The Mayor of the Sekondi-Tkoradi Metropolitan Assembly, Anthony Kobina Kurentsir Sam, and some other members of the assembly, over the weekend joined members of the public in a massive clean-up exercise throughout the Twin City.

The exercise, the first since the MCE took over as the metropolitan chief executive, saw corporate Ghana donating items such as brooms, drinking water, wheelbarrows, backhoe excavators, as well as waste evacuation trucks for the exercise.

The clean-up started at 6:00am across the metro, where members of each household were encouraged to clean their communities, whilst other members and ZoomLion staff were positioned at key areas such as the Kojokrom, Sekondi and the Takoradi Markets to rid those areas of filth.

Members of the Ghana Armed Forces were also deployed to assist in the clean-up, whilst others were deployed to ensure compliance with directives.

Chief of Essipong and the Member of Parliament for the Kwesimintsim Constituency, Joseph Mensah, led their people in their respective areas to participate in the exercise.

Speaking to journalists after the exercise, Mr. KK Sam, as he is affectionately called, expressed satisfaction at the level of participation and the work done in many parts of the metropolis.

He said “I’ve moved round to inspect work done in many parts of the metro and I think our people have done well. Some of our assembly members have helped to clean our surroundings and it worth commending. The chief of Essipong and her subjects were mobilized to clean their community. Those at Kojokrom, Sekondi and here in Takoradi have all done well.”

Apathy

Despite the turnout and work done, the apathy on the part of some residents was evident. Whilst some residents were seen going on with their normal routines, many others, especially market women at the Sekondi and Takoradi Markets cared little about the filth that had engulfed them.

“You have some of our women sitting by their wares at the periphery just waiting for the exercise to get over, so they move on with their trade. Others are behind the gates waiting for it to be opened whilst the exercise was going on. At Kojokrom, you had drivers plying their trade as if nothing was happening. Drivers at the Accra station were also on their usual business when a directive had been issued barring vehicle movement during the period”. Mr. KK Sam lamented.

We’ve learnt some lessons

Mr. Anthony Kurentsir Sam noted that, the lessons learnt will inform new measures to contain the apathy in the system.

He mentioned that “next month, we will block the road leading to the Central Business District to prevent all persons from entering the area. We will plead with the Ghana Private Road Transport Union, GPRTU, to enforce the ban on vehicular movement”.

“We will also ensure we have enough of the tools that will facilitate the exercise for our people. We will continue to sensitize our people on the need for them to all participate to ensure a cleaner city”.

The clean-up exercise received support from corporate organizations such as MTN, Eff-Ess Limited, Shop N Save, Ghana Ports and Habours Authority and many others.

The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) in the Western Region, has set May 6, 2017,  to embark on a mass clean-up exercise to rid the Twin City of filth.

This will be the first major cleanup exercise supervised by the new Mayor, Mr. Kobina Kurentsir Sam, since he assumed the reigns of leadership of the STMA.

Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis some 6 years back topped the list of the cleanest city in the country, but has since lost its glory.

“The population growth also accounts for the sanitation situation we have now. Filth has engulfed some parts of the city that we need to get rid of it in the upcoming clean-up exercise”, Special Aide to the Sekondi-Takoradi Mayor, Kwaku Twum Barima told Citi News.

The Assembly’s decision to embark on the May 6 clean-up exercise was first made known by the Mayor of STMA when he was confirmed on March 24, 2017.

However, the exercise was canceled due to logistical constraints.

The exercise, according to Mr. Barima, is special because, “it is going to be the first exercise the new Mayor for this administration is going to supervise. Besides, the first Saturday monthly exercise instituted by the previous administration has not been done for the past two months, so we will combine all that and do it in the upcoming exercise.”

Mr. Kwaku Twum Barima expressed satisfaction at the logistical support the Assembly has received so far.

He told Citi News that “we have had Amandi Ghana Limited donating backhoe for dredging, we have others donating wheelbarrows, Shop N Save has donated enough drinking water that will be enough throughout the exercise whilst some oil service companies have donated other useful equipment for this exercise”.

Mr. Barima admonished residents of the Twin City to “get involved in the exercise and clean their surroundings. Those who have shops around the Takoradi Market Circle will not be allowed to open their shops to the public because, all those areas will clean”.

A pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) group in the Western Region, Anagyi St. Francis Youth Wing, on Monday took to some streets of the Kwesimintsim Constituency in Takoradi, clearing weeds and desilting chocked gutters.

According to the group, this is how they chose to join the commemoration of the President’s 100 days in office, and also to drum home his achievement within this period.

“We believe his 100 days has sent a positive signal that Ghana is on the right path. He has all his ministers and deputy ministers of state in place, he has restored nursing and teacher trainee allowances, he has increased the military’s allowances from $31-$35, payment of NHIS will be coming next week and the free SHS will be coming this September, we believe and are convinced that so far so good”.

“This clean-up exercise is to recognize the feat he has achieved” Chairman of the St. Francis polling station, Sampson Buckman told news men.

Women and children of all ages in the youth wing, with support from the presiding member of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, Rt. Hon John Davis, Chairman of the NPP Kwesimintsim Constituency, Mr. Ransford Odame Fening, and some old women of the NPP in the constituency, started their exercise few minutes after 6 in the morning.

They cleared areas overgrown with weeds around the Anagyi Park, desilted gutters along the main Anagyi Effiakuma road, and removed blockade to allow free flow of waste water from nearby homes.

“This exercise is not going to be a 9-day wonder. As youth in the electoral area, we will in the coming days work on other streets, and when that is done, our next move will be to ensure that all street lights in the electoral area are fixed. This is our contribution towards getting Ghana to a better path”, spokesperson for the group, Kafui Yaw Robertson reiterated.

STMA Presiding Member, John Davis.

He expressed their belief in the Nana Addo administration to provide jobs “for the teeming youth in the constituency and around the country.”

Chairman of the Kwesimintsim Constituency, Ransford Odame Fening, commended the youth to continue with their initiative and implored others in other constituencies to emulate such moves “for together with the STMA we can make this constituency a cleaner and healthier place worth emulating.”

Zoomlion Ghana Limited and other members of the party provided the youth with gloves, mouth and nose masks and other items that could facilitate their work.
