) Head Office for further investigation.

The country’s revenue collectors have expressed concerns over the influx of uncustomed goods into the country, denying the state of the needed revenue for development projects.

This latest bust is the third in the space of a week by the Aflao Sector Command as part of increased efforts to clamp down on illegal activities along the country’s eastern frontiers.

Two Nigerians, who have been accused of recruiting girls between the ages of 17 and 20, from Nigeria to Ghana, and engaging them in prostitution, have appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

They are Joy John, a beautician, and Sandra Sunday, a hair stylist. Joy has been charged with human trafficking, while Sandra is facing a charge of abetment of crime.

They have pleaded not guilty, and the Court, presided over by Mrs Ruby Aryeetey, has remanded them into custody.

According to the Court, the accused persons were foreigners, and their current place of abode per the facts of the police was a guest house.

Meanwhile, one the accused persons’ accomplice, known as Mercy, is at large.

DSP C.K. Abandamlora, the prosecutor, said the complainant was a fashion designer residing at Kasoa, while the accused persons resided in Classic Guest House at Nungua-Adegon, in Accra.

In August this year, the Prosecution said Joy went to Nigeria and recruited three of the victims who were about 17, 18 and 20 years old respectively, under the pretext that they were going to work in a restaurant in Ghana.

On arriving in Ghana, the prosecutor said, Joy, however, took the victims to the guesthouse at Nungua-Adegon and sent them out every night to go and engage in prostitution.

According to DSP Abadamlora, the victims were to render account between GHC 100 and GHC150 to the accused each day.

The Prosecution said Sandra abetted the crime when she was tasked by Joy to collect the daily earnings from the victims for nine days when she (Joy) travelled to Nigeria.

When Joy returned from Nigeria, Sandra gave her GHC 500 as proceeds from the victims.

The Prosecution said on November 30, this year, at about 0100 hours, the complainant and her friends who knew the victims in Nigeria saw them at a spot known as Kris berry at Nungua Adegon, and they asked the victim what they were doing there.

The complainant asked the victims to lead her with her friends to their place of abode and Sandra was arrested. She led the Police to arrest Joy but Mercy escaped.

The court differed its judgement and asked the accused to reappear on November 18.

Dozens of people have been killed in two explosions near a crowded market in the volatile central Nigerian city of Jos, witnesses say.

A local journalist reported at least 40 bodies in a hospital in Jos, with more being brought in.

Tension is rising in the area, with youths blocking some roads.

Jos has seen several deadly clashes between Christian and Muslim groups in recent years. Islamist group Boko Haram has also previously targeted the area.

A suicide attack in the northern city of Kano on Monday killed four people.

Abducted girls

A military spokesman told Agence France-Presse news agency that one bomb had been placed in a truck and another in a minibus, but this has not been independently confirmed.

Plateau state lies on the fault-line which divides Nigeria’s largely Muslim north from its mainly Christian south.

he state has been dogged by violence blamed on land disputes between semi-nomadic Muslim Fulani herdsmen and mainly Christian Berom farmers.

The Nigerian government is also currently trying to trace more than 200 girls captured by Boko Haram in April from a boarding school in the north-eastern town of Chibok.

The case has shocked the world and prompted foreign powers to send military advisers to assist Nigeria’s army tackle the insurgency.

On Tuesday, parliament approved a six-month extension of a state of emergency in three north-eastern states – Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.

More than 1,000 people have been killed in Boko Haram attacks this year but the government says it has pushed the militants back into their strongholds in Borno.

Boko Haram is fighting to overthrow the government and create an Islamic state.

Nigeria’s violence is not confined to the north.

Earlier this month a car bomb in the capital Abuja killed at least 19 people and injured 60 more.

The explosion happened close to a bus station where at least 70 people died in a bomb blast on 14 April.
