The management of the Africa Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has launched investigations into the alleged criminal misconduct of two executives of the hall.

The two; President of the hall, Winfred Abotsi and the General Secretary, Eunice Adjetey, have also been asked to step aside while the investigations continue.

The executives are said to have withheld monies meant for the acquisition of ceiling fans to about 192 rooms and some projects for the hall.

The GHc150,000 was given as sponsorship by the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) to assist the hall in its 50th-anniversary celebration.

Both management and executives of the hall put in the request to secure the sponsorship from the GNPC for the provision of projects and fans for the hall.

The two executives are alleged to have later gone for the cheque from the GNPC and deposited it into a bank account created in the name of the hall.

Management of the hall later became aware of these actions and asked them to step aside for investigations.

Citi News sighted a letter directing the two to step aside signed by the hall warden.

The University Relations Officer, Kwabena Yeboah said to Citi News authorities will quicken the investigations to get to the bottom of the matter.

He also denied reports that the sponsorship package from the GNPC was to be used for a beauty pageant.

Citi News understands that Eunice Adjetey, who wants to contest for president of the Hall, has been refused vetting on two occasions on grounds of the alleged criminal misconduct.

Winifred Abotsi has already declared her intentions to run for the position of SRC president in KNUST later this year.

Some alumni of the Unity Hall at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) besieged the Ministry of Education to protest the University’s decision to convert all male halls into mixed residential accommodation.

Arguing its case against the conversion, the group, which calls itself the Old Continentals Association, said the decision will erase erode the pan-African roots of the hall whilst “destroying the intention of the forebearers.”

Speaking to Citi News, the spokesperson for the Old Continentals Association, George Tetteh, insisted that the establishment of their hall was part of an African heritage which ought to be preserved.

“In summary, what we are petitioning the Ministry is that the intention to convert the hall into a mixed-sex hall is not welcomed by the old boys of the hall. The hall stands for a certain monumental legacy.

“The hall was named Continental Unity Hall. That reminds us of the continental struggle and the emancipation of our continent. So it doesn’t stand there just like that but it stands as a hall with certain historical significance,” he argued.

The Unity Hall, also known as Conti, and University Hall, also known as Katanga, are being converted to boost the female intake and meet international standards of gender balance, according to the school’s management.

Some students, however, believe that the management’s decision to convert the halls into mixed residences is a strategy to curtail the long-standing feud between the two halls, which has been known to turn bloody in the past.

Some alumni of the Unity Hall at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), say they will petition the Ministry of Education to halt a decision by the University’s management to convert all male halls into mixed residential accommodation.

The Unity Hall, also known as Conti, along with University Hall, also known as Katanga, are being converted to boost the female intake and meet international standards of gender balance, according to the school’s management.

Some students, however believe that the management’s decision to convert the halls into mixed, is a strategy to curtail the long-standing feud between the two halls, which has been known to turn bloody in the past.

The alumni of the two halls are however resisting the move, saying the reason given by the school is not good enough to collapse the tradition and heritage of the two male halls.

A former Unity Hall President, George Tetteh Wayo, indicated their resolve to Citi News, saying the alumni will go every length to see that the decision is reversed.

“We’ll put up a petition to the Education Minister because, definitely, it is that arm of government that looks into matters of education. So we would have to apply and we will put in that petition for the minister to look into the matter, and we have justifiable reasons why we think that this move by the university is not proper,” Mr. Wayo said.

The Spokesperson of the University, Kwame Yeboah Jnr., told Gemma Appiah of Citi FM’s partner station, Focus FM that, the University seeks to meet international standards of gender balance on University campuses.

The Lebanese community in Ghana has awarded scholarships to eight entrants of the Ghana School of Law.

This is a part of a scholarship programme that is being run by the community to promote Ghana’s development agenda through investments in the nation’s human resource base.

At a ceremony to present the scholarships, the Lebanese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E Ali Halabi, stressed the vital role of the Ghana School of Law in ensuring the realization of the rule of law, stating that, “the provision of quality legal education and the attainment of this favourable rule of law in society, are not mutually exclusive. It is therefore important to train visionary lawyers who would be key actors in achieving this societal growth.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”Sim7pJBCEEQBuBh8USutyzhcldSghsC7″]A representative of the beneficiaries, Afia Poku, thanked the Lebanese community for their benevolence, noting that, through this award, they have “showcased their adherence to upholding the rule of law in Ghana as they have recognized that, the law is the fiber that holds our society together and heals societal rifts.”

Professor Kofi Quashigah, Dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of Ghana, commended the Lebanese community in Ghana for investing in Ghana’s rule of law through the scheme.

He reflected on the Lebanese community’s assistance to the faculty for the past five years, which included a scholarship to undergraduate students pursuing LLB.

The Scholarship

For five years, the Lebanese community in Ghana has had in place a scholarship scheme for undergraduate law students from the University of Ghana and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and Communications students from the Ghana Institute of Journalism.

Postgraduate students from the Ghana Institute of Journalism and the Ghana School of Law have also benefited from this scheme.

Leadership of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) chapter of the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG), has bemoaned the increasingly partisan politics in the affairs of student unions in the country.

The developments according to GRASAG affects their activities.

[contextly_sidebar id=”PRRDjkkrSH56pgvxkQ74en1ZwlWnmPi7″]KNUST-chapter President of the Association, Kizito Osei Fosu, expressed the concerns at the 2017 Educational Forum organized by the GRASAG-KNUST Women’s Commission in Kumasi.

The forum, which was under theme, “Today’s Graduate; Exploring Numerous Opportunities” exposed postgraduates, undergraduates and students from second cycle institutions to existing opportunities.

He said the infiltration of politics into student affairs, is affecting the entire administration of students’ unions in Ghana, and that steps must be taken to find a lasting solution.

Mr. Fosu described the happenings within as “bad and sickening”, saying that “now as it stands, we don’t have a NUGS President. And you know GRASAG-KNUST wouldn’t be able to walk to the Presidency to table our issues because there are structures.”

He indicated that, the absence of a NUGs President has halted all operations since no NEC meetings can take place, and grievances cannot be channeled to the appropriate quarters without someone spearheading such issues.

He further said students in Ghana have numerous concerns that need urgent attention, but that has not been done because of the current happenings within the student unions.

Authorities at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have denied reports that some students have been left stranded at the school due to challenges in securing accommodation.

Reports from the school on Tuesday, September 13, indicated that hundreds of freshers and some continuing students were forced to spend the night with friends in already crowded rooms while others put up with relatives outside the campus.

A reporter with KNUST’s Focus FM, Edward Oppong Marfo, in an earlier interview with Citi News said, some of the freshers who had traveled from many parts of the country, were unable to secure accommodation in any of the school’s traditional halls.

“All first year students were supposed to choose their rooms online to be given one of the traditional halls of residence; but this year, the number of first years admitted, exceeded the required capacity of the traditional halls, so some of the first years were forced to move outside of campus to look for hostels”, he said.

Alternative accommodation facilities available

According to the Deputy Registrar at the University Relations Office of KNUST, Vincent Ankamah Lomotey, the school through the Dean of Student’s office has inspected and listed some registered hostel facilities available to accommodate freshers.

He accused the affected students of not reading the school’s notices on directions to secure the available accommodation facilities.

He told Citi News, “the students are not reading and they must be reading… those who have not got places in the halls of residence are supposed to go to the Dean of students’ office and then they are directed to those hostels that the [Dean of Student’s office] has inspected so nobody is stranded here” .

Cost of Hostel Facility

According to a notice from the Dean of Student’s office, the available residential facilities cost between GH¢1,000 and GH¢ 1,200.

The Ghana Police Service says it will not permit any demonstration or protest at the Flagstaff House or anywhere close to the seat of government.

According to the police administration, contrary to reports that it has granted permission for a group of Ghanaians to picket at the Flagstaff House on Tuesday, the Public Relations Officer of the Greater Accra Police Command, DSP Freeman Tettey noted that ‘’they can do it but not at the Flagstaff House’’.

‘’We’ve agreed that they can do it [demonstrate or picket] but not at the Flagstaff House;… [we] agreed that they converge at the Efua Sutherland Park do whatever they want to do, express themselves and if they want to present a petition to the authorities, two or three of them will be escorted to do that,’’ DSP Tettey said.

Explaining why the protestors cannot demonstrate at the Flagstaff House as planned, he said the seat of government is a security zone and the laws do not permit them or any other person to demonstrate there or anywhere around.

‘’It [Flagstaff House] is a security zone; aside from that there are other facilities there that are very delicate, that are very sensitive facilities. So we cannot allow them to demonstrate,’’ he added.

DSP Tettey also said the police had a frank discourse with the organizers of the ‘Occupy Flag Staff House’ protest and the police made it clear to them that the group cannot picket at the Flagstaff House on Tuesday.

He stated that nobody will be allowed to demonstrate close to the seat of government.

The group in a statement stated that “the Ghana Police Service and Concerned Ghanaians for Responsible Governance (CGRG) have agreed that come tomorrow, July 1, 2014 the protest dubbed #occupyflagstaffhouse or #occupyflagstaff and the presentation of a petition to H.E. John Dramani Mahama will take place as planned. “

The group further indicated that the only alteration to the event is that Ghanaians will converge on the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park at 6am instead of the Flag Staff House.

“The Ghana Police Service has graciously assured us of protection for the entire duration of the protest. Let us however, stress again that we shall not condone any form of violence, hooliganism or lawlessness,” it warned.
