A train station was built in just nine hours by 1,500 workers in China.

Organised with military precision, the project which reportedly took place over the weekend, was completed in the southern Fujian Province.

Seven trains and 23 diggers were used in the huge construction project at the Nanlong Railway Station in the south China city of Longyan, the Xianhua News Agency reported.

Workers were split into seven units to take on seven simultaneous tasks, according to Zhan Daosong, a deputy manager at China Tiesiju Civil Engineering Group, the communist country’s main railroad construction company.

The high-speed Nanlong Railway line is under construction and is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.

Around 152 miles long, it will provide a main transport link between the south-east of the country and central China.

The railway is designed to support trains travelling at speeds of up to 124 mph.

The project is one of series of impressive infrastructure projects completed by China in recent years.

Two years ago, the world’s largest radio telescope began searching for signals from stars and galaxies and, perhaps, extraterrestrial life in the remote Pingtang county in southwest China’s Guizhou province.

Measuring 500 metres in diameter, the radio telescope is nestled in a natural basin within a stunning landscape of lush green karst formations.

It took five years and $£129m to complete and surpasses that of the 300-meter Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, a dish used in research on stars that led to a Nobel Prize.

The country has also completed the Tianhuangping hydroelectric project, which is the biggest in Asia and plays a vital role in supplying power to eastern China and The Guangzhou Opera House, one of its three biggest theatres was opened in 2009.

The Takoradi District Court has adjourned the case involving a Chinese businessman, Jian Gen Hai, who shot and killed one Nana Boah, a 29-year old Ghanaian at Wassa Akropong in the Western Region, to December 17, 2017

The presiding Judge, Thomas K. Ofiedie, adjourned the case after the prosecution team pleaded with the court to give them additional time to gather enough evidence for effective prosecution.

Juan Gen Hai was remanded into police custody on his first appearance in court on Wednesday, October 11, after Police Inspector Bernard Paa Ahinsan, who represented the state, prayed for two weeks to gather enough evidence to assist the prosecution.

The killing of Nana Boah sparked riots in Wassa Akropong with angry youth setting ablaze properties belonging to Chinese nationals in the area.

The Paramount Chief of the Wassa Amenfi Traditional Area, Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II, had to intervene in the situation, and police had to relocate about 48 Chinese nationals to safety.

This was followed by the youth setting up checkpoints on the Wassa Akropong High street in search of Chinese nationals.

Meanwhile, counsel for the accused, Lawyer Adinkrah, is unhappy with delays on the part of the State in their evidence gathering.

He said the health of his client was deteriorating, and further asked the prosecution to conduct their investigation with speed.

He pleaded with the court to make an order for the accused to seek medical attention.

A Takoradi District court has remanded into police custody, the Chinese national who shot and killed Nana Boah, a 30-year old Ghanaian lotto operator, at Wassa Akropong in the Western Region.

Police Inspector Bernard Paa Ahinsan, who represented the state, prayed the court, presided over by His Worship, Thomas K. Ofidie, to remand the accused into police custody, to allow them some time to further investigate the case.

[contextly_sidebar id=”17Xav1dubauEVuzDgqkjPB44v6ZfXCCt”]Jiang Gen Hai, allegedly shot and killed Nana Boah, who had accompanied his friend, a plumber, to demand GHc150 as his workman’s pay for services he had rendered to the Chinese.

He’s believed to have been shot and killed instantly by the Chinese after an argument ensued over the refusal of the Chinese national to pay for the amount he had been charged by the plumber.

Initial reports had suggested that the Ghanaian was shot mistakenly, although that has also not been confirmed.

Eyewitnesses told Citi News that during the confrontation, a gun brought out by one of the Chinese was seized by the two Ghanaians but a second gun was reportedly fired by the Chinese, killing the witness, Nana Boamah instantly.

The youth of Wassa Akropong responded in anger by burning some 14 cars belonging to the Chinese nationals in the town, and also vandalizied other properties.

The suspect was arrested by the police and sent to the Asankragua Divisional Command. He was subsequently transferred to the Western Regional Police Command in Sekondi.

Police say he will be charged for murder, and he is to reappear in court on 26th October, 2017.

Crackdown on Chinese

The incident angered the youth of the town who burnt and vandalized properties belonging to the Chinese nationals.

About 14 cars belonging to the Chinese, as well as some of their shops, have been burnt by the irate youth.

Police had to relocate about 48 Chinese nationals to safety following the rioting.

Later on, angry youth also set up checkpoints on the Wassa Akropong High street in search of Chinese nationals following the killing, which heightened already existing tensions because of Chinese involvement in illegal mining.

Police in Wassa Amenfi in the Western Region, have transferred the case of the Chinese national and his accomplices, over the alleged shooting to death of a Ghanaian, Nana Boafo, to the Regional Police Command in Sekondi.

The District Police Commander for Wassa Amenfi East District, Superintendent Bright Boafo, who spoke to Citi News said even though the process for justice has begun, the command cannot guarantee the safety of the Chinese and their properties in the town.

[contextly_sidebar id=”brJOyqGe9BkIjTLizsx3Q5y4zfJX8H7d”]”We thought it wise not to keep them at the Wassa Akropong Police Station for fear that the youth may vandalize or demand a release for instant justice,”  he said.

Aside from this, Supt. Boafo said, “the regional commander came, he also directed that this matter should be investigated at the regional headquarters at Sekondi.”

Meanwhile, a group calling itself the Wassa Amenfi Youth Network for Development, has described the killing of Nana Boah as the culmination of a culture of intimidation, lawlessness of the Chinese in the area.

The group also said the Chinese in Wassa Amenfi abuse the freedom they enjoy, and also undermine the Ghanaian hospitality.

Frederick Korankye, the convener of the group, noted that attempts to foster cooperation  between the natives and the foreigners with the opening of the Wassa Amanfi Chapter of the Ghana-China Association was unsuccessful.

“However the unsuccessfulness of the process has partly contributed to the unguided and unregulated Chinese operations in our land,” he lamented.

“Most alarming is the use of weapons by Chinese to secure themselves and their existence here in our homeland,” Frederick Korankye added.

The anger in the area has seen other angry youth set up checkpoints on the Wassa Akropong High street in search of Chinese nationals following the killing last Friday.

The killing itself was met with riots on the day which resulted in about 14 cars belonging to the Chinese, as well as some of their shops being set ablaze by the youth.

About 48 Chinese nationals had to be relocated from the town to other areas for safety.

The story so far

Initial reports had suggested that the gun was accidentally fired by the Chinese killing the Ghanaian, during an altercation between two Chinese nationals at a Casino.

Eyewitnesses told Citi News that the incident was triggered when a plumber who was hired by some Chinese nationals to undertake some services called on the deceased, as a witness, after the Chinese refused to pay the GHc150 he charged.

During the confrontation, a gun brought out by one of the Chinese was seized by the two Ghanaians but a second gun was reportedly fired by the Chinese, killing the witness, Nana Boamah instantly.

The incident angered the youth of the town who burnt and vandalized properties belonging to the Chinese nationals.

The alleged accidental killing of a Ghanaian by a Chinese national at Wassa Akropong in the Wassa Amenfi East District, of the Western Region, has sparked riots in the town.

The Chinese national is said to have accidentally shot and killed the Ghanaian, whose identity is unknown for now.

Assets belonging to the Chinese are said to have been set ablaze by irate youth, who are protesting the death of the victim. About twelve cars are believed to have been burnt so far.

According to eyewitnesses, over eight vehicles belonging to the Chinese have already been set ablaze, whilst other properties are under attack.

Eyewitnesses also say a joint task-force of military and police officers have arrived at the scene trying to take control the situation.

Speaking to Citi News, a local reporter with Rivers FM at Wassa Akropong, narrated that at about 4:30 pm, today [Friday], residents got wind of a brawl between two Chinese at a casino in the town near a filling station.

In the course of the confusion, one of the Chinese allegedly fired a shot from the casino, killing instantly the Ghanaian who was fueling his car at a nearby fuel station.

“I saw the army and policemen, they are around here. But they could not stop what the youth in the town are doing now. They [the youth] are burning the houses around and their cars… the fire service came here but they didn’t get the chance to even quench the fire.”

The eyewitness also said the rioting youth were not allowing the overwhelmed security personnel to call for backup.

“I heard one military officer, but they are not allowing anybody to record or to take photos or to make calls. So the guys even warned a military man not to make any calls so they are just standing here. I can see only three military men and four policemen.”

Most of the Chinese nationals in the area allegedly engage in illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey.

The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Elizabeth Afoley Quaye, has stated that, the two Chinese nationals who are said to have imported unwholesome tilapia into the country, did so in contravention of the law.

According to her, there is a current ban on tilapia importation hence anybody found to have imported such product into Ghana breaches the law.

[contextly_sidebar id=”7ZC6k4o5vhl2slSBVYJyJKrgfAyswh8D”]The Ghana Police Service is currently on a manhunt for two Chinese nationals who are said to have imported unwholesome tilapia into the country.

According to the Police, they have a bench warrant to arrest Zhang Ming alias Gary and Chu Yong Shuai whose 1,310 cartons of tilapia according to the Foods and Drugs Authority were unwholesome.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, Afoley Quaye said “the law enforcement agencies have every right to look for such people and prosecute them because it is against our law.”

Ghana imports 60% of fish consumed

The Minister also said Ghana imports over 60% of its 950,000 metric tons of fish it consumes annually.

Afoley Quaye, who blamed the imports on the steady depletion of Ghana’s fish stock, said her outfit has put in place measures to arrest the situation.

“We have a deficit of over 60% of production of fish in Ghana. So we import over 600,000 metric tonnes of fish and we produce less than 400,000. At the moment we have our stocks depleting steadily, and we really have to do something quickly about it else we lose our stocks entirely,” she said.

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, John-Peter Amewu has warned foreign nationals still engaging in small scale mining in Ghana to desist from it with immediate effect or face his wrath.

According to him, such activities are against Ghana’s constitution adding that persons found culpable “would face the full rigors of the law.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”G43ybQgs9YLyuAq9kW3B3lMtt0LnsRZE”]“All Foreigners who are still involved in any activities that border on working in the small-scale mining sector should stop with immediate effect,” he added in a statement copied to citifmonline.com.

The statement also noted that despite several warnings against smuggling gold out of the country, the practice still persists.

Mr. Amewu said government is undertaking an exercise to weed out all who are infringing on mining law adding that no one will be spared if caught.

Several foreign nationals especially Chinese have been arrested in parts of the country for engaging in illegal mining also known as galamsey in Ghana.

Currently, a military team known as Operation Vanguard has been deployed to galamsey prevalent areas in the Eastern, Western and Ashanti Regions to clamp down on such acts.

Below is the full statement from the Minister:

ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES OF FOREIGNERS IN THE SMALL-SCALE MINING SECTOR

It has come to the attention of the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources that a number of foreigners are still undertaking activities in the small-scale mining sector.

Additionally, it has been noted that some gold is still being smuggled out of the country and being syphoned into money laundering

The Ministry would want all and sundry to take note that these activities are illegal and contrary to the laws of Ghana.

The Minister hereby therefore issues the following directives as part of the measures to stem these activities:

1.All Foreigners who are still involved in any activities that border on working in the small-scale mining sector should stop with immediate effect; and

2.All and sundry, whether holding a licence to deal in, export or tranship gold or not, are to desist from any transaction not expressly specified in any legitimate licence they hold.

Government is undertaking an exercise to weed out all who are infringing the laws in this respect. All who will be found culpable would face the full rigors of the law.

The Chinese government is set to deliver 4 patrol boats to the Ghana Navy by the end of this month, July 2017.

The Chinese have also pledged to provide military equipment to boost bilateral defense cooperation. This includes four vehicles mounted with machine guns, and a 120,000-round of amour.

[contextly_sidebar id=”PLmBLZktNq1WXoHsVwZRcAuRFvDuBese”]This was announced by Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, who told Citi News that the patrol boats will help Ghana efficiently guard its coastline.

“The biggest problem with us is that, the navy is down with boats so our coastline is not as rigorously guarded as we have wished especially the eastern sides. So we appealed to them and they decided to help us with boats. So they decided to fulfill that promise. When the Vice President went there, he reminded them about it. By this month, the patrol boats will be here and then they will be sending six people to train our navy on the usage of the patrol boats.”

The Chinese government has been heavily criticized by Ghanaians for supporting some government institutions in the country.

The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana in June 2017, presented GHc 10,000 and some office equipment to the Attorney General’s office, to support an event.

Some Chinese businessmen also donated the sum of GHc50, 000 to the Ghana Police service

Some Ghanaians claimed that the donations were a subtle by the Chinese to influence the Ghana government’s fight against illegal mining which some Chinese were heavily engaged in.
