The sixth and final brand-new Hyundai Accent saloon car in the Coral Paints ‘Paint Your Dream Into Reality’ promotion, has been handed over to a 36-year old electrical engineer, Francis Karikari Owusu.

Coral Paints started the promotion in April 2017, and ended in October, giving away five brand-new cars to different winners after they found the dummy key in the Coralatex 18L pails.

[contextly_sidebar id=”X0edVzNPlMrz9FkteJ9FK0RCwcHEimf9″]Mr. Owusu received the keys to the sixth and last car from the General Manager of Coral Paints Ghana, Yaw Bonnah-Sarpong, at the Coral Colour Centre in Accra on Thursday.

Presenting the keys to the Electrical Engineer, Mr. Bonnah-Sarpong expressed appreciation to all the previous winners, and said Coral Paints will continue to create innovative activities to reward their numerous clients for their support over the years.

Receiving the keys to the brand-new Hyundai Accent car, Mr. Karikari Owusu thanked Coral Paints for making his dream come into reality, after pestering his boss to get him a car.

Narrating how he won the car, he said his boss bought four of the Coralatex 18L pails to repaint his office, but upon reaching the office, his boss asked him to unpack the paints in order for the painters to start work.

According to him, “it was upon seeing the receipts of the paints that I realized Coral Paints was running a promotion, hence I decided to open the paint buckets myself to see if I will find the dummy key.”

Francis Karikari Owusu left receiving the car key from Yaw Boamah Sarpong, General Manager of Coral Paints

After opening the second bucket of paint, Mr. Karikari saw the dummy key and quickly called his boss to inform him about it.

“Fortunately for me, my boss asked me to take it because I found the dummy key,” he noted.

He sent the dummy key to the Coral office where he was asked to present the receipt of purchase, and the dummy key, which he did, and that was confirmed the sixth and last winner of the six cars.

The ‘Paint Your Dream Into Reality’, is the company’s third promotion campaign.

In the first promotion in 1995, the winner received a brand new house.

In the second promotion, Coral Ghana sponsored some customers on an all-expense paid trip to Brazil to watch the national football team, the Black Stars at the FIFA World Cup in 2014.

A Catholic bishop in the Central African Republic (CAR) has given refuge to 2,000 Muslims who are living in fear of attacks from a mainly Christian militia.

Juan José Aguirre Munoz says that the refugees cannot leave the seminary’s compound in the south-eastern city of Bangassou.

He told the BBC that the refugees “risk death” from anti-balaka militias.

The UN’s humanitarian chief warned last week of possible genocide.

Stephen O’Brien said that violence in CAR was escalating and the situation was becoming dire.

“Violence is intensifying, risking a repeat of the devastating destructive crisis that gripped the country four years ago,” he said.

Mr O’Brien added: “The early warning signs of genocide are there. We must act now.”

CAR has experienced sectarian violence since 2013, when the largely Muslim Seleka rebels seized power, and were accused of killing non-Muslim civilians.

The anti-balaka “self-defence” groups were then formed but have also been accused of atrocities.

Balaka is a street name which means bullets and the militia’s name therefore translates to “those who stop bullets”. Seleka, on the other hand, means “coalition” in the widely-spoken Sango language.

According to the UN, thousands have been killed and at least a million people have been displaced in CAR since 2013.

It also says that at least half of the population is dependent on humanitarian aid.

A tenuous peace deal signed in June saw 13 out of 14 armed groups operating in the country agree with the government to end fighting in exchange for political representation and the integration of armed militias into the military.

Bishop Munoz says that the refugees sought help at the seminary after fighting broke out in May, and have since been under the care of the church and aid organisations.

“Nearby, there are anti-Balaka militias who prevent them from going out to search for food, water or firewood,” he said. “So they are completely confined inside the seminary. They would risk death if they venture out,” he told the BBC’s Newsday programme.

Protecting the vulnerable

A 10-year-old boy who was caught up in the violent clashes told a Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) aid worker that he was shot at.

“People fired shots. One of my brothers received a bullet in his heart. Another brother got a bullet in his chest. I also received one in my testicle,” he said.

A doctor with MSF, Ernest Lualuali Ibongu, told the BBC that there are other people in the seminary who need medical care but who cannot leave the compound to get to a hospital.

Bishop Munoz said that the refugees needed to be relocated because many aid organisations have stopped working in the area.

He said that attempts to appeal to the militia to allow aid workers in had failed.

“The anti-Balaka are armed and very violent and capable of killing children,” he said. “It is very difficult to reason with [them].”

He says that both anti-Balaka and Seleka militias have attacked the church’s properties, but adds that it is determined to protect vulnerable people from both sides.

“For us, there’s no such thing as a Muslim person or a Christian person, everyone is a human being. We need to protect those who are vulnerable.”

The three-month long loyalty reward package of retail shopping giant West Hills Mall, dubbed ‘Cruise down to West Hills Mall’ ended on July 1, 2017.

The promotion saw over 50,000 entries, but 65 of them made it to the finals. A Junior High School student, Lorena Leber, walked away with the ultimate prize, a brand new Chevrolet Cruise Saloon car.

Other finalists also walked away with consolation prizes worth thousands of Ghana Cedis.

The ‘Cruise down to West Hills Mall’ promotion, also gave customers who shopped to the tune of Ghc200 or more, incredible instant prizes, including thousands high value items like LED TV sets, blenders, microwaves and smart phones.

Board Chairman of the West Hills Mall, Kofi Sekyere, who explained the rationale behind the promotion, said, “We are really happy that shoppers have chosen the West Hills Mall as their shopping destination. This competition has been running for three months. We had close to 50,000 people participating, and out of that 65 got to the final. The draw is essentially to bring customers to shop and introduce the facility to them; and everybody who participated won something.”

Mr. Sekyere added that, the draw was also to increase the foot count and expenditure.

He said the company has run several promotions as it prepared to celebrate three years of its operations in Ghana in October 2017.

“In October this year West Hills Mall will be three years since it opened in Ghana, so about two and half years, in May 2015, we run a scratch and win promotion, and we handed the winner a Kia Rio. In November 2016, ‘Shop N Win’ promotion, we handed over a Chevrolet Sparkle, and this year, Chevrolet Cruise; so it is going to be an annual event” he noted.

Twenty-five people have been killed in two days of violence in the Central African Republic, the UN peacekeeping mission has said.

On Thursday, 15 people died in clashes between Muslim fighters of the former Seleka militia and the Christian vigilante anti-Balaka group, it said.

Six police officers and four civilians died in an ambush on Friday.

The Central African Republic has been wracked by conflict along religious and ethnic lines since 2013.

map

In a statement on Saturday, the Minusca mission said “clashes between elements of the anti-Balaka and ex-Seleka caused 15 deaths and a number of wounded” in the town of Bambari, about 250km (150 miles) north-east of the capital Bangui.

It added that “six gendarmes and four civilians lost their lives on Friday morning in an ambush on the Bambari-Grimari road”.

The UN mission urged all armed groups to end “the cycle of attack and reprisal”.

Seleka rebels briefly seized power in March 2013 and deposed the Christian President Francois Bozize.

The Seleka group was itself then ousted, leading to a wave of violent reprisals against the Muslim population by the Christian anti-Balaka militia.

Thousands of people have been killed and hundreds of thousands displaced in the CAR since 2013.

More than 12,000 UN peacekeepers are deployed in the country.

Electric carmaker Tesla says all cars it now builds will have hardware needed to drive completely on their own.

But despite the cameras, sensors and radars being introduced, it is still expected to be years before the vehicles become fully self-driving.

Tesla introduced its Autopilot system last year, allowing some self-drive functions such as auto-braking.

But it is now temporarily disabling Autopilot on all new cars to allow “robust” testing with the new systems.

Gathering data

Tesla founder Elon Musk said its hardware was “basically a super-computer in a car,” but added it would be up to regulators and the public to decide when self-driving vehicles could actually be used on the roads.

He said it made sense to build in the self-driving tech now – even if it cannot be used for some time – because trying to retrofit the hardware at a later stage would cost consumers more than buying a new vehicle.

For now, the hardware will run in “shadow mode”, gathering information on when the technology may have caused or avoided accidents had it been in command of the vehicle.

Mr Musk said he hoped that Tesla could one day show regulators significant data which demonstrated the self-driving technology was safer than having humans behind the wheel.

Google and pretty much everyone else in this game has the necessary sensor technology at the ready, but the research and development task in making the computer smart enough to intelligently work out what is going on around it. That’s what’s holding self-driving technology back right now.

What Tesla will gain by doing this, however, is a huge fleet of cars gathering data on the world’s roads, something which could hasten the introduction of self-driving technology.

It’s an announcement that seems more designed to keep up investor confidence that Tesla is still worth backing despite missing sales and revenue targets over the past year. He’d promised they’d be comfortably making a profit by now, but he certainly hasn’t managed that.

Press attack

Tesla has an Autopilot feature in its Model S and Model X vehicles, allowing them to automatically change lanes and keep up with traffic.

But it suffered a setback in May when a man was killed driving a Tesla Model S while using the Autopilot function. A preliminary US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report into the incident said the driver had been speeding moments before he collided with a lorry.

Elon Musk

Mr Musk was critical of press coverage of this and other related Autopilot accidents, saying there had been a “paucity of media coverage of the 1.2 million people that die every year in manual crashes”.

He claimed that publishing such negative stories risked dissuading people from using autonomous car tech, which would result in deaths.

To underline the point, he retweeted an account of how Autopilot had prevented a Tesla Model X rear-ending another car.

But one expert said it was right that critical articles be published.

“It’s a revolutionary technology, so it’s inevitable that it will attract a lot of attention,” said Prof David Bailey from Aston Business School.

“If it was positive attention he wouldn’t be complaining. But the point is that the press will pick up on things that go wrong, and things will go wrong.

“This technology will radically change the way we get around our cities, and as it’s introduced it’s absolutely right that it be scrutinised both by policy makers and the media.”

New customers

In its last set of financial results, Tesla said it had missed production targets, saw sales below expectations and reported its thirteenth consecutive quarterly loss.

In April, Tesla unveiled plans for its Model 3 vehicle, its lowest-cost to date, due for release next year. It has been reported that so far 400,000 have been pre-ordered. That vehicle will now also include the new hardware.

The basic model will start at $35,000 (£28,500) and have a range of at least 215 miles (346km) per charge. Analysts say the price and range of the five-seater should make the vehicle appeal to new types of customers and could boost interest in other electric vehicles.

The firm faces competition from other similarly priced electric cars that will become available first, including General Motors’ Chevy Bolt and BYD’s Qin EV300.

A North Korean court has sentenced an American man to six years of hard labour for “hostile acts”, the state-run KCNA news agency has said.

Matthew Miller was arrested in April, shortly after arriving in the country as a tourist.

The authorities have not specified the exact charges, but said he tore up his visa and demanded political asylum.

The US accuses North Korea of using Mr Miller and two other detained Americans as pawns in a diplomatic game.

Jeffrey Fowle came to North Korea as a tourist but was arrested in May for allegedly leaving a Bible in a public place. North Korea considers the distribution or spreading of Christian information as incendiary.

Korean-American missionary Kenneth Bae, who was arrested in November 2012, is serving 15 years in a labour camp after being convicted of trying to overthrow North Korea’s government.

The White House has described securing the release of the three American citizens as a “top priority”.

In the past the US has been able to negotiate the release of American detainees in North Korea.

Notably two journalists who were held whilst filming a documentary in North Korea were granted a “special pardon” after former President Clinton travelled to the country.

The US has offered several times to send Robert King, its special envoy for North Korean human rights issues, to Pyongyang to discuss the detainees, but these visits have been cancelled by North Korea.

North Korean ‘shelter’

Mr Miller, 24, of Bakersfield in California, had been in custody since 10 April.

Little information has been released about him, and the US State Department said this was partly because he had not signed a Privacy Act Waiver, which allows information about him to be released to the public.

According to KCNA, Mr Miller tore up his tourist visa on arrival in the country and shouted that “he came to the DPRK [North Korea] after choosing it as a shelter.”

In a brief interview with CNN earlier this month, attended by North Korean officials, Mr Miller said: “I will say that I prepared to violate the law of the DPRK before coming here.

He also said he deliberately committed his “crime”, although he did not specify what he had done wrong.

Accordingly, much mystery remains, says the BBC’s Seoul correspondent Steve Evans.

In a recent interview with Associated Press news agency in Pyongyang, all three American detainees appealed to the US government to send a high-ranking representative to negotiate about their freedom.

State department official Daniel Russel told Reuters last week that the US found North Korean treatment of its citizens “objectionable and distressing”.

“This is the way that they play,” he said. “They use human beings, and in this case Americans citizens, as pawns.”

North Korea’s communist dictator Kim Jong-un has always been a Red…

And now the 31-year-old Manchester United fan is making sure the rest of his country can also watch their games.

He has ordered state TV to broadcast the matches, which observers claim are being illegally streamed.

Other changes to the normally staid TV schedules include the introduction of shows on how to ride a horse, how to play golf, and, from Germany’s Bundesliga, even more football.

But after Louis van Gaal’s Reds had an awful start to the Premier League and lost 4-0 to MK Dons, there could be calls to ban the games.

Surely the people of North Korea have suffered enough…

North Korea has promised “merciless” retaliation if a forthcoming Hollywood movie about killing Kim Jong-un is released, say agencies.

A North Korean foreign ministry spokesman said in state media that the movie’s release would be an “act of war”.

He did not mention the title, but a Hollywood movie called The Interview with a similar plot is due in October.

Hollywood actors James Franco and Seth Rogen star in the action-comedy film.

Rogen, who is also one of the directors of The Interview, has since responded on Twitter saying: “People don’t usually wanna kill me for one of my movies until after they’ve paid 12 bucks for it.”

Franco and Rogen play a talkshow host and his producer who are invited to interview Kim Jong-un, and are subsequently recruited by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to assassinate the leader.

The film’s teaser trailer, posted on Youtube, shows a lookalike actor playing Kim Jong-un, as well as fight scenes involving what appear to be North Korean tanks and helicopters, and a nuclear missile launch.

The North Korea spokesman was quoted by the state KCNA news agency as saying: “Making and releasing a movie on a plot to hurt our top-level leadership is the most blatant act of terrorism and war and will absolutely not be tolerated.”

He added that the “reckless US provocative insanity” of mobilising a “gangster filmmaker” to challenge the North’s leadership was triggering “a gust of hatred and rage” among North Korean people and soldiers.

“If the US administration allows and defends the showing of the film, a merciless counter-measure will be taken,” the spokesman was quoted as saying.

Writer and actor James Franco attends the premiere of Tribeca Film's 'Palo Alto' at the Directors Guild of America on 5 May 2014 in Los Angeles, California.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un gives field guidance to the remodelling site of the May Day Stadium in this undated photo released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency in Pyongyang on 20 June 2014.
Kim Jong-un took power after his father Kim Jong-il died in 2011, which prompted a change in the film’s script

Apparent evidence emerged last week supporting claims that North Korea is further developing its missile technology. Some experts said they had identified a new anti-ship cruise missile shown in a North Korean propaganda film. Other observers were more sceptical.

North Korea is holding three Americans in custody. The latest to be detained is said to be a tourist named Jeffrey Edward Fowle who reportedly left a Bible at a hotel.

Rogen recently said he was inspired by journalists’ trips to North Korea.

He told Yahoo: “People have the hypothetical discussion about how journalists have access to the world’s most dangerous people, and they hypothetically would be in a good situation to assassinate them.”

He added that the film was originally about meeting Kim Jong-il, but they had to revise the script when he died in 2011 and his son Kim Jong-un took power.
