Floyd Mayweather put up a startling performance as he worked to stop Conor McGregor in the 10th round of thrilling boxing action in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

The knockout came at a time when McGregor had absolutely nothing left despite winning the first four rounds.

From round four, Mayweather turned the fight on its head.

McGregor, with the little boxing ring experience he has, did give him something to think about during the fight.

Mayweather after the fight said McGregor was a lot better than he thought.

“He (McGregor) is a tough competitor and we gave them what the fans wanted to see – I owed them for the Manny Pacquiao fight.

“He was a lot better than I thought, he was a tough competitor, but I was the better man tonight. Our game plan was to take our time, let him shoot his heavy shots and take him out at the end.

“In the MMA he fights 25 minutes really hard and after 25 minutes he starts to slow down. I guaranteed everybody this would not go the difference. Boxing’s reputation was on the line.”

McGregor, however, said he thought the referee should have allowed the fight to continue till Mayweather was able to put him down.

“I took the early rounds pretty handy, he adjusted. He’s composed – not that fast or powerful, but boy is he composed and he was making me throw.”

“Fair play to him, what a career he’s had. I thought it was a little early with the stoppage. I would have liked to have hit the floor, he (the referee) should have let me keep going. I was just a little fatigued. He was a lot more composed under the shots – that’s what 50 professional fights will give you.

“I’ve been strangled on live TV and came back, so I would have liked him to have let it go. It was some buzz. I thought we were close. It was fatigue. The referee could have let it keep going, let the man put me down.

“No one is taking these kinds of risks. I’ll take it on the chin, it’s another day for me.”

The opening event of a week of build-up to potentially the most lucrative fight in boxing history produced chaotic scenes in Las Vegas, with Floyd Mayweather booed by unhappy fans.

The undefeated American arrived and was barely visible, entering amid a large entourage before being largely hidden on stage by a media scrum.

Conor McGregor, his UFC champion challenger, then arrived and made a beeline for an Irish flag in the crowd before performing an impromptu lap of fans, as media and security gave chase.

Once on stage, the 29-year-old Irishman said he would be “calm and cold” when he met the former five-weight boxing world champion on Saturday.

“He needs to be put to sleep,” said McGregor. “He will wake up a better man. I am going to do that for him.”
Why the Tuesday chaos?

About 1,000 media from around the world have been accredited for Saturday’s bout, many of them to be housed away from the venue at a media tent a short walk from the T-Mobile Arena.

Outside the arena, a large security presence tried to keep the ‘Grand Arrivals’ ceremony cordial on Tuesday afternoon.

Undercard fighters, including Wales’ Nathan Cleverly, posed for head-to-head pictures without problems, until Mayweather entered.

McGregor was due on stage first but with both men late for the event, his rival stepped up, leaving the Dublin fighter to follow when he arrived.

But those who had waited in temperatures of over 40C on a street adjacent to Las Vegas’ famous strip showed their frustration when photographers and reporters surrounded 40-year-old Mayweather, blocking any sight of the former five-division world champion.

Cries of “we want Conor” broke out from American fans, while added security was placed at the front of the stage, with media warned not to rush forward when McGregor arrived.

When he did, flanked by his own entourage, they brushed shoulders with the departing Mayweather group, prompting brief panic among the security detail. McGregor exchanged heated words with one member of the Mayweather group and later rowed with ex-sparring partner Paulie Malignaggi.

“Over the course of the next week, Vegas is Ireland,” said McGregor, after eventually making it to the stage. “We run Las Vegas. We are here to take over this whole city.”

Organisers say the bout – which will be broadcast on BBC Radio 5 live – is the most accessible in boxing history, with fans able to watch through social platforms. They estimate around a billion people will watch worldwide.

It is expected the bout could generate over $600m and go close to becoming the richest in boxing history.

Victory for Mayweather, who has come out of retirement for the fight, would take his record to 50 wins from 50 bouts and surpass the late Rocky Marciano’s flawless 49-fight record.

Conor McGregor says Floyd Mayweather is “scared” in the build-up to their multi-million dollar fight on 26 August in Las Vegas.

Mayweather, 40, said on Thursday that the bout “won’t go the distance”.

Speaking at a media workout on Friday, McGregor, 29, said: “You know what I heard him say yesterday? Nothing. I saw a man scared… I saw a man trying to talk himself out of it.

“I’m preparing to win, and to win in devastating fashion.”

UFC lightweight champion McGregor, who has never boxed professionally, is due to face Mayweather in a 12-round super welterweight boxing bout that could earn both men about $100m.

Mayweather, who retired in 2015 with an unblemished 49-0 record, has beaten boxers such as Ricky Hatton, Manny Pacquiao and Oscar De La Hoya during his professional career and is aiming to surpass Rocky Marciano’s mark and move to 50-0.

But McGregor said he expects to defeat the American within 12 rounds.

The Irishman said: “The story of the fight will be waiting to see who takes a step back first.

“We all know Floyd is a great defensive boxer and he isn’t going to keep coming forward like he says. If he does, it’s going to be a quick night for me.

“I have been boxing my whole life so this is not a new experience for me. The critics say that Floyd has been there before. They discredit my training, my skills, my accomplishments.

“This isn’t new to me though, just like boxing isn’t new to me. I will rule over MMA and boxing with an iron fist after August 26.”

Samuel Anim Addo, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of BabyJet Promotions, has said that the arrival of American Legendary boxer, Floyd Mayweather Jr. to Ghana would have a positive impact on the nation’s brand.

The undefeated pound for pound boxing legend would visit Ghana for the first time on June 15, 2017.

In an interview with GNA sports, Mr. Anim Addo said “Floyd Mayweather’s arrival would have a positive impact on ‘brand Ghana’, people should forget about the amount of money involved. He might even spend more money than what he has taken from us before he leaves the country.”

“He spent over 1 million dollars when he visited South Africa, and it is likely that he would spend more in Ghana. I would urge all Ghanaians to be a part of this event as we sell Ghana to the world, we should all embrace it and push Ghana to the level she deserves”.

“BabyJet promotions are proud to be part of this event, made possible by Upscale Entertainment. We know they have taken the risk to pay a huge sum of money to bring Floyd Mayweather to Ghana and we appreciate their efforts”, said Anim Addo

As part of the activities lined up for the visit dubbed ‘Undefeated Tour’, Floyd Mayweather Jr would be present at the Bukom Arena to witness some boxing bouts on June 16th 2017. According to Mr. Anim Addo, BabyJet Promotions are ready to present worth-watching bouts for Mayweather.

“On 16th June, BabyJet Promotions would give Floyd Mayweather Jr something special at the Bukom Arena, we have done it before, and we will do it again, as we resurrected Ghana Boxing, when we matched two bitter rivals, Emmanuel Tagoe and George Ashie at the Accra Sports Stadium.

“It is not going to be different this year, especially in the presence of one of the all-time best athletes in the World.”

“There would be other Amateur bouts to support the event. Floyd Mayweather has got the eye to scout talented boxers and we are hopeful that our young boxers would give him a good impression of Ghana Boxing”,  Anim Addo said.
