A Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, is expected to report to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), of the Police Service today [Tuesday], for investigations into the allegations of treason brought against him.

A member of his legal team, Victor Adawudu, assured that Mr. Anyidoho will present himself as directed by the police.

“We would abide by the terms of the [bail] conditions and go and see the police. That is all we need to do. They will decide what exactly the way forward is,” the Lawyer told Citi News.

In an interview on Accra-based Happy FM where he was commenting on the controversial Ghana-US defence cooperation agreement, Mr. Anyidoho warned that President Nana Akufo-Addo could be overthrown, stating that the overthrow will be in the form of a “civilian coup d’etat”.

Mr. Anyidoho was subsequently picked up last Tuesday by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

His Oyarifa residence in Accra was also searched before he was moved from the police headquarters and sent to an unknown location.

He was subsequently detained by the CID and spent two nights in the custody of the Bureau of National Investigations after which he was granted bail on Friday.

Police have also been permitted by a High Court to seize all electronic devices belonging to Mr. Anyidoho.

The electronic gadgets including laptops, iPhone and iPads, believed to store information related to treason in the premises of Mr. Anyidoho are to aid investigations.

Mr. Anyidoho is yet to be charged with any offence despite earlier reports that he had been charged with treason.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Minority has vowed to continue to pile pressure on the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the controversial defence cooperation agreement between Ghana and the US.

“We are wholly committed to holding the feet of the NPP and the Akufo-Addo government to the fire of accountability,” the Minority Spokesperson Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini said.

The Sagnarigu Constituency Member of Parliament, Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, Bolga Central constituency MP, Issac Adongo and a former Nanton MP, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, were speaking at a lecture organised by the Tertiary Education Institutions Network (TEIN) of the NDC at the Tamale Technical University.

The Sagnarigu MP, Alhaji A.B.A. Fuseini said the NDC was poised to hold the Akufo-Addo government accountable for their juicy campaign promises that won them power at the 2016 polls.

Alhaji Fusseini stressed that, “Government will see real fire and fury from the NDC in and outside of Parliament inasmuch as demonstrations and the Ghana-US Military Agreement are concerned. I am telling you something, we will make it costly for the NPP to carry forward the agreement.”

“The Executive would have executed the agreement before it was brought to Parliament. We brought it to the attention of the Speaker to no avail. So from day one we have been against it. It is an illegality. It is a walking contradiction and an affront to our constitution. They will tell you our NDC MPs approved this at the Committee level. It is blatant falsehood,” he fumed.

According to him, the NDC and their allies will not relax their resistance to the Ghana-US Army deal.

“The Akufo-Addo government is yet to see the very least of resistance against the Ghana-US Military Agreement from the Minority. We are very ready to spit fire over the controversial deal.”

He hinted of a nationwide protest by the Ghana First Patriotic Front and its allies against the deal.

“The Ghana First Patriotic Front demonstration was the first and smallest in a series of demonstrations that will rock this government. The selling of our sovereignty to the US is something we will hold President Akufo-Addo’s legs to the fire of accountability.”

“When ordinary people do not agree to something, no one can force them to it. The first demonstration by Ghana First Patriotic Front is first of many they are yet to see.”

Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed
Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed

A former MP for the Nanton constituency, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed challenged the government to account for the GHc 28.6 billion borrowed within one year.

“When the NDC was in government the current government led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo requested the NDC government to show them (NPP) prove of their borrowing. Now we are also asking them (NPP) to show us their bloated projects for us to see. They borrowed Ghc28.6 billion in one year and there is nothing to show. Nothing to show for it.”

“When prove was shown in roads, hospitals, schools, housing units among others in a “green book they (NPP) then turned around to question the cost by saying the projects costs were bloated. That’s how they are. NPP, you must know them.”

Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed insinuated that it will be politically suicidal to retain the Nana Akufo Addo government in power at the 2020 polls.

Economy

The MP for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo implored Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to save the economy from total collapse.

He described Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as a “Clueless and incompetent” head of government’s economic management team.

“These people are not only clueless, they are wicked people. Clearly these people are a danger to the future of Ghana’s growing business community.”

MP for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo
MP for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo

Issac Adongo accused government of masterminding the selective collapse of indigenous banks such as the Unibank, Capital Bank and the UT Bank.

“The Bank of Ghana’s selective application of its rules is to favour the parochial interest of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta who is not in favour of some shareholders of adb pledging their shares to uniBank Ghana.”

“Mr. Ofori-Atta and the leadership of the Bank of Ghana are the ones destroying private sector businesses using the advantage of political power to further their financial interest. We will not allow uniBank to be collapsed on the altar of political expediency. I want to encourage those of you here with uniBank accounts to stay put. The bank will bounce back to Duffour and its rightful owners,” Issac Adongo allayed fears.

The Bolgatanga Central MP said Nana Akufo Addo’s government which is clamoring “Ghana beyond Aid” was engaged in reckless borrowing.

“It is only NPP who have borrowed Ghc28.6 billion in one year but remains dry as it is. My worry is that this government is creating rising debt and Ghana is suffering from high rising debt and we are worried this will create problems for this country.”

The Police in Kukuom in the Brong Ahafo Region are on a manhunt for some thugs who allegedly attacked the private residence of the Member of Parliament for the Asunafo South Constituency, Eric Opoku, on Sunday, and vandalized vehicles on the compound.

The unknown assailants are also reported to have inflicted deep cutlass wounds on three other persons believed to be supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress.

The Police say it is unclear what triggered the attack.

In a Citi News interview, the Kukoum District Police Commander, DSP Robert Akwasi Boakye, said his outfit has picked up leads that will aid in the arrest of the suspects.

He said when they received the distress call, the attackers had long escaped so “we combed the town, we couldn’t get them, but we are still investigating in order to track them down.”

DSP Boakye said because the incident happened at night, the victims were able to identify a few of the attackers “so they mentioned their names to us.”

DSP Boakye had earlier told Citi News that the wounded persons are receiving treatment at the hospital.

“It is true that a case of such nature had occurred. Some hooligans attacked the MP for the constituency, Eric Opoku. They attacked his house and caused damage to his Land Cruiser vehicle and two other vehicles which were parked in his residence. They also caused damage to the main gate to his house and some sliding windows and doors.”

“They didn’t stop there, they went ahead to attack others who are also deemed to be NDC sympathizers, caused harm to some of them, and also caused damage to their properties and stole some of the properties,” he added.

DSP Boakye also said about three of the NDC sympathizers were really hurt after sustaining cutlass wounds on their heads and other parts of their bodies.

This is not the first time Eric Opoku’s private residence has been attacked.

In December 2017, a similar incident happened.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), has described the decision to change the name of the seat of government from Flagstaff House to Jubilee House as a diversionary tactic from the Akufo-Addo administration.

The NDC, in a statement, urged Ghanaians not to lose sight of the fight against the ratification of the controversial defence cooperation agreement between Ghana and the US.

[contextly_sidebar id=”zEXL3iRpTmfktQt6GGzPdu6rOVlqv49G”]The deal has had some Ghanaians expressing fears that the US Army has been granted permission to establish a military base, though both parties to the agreement have dispelled such fears.

“…this renaming gimmick is intended to be a cheap diversionary tactic from the overwhelming demand from Ghanaians for President Akufo-Addo to stop mortgaging our sovereignty for a pittance,” the NDC stated.

The opposition party added that it will not be distracted from “continuing our demand for a better renegotiated mutually acceptable and reciprocally respectful agreement with the United States of America, which remains a friendly nation.”

“The NDC urges Ghanaians not to fall for this needless diversion and remain steadfast in the defence of our sovereignty and national dignity,” the statement added.

Koku Anyidoho arrest

The NDC’s opposition to the deal saw the arrest of its Deputy General Secretary of the party, Koku Anyidoho.

Mr. Anyidoho was arrested on Tuesday for comments he made in his criticism of the ratification of the defence cooperation.

In an interview on Accra-based Happy FM, he warned of the overthrow of President Nana Akufo-Addo due to the ratification of the deal, stating that the overthrow will be in the form of a “civilian coup d’etat”.

He has since been granted bail.

Find below the full statement

NDC REACTS TO PRESIDENT AKUFO-ADDO’S RENAMING OF FLAGSTAFF HOUSE

WHEREAS there are many crucial issues of national importance begging for President Akufo-Addo’s urgent attention.

WHEREAS thousands of Ghanaians from all walks of life and different political persuasion protested in Accra yesterday in a mammoth Put Ghana First Demonstration demanding that President Akufo-Addo stops the betrayal of Ghanaians and takes Ghana out of the infamous GHANA-US Military Cooperation Agreement.

WHEREAS this renaming gimmick is intended to be a cheap diversionary tactic from the overwhelming demand from Ghanaians for President Akufo-Addo to stop mortgaging our sovereignty for a pittance.

WHEREAS this failed diversionary tactic will not stop us from continuing our demand for a better renegotiated mutually acceptable and reciprocally respectful agreement with the United States of America, which remains a friendly nation.

WHEREAS the NDC urges Ghanaians not to fall for this needless diversion and remain steadfast in the defense of our sovereignty and national dignity.

WHEREAS in wishing President Akuffo-Addo a happy birthday – we expect him to know that this is not the birthday present Ghanaians deserve. Ghanaians look forward to the President re-assessing his priorities and begin listening to the cries of the very people who made him President.

Signed,
Johnson Asiedu Nketiah

The National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Adams has indicated the resolve of his party to continue its critique of the Akufo-Addo government following the arrest of its Deputy General Secretary of Koku Anyidoho.

Mr Anyidoho was arrested on Tuesday for comments he made in his criticism of the ratification of the controversial defence cooperation agreement between Ghana and the US, which were deemed treasonable.

[contextly_sidebar id=”MIibAEMs7bflq8Qd3ODaXH6d1VoTAlMd”]His Oyarifa residence in Accra was also searched before he was moved from the police headquarters and sent to an unknown location after he was refused bail.

In an interview on Accra-based Happy FM, he warned of the overthrow of President Nana Akufo-Addo due to the ratification of the deal, stating that the overthrow will be in the form of a “civilian coup d’etat”.

Speaking after Mr. Anyidoho finalised processes for his bail, Mr. Adams said the NDC had only grown bolder by the treatment of its Deputy General Secretary.

“We in the NDC will not stop speaking about the wrongs that this government and President Nana Akufo-Addo and his VicePresident Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia are visiting on this country and continue to visit on the country.”

“Indeed were even more emboldened to continue to raise the wrongs and we are going to continue doing this. We will fight and speak against this occupation of foreign forces in our land. We will make sure the sovereignty of Ghana is protected,” Mr. Adams said.

The day after Mr. Anyidoho’s arrest, NDC bigwigs joined the Ghana First Patriotic Front, a coalition of opposition political parties, to demonstrate against the government for approving the controversial defence cooperation.

Support from Mahama

Former President, John Mahama was unhappy with the way Mr. Anyidoho was taken into custody by the police after the comments he made.

On Wednesday, Mr Mahama criticised the Police for what he described as their ‘high-handed’ responses to “innocent” Ghanaians who massed up at the Police Headquarters on Tuesday night in solidarity with the arrested NDC national executive.

In a Facebook post, the former President chided Akufo-Addo government for the manner in which Mr Anyidoho was arrested.

He, however, did not make mention of the comments made by Mr Anyidoho which have been widely condemned.

Mr. Mahama later visited Mr Anyidoho at the BNI headquarters.

Embattled Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, appeared to be in high spirits when former President, John Mahama visited him at the Bureau of National Investigation’s headquarters.

This was a day after Mr. Anyidoho was detained for making treasonable comments.

Mr. Mahama was pictured with Anyidoho, along with Julius Debrah, who served as his Chief of Staff; the NDC General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia and former Attorney General, Betty Mould Iddrisu, at the BNI headquarters

It is unclear how Mr. Mahama was able to gain access to Mr. Anyidoho and got the opportunity to take pictures with him.

Mr. Mahama’s recent comments on social media suggest that former President did not approve of the way Mr. Anyidoho was taken into custody by the police.

Earlier on Wednesday, Mr. Mahama criticised the Police for what he described as their ‘high-handed’ responses to “innocent” Ghanaians who massed up at the Police Headquarters on Tuesday night in solidarity with Koku Anyidoho.

In a Facebook post, the former President chided the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and President Akufo-Addo for the manner in which Mr. Anyidoho was arrested and later charged with treason.

He, however, did not make mention of the comments made by Mr. Anyidoho which have been widely condemned and considered treasonable.

As a party that prides itself in the non-criminalization of speech, with a self-acclaimed human rights activist as President, the arrest of K. Anyidoho with armed men in the middle of a press event is obviously disproportionate. Moreso, the high-handed police response to innocent citizens waiting at the CID HQ is condemnable.

Building the treason case

Police have since been given permission to seize all electronic devices belonging to Mr. Anyidoho

A warrant from the High Court, sighted by Citi News, ordered that electronic gadgets including laptops, iPhone and iPads, believed to store information related to treason in the premises of Koku Anyidoho and his supposed agents, are to be seized to aid the police investigation.

Koku Anyidoho
Koku Anyidoho

This development follows the CID’s request to Accra-based Happy FM to produce the official copy of tape on which the Koku Anyidoho is believed to have made the treasonable comments.

Mr. Anyidoho was picked up at the International Press centre on Tuesday to assist the police with investigations and spent Tuesday night in the custody of the police after being charged with treason.

His Oyarifa residence in Accra was also searched before he was moved from the police headquarters and sent to an unknown location after he was refused bail.

What Koku said

Koku Anyidoho, in the interview, suggested that President Nana Akufo-Addo will be overthrown because of the ratification of the controversial defence cooperation agreement between Ghana and the US.

He said the overthrow will be in the form of a “civilian coup d’etat”.

“There will be a civilian coup d’état. There will be a social revolution. We [NDC] are starting it on Wednesday. The movement is starting on Wednesday. Nana Addo will have sleepless nights. He will suffer diarrhoea. He said he wanted to be President, but we will make sure he will be fed up on the seat.”

The host of the show on which the comments were made, Kwame Affrifa, has also been invited by the police to aid in their investigations.

‘No option of bail’

In relation to bail denial, Koku Anyidoho’s lawyer, Victor Kojogah Adawudu, said he suspected the influence of some ‘external forces’ in the refusal to grant his client bail.

According to Mr. Adawudu, although the charge of treason brought against Koku Anyidoho is a bailable offence, the security agencies have refused to grant his client that option.

“…we felt that there might be some interference coming from somewhere,” he said.

Hundreds of Ghanaians today [Wednesday], joined the Ghana First Patriotic Front, a coalition of opposition political parties, to demonstrate against the government for approving the controversial defence cooperation agreement between Ghana and the US despite the massive resistance.

Several politicians including the Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah, former Trade Minister, Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, former Transport Minister, Dzifa Ativor, Deputy Minority Leader, James Klutse Avedzi among others joined the demonstration.

Prior to the demonstration, Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, was picked up by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for making some comments deemed treasonable and has been charged with treason.

Mr. Anyidoho had, in an interview on Accra-based Happy FM, indicated that President Akufo-Addo will be overthrown because of the ratification of the controversial defence cooperation agreement between Ghana and the US.

He however did not make mention of the comments by Mr. Anyidoho which has been widely condemned and considered treasonable.

Anyidoho with armed men in the middle of a press event is obviously disproportionate. Moreso, the high-handed police response to innocent citizens waiting at the CID HQ is condemnable,” he said.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID), on Tuesday afternoon picked up Koku Anyidoho at the International Press Center for making what has been described as treasonable comments.

He was picked up during a press conference by a group of opposition political parties known as the Inter-Party Coalition for National Sovereignty, who are kicking against the Ghana-US Defence Cooperation agreement ratified by Parliament last Friday.

Following his arrest, hundreds of sympathizers and supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) including its leaders, massed up at the Police Headquarters in Accra, where Anyidoho was being interrogated.

The gathering, who appeared agitated, were challenged by some tens of armed police men who fired gunshots and used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd.

The development left some of the protesters sustaining various degrees of injuring including reports of rubber bullet wounds.

What did Koku Anyidoho say?

Mr. Anyidoho in an interview on Accra-based Happy FM, indicated that President Akufo-Addo will be overthrown just like his father and the late Dr. K. A Busia due to the ratification of the controversial defence cooperation agreement between the US and the government of Ghana.

“Somebody should tell Nana Addo that history has a very interesting way of repeating itself. On the 13th of January 1972, a certain Colonel Ignatius Kutu Acheampong led an insurrection that removed the progress party from power. Busia was the Prime Minister and Akufo Addo’s father was the ceremonial President. Someone should tell Akufo-Addo that history has an interesting way of repeating itself,” Anyidoho warned.

When he was asked by the Host to clarify his statement, Koku Anyidoho maintained that “history has an interesting way of repeating itself.”

“There will be a civilian coup d’état. There will be a social revolution. We [NDC] are starting it on Wednesday. The movement is starting on Wednesday. Nana Addo will have sleepless nights. He will suffer diarrhea. He said he wanted to be president, but we will make sure he will be fed up on the seat,’’ he noted further.

Meanwhile, John Mahama has declared his support for a demonstration dubbed #GhanaFirst, which is in protest of the government’s decision to ratify the Ghana-US defence cooperation.
