Authorities at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have denied reports that some students have been left stranded at the school due to challenges in securing accommodation.

Reports from the school on Tuesday, September 13, indicated that hundreds of freshers and some continuing students were forced to spend the night with friends in already crowded rooms while others put up with relatives outside the campus.

A reporter with KNUST’s Focus FM, Edward Oppong Marfo, in an earlier interview with Citi News said, some of the freshers who had traveled from many parts of the country, were unable to secure accommodation in any of the school’s traditional halls.

“All first year students were supposed to choose their rooms online to be given one of the traditional halls of residence; but this year, the number of first years admitted, exceeded the required capacity of the traditional halls, so some of the first years were forced to move outside of campus to look for hostels”, he said.

Alternative accommodation facilities available

According to the Deputy Registrar at the University Relations Office of KNUST, Vincent Ankamah Lomotey, the school through the Dean of Student’s office has inspected and listed some registered hostel facilities available to accommodate freshers.

He accused the affected students of not reading the school’s notices on directions to secure the available accommodation facilities.

He told Citi News, “the students are not reading and they must be reading… those who have not got places in the halls of residence are supposed to go to the Dean of students’ office and then they are directed to those hostels that the [Dean of Student’s office] has inspected so nobody is stranded here” .

Cost of Hostel Facility

According to a notice from the Dean of Student’s office, the available residential facilities cost between GH¢1,000 and GH¢ 1,200.
