A man has been charged with killing his girlfriend’s six-month-old baby after mistaking him for a spider. Dwayne Lindsey is said to have let out a ‘long dingo howl’ after realising something was wrong with Chayse Dearing, who suffered severe traumatic brain and spinal chord injuries.

Lindsey, who is on trial in the Supreme Court of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia, had been alone with Chayse when he died on June 26, 2016. His mother, Michelle Dearing, had gone on a shopping trip with friends to a 24-hour supermarket at 4am on the morning of Chayse’s death. Lindsey, from Melbourne, says the baby had fallen asleep on his chest and claims he jumped up in fright after mistaking the baby for a spider. He says Chayse rolled off his chest and hit his head against a heater, accidentally killing him.

But prosecutor Nicholas Papas QC has reportedly said Mr Lindsey’s version of events did not match medical reports, which suggested Chayse’s death was unlikely to have been accidental. Neighbour Brian Woods said – via pre-recorded evidence played to the court – that on the night of Chayse’s death, he heard people next door arguing, keeping him awake for hours.

Then about 8am, he heard Lindsey trying to wake the baby. ‘He kept saying “hey you”. He said it about 60 times,’ Mr Woods said. Lindsey let out a ‘long dingo howl’ when he started to ‘realise there’s something pretty serious with the baby’, the witness added. Mr Woods said he heard swearing and Lindsey stomping his feet before calling the child’s mother about 8.20am, telling her ‘there’s something wrong with the baby – come home’. Chayse’s mother Michelle Dearing told the court yesterday that she and Lindsey, then 34, were planning to get married before the fateful night. She said Lindsey had proposed to her only nights earlier.

Another woman told the court how she’d been at Kmart with the boy’s mother when Lindsey called them, saying ‘Chayse wasn’t breathing’. ‘I heard Michelle screaming my name and I knew something was wrong,’ Melissa Jones said. ‘She was a mess.’ She said she called triple zero and returned home with Ms Dearing and another woman to find ‘medics working on Chayse’. ‘Michelle collapsed in the doorway of my bedroom. She was in shock basically,’ she said.

A Canadian billionaire and his wife have been found dead at their home in Toronto in circumstances that police described as “suspicious”.

The bodies of Barry Sherman and his wife Honey were found in the basement by an estate agent, reports said.

Mr Sherman was the founder and chairman of pharmaceutical giant Apotex, which sells generic medicines around the world.

He was one of Canada’s richest men and a prominent philanthropist.

There was no sign of forced entry to the property, police said in a statement Friday evening. Local media reported that investigators were not searching for a suspect at this time.

Detective Brandon Price told Canadian broadcaster CBC that investigators were still trying to determine if there was foul play involved.

Police gave few details and did not confirm the identities of the deceased. However, they were named locally by friends and by officials who reacted with shock at the news.

“I am beyond words right now,” Ontario’s Health Minister Eric Hoskins said on Twitter.

“My dear friends Barry and Honey Sherman have been found dead. Wonderful human beings, incredible philanthropists, great leaders in health care.”

Senator Linda Frum presented the couple with a Canadian 150th anniversary medal in late November, awarded to Canadians for “generosity, dedication, volunteerism and hard work”.

“Today I am gutted by the loss of Honey and Barry Sherman. Our community is steeped in grief. I am heartbroken,” she said.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted his condolences to the couple’s family and friends.

A police spokesman said emergency services were called to the house just before noon on Friday.

“The circumstances of their death appear suspicious and we are treating it that way,” said Constable David Hopkinson.

The couple had recently put their luxury home up for sale and their bodies were found by an estate agent who was at the property to prepare it for an open-house viewing, the Toronto Globe and Mail reported, citing a family member.

Apotex said in a statement: “All of us at Apotex are deeply shocked and saddened by this news and our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time.”

The couple had four children.

Mr Sherman founded Apotex Inc in 1974 and the firm says it is now the seventh biggest drug maker in the world.

Forbes magazine puts Mr Sherman’s personal net worth at $3.2bn (£2.4bn).

He was rushed to the Asankragua Catholic Hospital where doctors are trying to resuscitate him.

]]>
Police in Malta have arrested 10 suspects over the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia, the country’s prime minister has said, nearly two months after the anti-corruption journalist was killed by a powerful car bomb.

Joseph Muscat told a press conference that eight people – all Maltese nationals, most with criminal records – had been detained in early-morning raids in three different parts of the island. He tweeted later that two more suspects were also in custody.

Muscat said there was a “reasonable suspicion” the suspects were involved in the killing of Caruana Galizia, whose popular blog attacked high-level political corruption, shady business dealings and organised crime on the island.

The joint police and military operation was the first breakthrough for the Maltese investigation, which has been helped by experts from the FBI, Europol and the Finnish and Dutch security services. Police now have 48 hours to interrogate the suspects and either charge or release them.

Muscat, who was a frequent target of Caruana Galizia’s blog reports along with others in his inner circle, said he could give no further details of the arrests, the suspects or the evidence against them, but offered his “personal commitment” that those responsible for the killing would be found.

Caruana Galizia’s son Matthew, who is also a reporter, told the Guardian his family were “in the dark” about the arrests and had been given no further information beyond a phone call from a magistrate’s office after the arrests were made public.

At a separate event, the island’s police commissioner, Lawrence Cutajar, refused to take any questions about the arrests, which have been called one of the biggest police operations in Maltese history.

They took place in Marsa, where other car bombings have occurred, as well as Zebbug, a village in central Malta, and in the northern town of St Paul’s Bay. A section of Lighters Wharf in the port area of Marsa was still sealed off later on Monday as military personnel and police used sniffer dogs to search buildings.

The murder on 16 October sent shockwaves through the island and alarmed the EU, which was already concerned about the rule of law on Malta. The bloc’s smallest member state has often been branded a haven for dubious foreign money.

Last week, MEPs visiting Malta on a fact-finding mission said they had arrived “seriously concerned” about the rule of law and were leaving “even more worried”. They said an apparent reluctance to investigate and prosecute major cases had created a “perception of impunity”.

The journalist’s family are taking legal action against the island’s police, saying the investigation into the killing cannot be impartial and independent since Caruana Galizia wrote critical articles about both the senior officer now running it, Silvio Valletta, and his wife, a top government minister.

The family have alleged that her murder was a “targeted killing” of a journalist whose work focused on uncovering “corruption, criminality, conflicts of interest and ethical failures in decision-making” by politicians and their associates.

The family have raised other concerns about the investigation, which they say appears to be focusing only on forensic evidence rather than examining financial transactions that could uncover vital evidence. They also suggest leaks from within the police could intimidate potential informants.

The most significant investigations by the murdered journalist stemmed from the Panama Papers, a leak of documents from the archives of the offshore law firm Mossack Fonseca. Malta’s government is offering a €1m reward for information relating to the killing.

A top Italian prosecutor, Carmelo Zuccaro, has said he believes the murder could be linked to an investigation he is leading into a fuel-smuggling operation spanning Libya, Malta and Italy and involving organised crime groups in Sicily. Caruana Galizia wrote about some of those linked to the inquiry.

Antonio Di Pietro, an Italian politician and judge who was a prosecutor in Italy’s anti-corruption Mani Pulite corruption trials in the 1990s, said on Monday that Caruana Galizia’s murder had all the hallmarks of a mafia-style killing.

“It was professional and a classic mafia-style homicide,” Di Pietro told the Times of Malta. “The mafia’s style is intimidation. The target was not only poor Caruana Galizia … but all those around her because it was a clear warning: be careful or you’ll suffer the same fate.”

Responding to a public letter from eight of the world’s largest media organisations including the New York Times, BBC and the Guardian, the first vice-president of the EU commission, Frans Timmermans, last month issued a strong warning to Malta.

“The eyes of Europe are on the Maltese authorities,” Timmermans said. “We want those directly and indirectly responsible for this horrible murder to be brought to justice.”

Joshua Ababaio, a coconut seller in Sokode Bagble in the Ho Municipality has been arrested for allegedly murdering his wife and dumping the body in a pond.

Madam Mercy Nfodjoh, mother of the deceased, told the media that, the deceased, Esther Amoasi, 25, lived with her in Sokode Bagble with her three children aged between two and six.

She said on the evening of Friday July 7, 2017, Esther went for a wake-keeping in the community and did not return.

Madam Nfodjoh said at about 0400 hours on Saturday, she went to Joshua’s house in search of her daughter only to meet his landlady complaining about how Ababaio allegedly borrowed an amount of GHC 15 from her at around 0200 hours to pay a taxi driver.

The mother of the deceased said she later received a call at about 0800 hours informing her that Esther’s body had been discovered floating in a pond at a sand winning site at the outskirts of the village.

Madam Nfodjoh said the youth of the town were alerted and with the Police, retrieved the body.

She said Joshua called her later in the afternoon to ask for forgiveness, claiming he paid GHC 470 to two other persons; Lucky Kumah, and Ben to murder the deceased with a club.

Joshua told her that Lucky was the one who told him about Esther’s alleged infidelity which led to the murder plot.

Joshua was arrested on Sunday at Wodome near Kpetoe by the Togolese police and handed over to personnel of the Ho Municipal Police.

His accomplices had also been arrested.

The Police confirmed the incident and said the body of the deceased had since been deposited at the Ho Municipal Mortuary pending autopsy.

Suspected armed robbers have shot and wounded a Police officer at Akwansrem in the Ashanti Region.

Lance Corporal Kwaku Mensah, who was stationed at Anwiankwanta in the Bekwai Municipality, sustained several gunshot wounds when gunmen attacked a vehicle he was travelling on.

[contextly_sidebar id=”RQVCc7y7SUKCHVf03WXTrd25BRRtxs8e”]He is currently receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

Narrating the incident to Citi News, the Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Juliana Obeng, said  “A Sprinter bus was coming from Cape Coast to Kumasi with 23 passengers on board. Now at about 10 in the night, we heard that this bus had been attacked by some suspected armed robbers. These men had guns and opened fire on passengers, forcing the driver to stop. What happened was that after investigation, we noticed that on board the vehicle was a Policeman who was returning from official duties back to his station. As we speak, the Policeman is at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital responding to treatment as a result of gunshot wounds he sustained. It was only the Policeman who was injured in the process, the others were not attacked.

Madam Obeng said the Police have commenced investigations into the incident to arrest the culprits.

“I guess until investigation starts into the incident it will be too early to say he was the target. That notwithstanding we are not ruling anything out. Investigations are underway for us to tell whether he was the target or not. He is responding to treatment and we will ensure that we bring the armed robbers to book,” she said.

Michel Camp incident

This incident follows a similar one that occurred a few days ago involving a Police Officer, Michael Kporye, who was killed while on patrol duties at Tulaku near Michel camp in the Tema area.

Michael was on night patrol duties using his motorbike, when two unknown armed assailants who were also on a motorbike, shot him to death.

Another Police officer, Lance Corporal Robert Kumi Ackah of the Tamale Rapid Deployment Force was shot and killed after he was mistaken for an armed robber a few weeks ago.
