The Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress [NDC], Koku Anyidoho, has been invited by the Criminal Investigations Department [CID], for making what has been described as treasonable comments.

He was picked up at the International Press Centre in Accra today [ Tuesday] during a press conference by a group of opposition political parties known as the Inter-Party Coalition for National Sovereignty, who are kicking against the Ghana-US Defence Cooperation agreement ratified by Parliament last Friday.

The group comprises the People’s National Convention [PNC], the National Democratic Congress [NDC], the Convention People’s Party [CPP], the Progressive People’s Party [PPP],  and the All People’s Congress [APC].

The press conference was attended by a number of the parties’ top officials including NDC’s General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia, Hassan Ayariga of the APC and Bernard Mornah, PNC Chairman, who condemned the invasion of the press conference to arrest Mr. Ayidoho, saying it was an attempt to silence them and a threat to freedom of speech.

[contextly_sidebar id=”7hvqSDdRVhTRBixWuS5yE3u3RSg1Qw0F”]Mr. Anyidoho in an interview on Accra-based Happy FM, indicated that President Akufo-Addo will be overthrown just like his father and the late Dr. K. A Busia due to the ratification of the controversial defence cooperation agreement between the US and the government of Ghana.

“Somebody should tell Nana Addo that history has a very interesting way of repeating itself. On the 13th of January 1972, a certain Colonel Ignatius Kutu Acheampong led an insurrection that removed the progress party from power. Busia was the Prime Minister and Akufo Addo’s father was the ceremonial President. Someone should tell Akufo-Addo that history has an interesting way of repeating itself,” Anyidoho warned.

When he was asked by the Host to clarify his statement , Koku Anyidoho maintained that “history has an interesting way of repeating itself.”

“There will be a civilian coup d’état. There will be a social revolution. We [NDC] are starting it on Wednesday. The movement is starting on Wednesday. Nana Addo will have sleepless nights. He will suffer diarrhea. He said he wanted to be president, but we will make sure he will be fed up on the seat,’’ he noted further.

Anyidoho should be questioned for ‘treasonable comments’ – Hamid

Government had said on Tuesday that it expects the country’s security agencies to interrogate Mr. Anyidoho for making what it considers treasonable comments.

Speaking to Citi News, the Minister for Information, Mustapha Hamid, condemned Koku Anyidoho’s comments saying “Our [government’s] immediate reaction is utter condemnation of the comments by Koku Anyidoho. We condemn it in the very strongest of terms. When people make treasonable comments, when people allude to the fact that they intend to overthrow a government, it will be important for the security agencies to have a chat with him and to find out how he intends to do that.”

He indicated that, although the NDC has subsequently dissociated itself from Mr. Anyidoho’s comments, it has to take a firmer stance by strongly condemning same.

“Our attention has been drawn to the fact that the General Secretary of the NDC says the party disassociates itself from Koku Anyidoho’s comments, but we think that merely disassociating the NDC from that comment is not enough. We think that the NDC should condemn this in the strongest possible terms.”

The National Democratic Congress [NDC], has stated its opposition to the Ghana-US Defence Cooperation agreement, after its members in Parliament, staged a walkout during the approval.

Minority to join demo against ‘US military base’ agreement

The Minority in Parliament has already served notice that on Wednesday, it will join some Ghanaians in Accra to demonstrate against the recently ratified Ghana-US Defence Cooperation agreement.

In a statement copied to citifmonline.com, the caucus described the agreement as a betrayal of the Ghanaian people by the Akufo-Addo government.

The Ranking Member of the Communications Committee and Member of Parliament for Sagnarigu constituency, Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, who signed the statement, said they have taken a decision to “unanimously and without reservation resolved to support and join Ghanaians who will be demonstrating tomorrow [Wednesday].

A clinical psychologist at the School of Medical Sciences of the University of Cape Coast, Christian Ackom, has criticised the Police following the arrest of a resident of Assin Kwaata, Joseph Acquah, 38, who had threatened to take his own life over his wife’s refusal to have sex with him for three months.

Joseph Acquah was detained after his wife reported his intentions to commit suicide to the police.

The Police Commander told journalists after Mr. Acquah’s arrest that he would be put before the courts since suicide was against the law.

However, speaking to Citi News, Christian Ackom said Joseph Acquah needs professional attention from psychiatrists and would not be helped by being incarcerated.

“This idea of punishing people for attempting to commit suicide is misplaced. The thing is the law is very old and we have been advocating for it to be repealed. The man threatened, it could have been an issue of him being frustrated and it was all a cry for help because according to the story I read, for past three months his wife had denied him sex, ” he said.

According to him, the man’s threat to commit suicide could have been an attempt to get his wife to change her mind.

He argued that the police should have at least considered that possibility and referred the case to a mental facility.

“The issue of suicide is a bit more complex than we think. If the police become trigger-happy and want to rush everybody who have threaten suicide to court to be punished than I think it is not right, because you will not punish someone for having a heart attack and suicide is a mental health condition,” he said.

The two, Kwame Asare 24, alias ‘Boys Abr3’ and Kofi Yakubu, 23, who had been on Police wanted list for sometime, were arrested at Suhum.

According to the Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, the two belong to a car snatching syndicate that has been masterminding the recent wave of robberies and carjacking activities in the region.

“Suspect Kwame Asare led police to Amenase and Asuboi near Suhum for the arrest of one other accomplice by name Sammy alias Oscar, but he was absent. Suspect Eric Twumasi, 19 years, Emmanuel Tengey 16 years and Ansong Tawiah 15 years, were found in the room of suspect Sammy and when a search was conducted in the room, a stethoscope and one sphygmomanometer were retrieved. Police proceeded and conducted a search in the room of Kwame Asare but found nothing incriminating”.

ASP Ebenezer Tetteh advised the general public to help the law enforcement agencies with credible and timely information to enable them clamp down on criminals.

“I will therefore use this medium to plead with residents to report to the police strange movements and activities of people we live with in our neighbourhoods, because for all you know, they may be part of a robbery group. The police thrives on information from you the general public to work so help us with the necessary and vital information so we ensure sanity in the region,” he said.

The three soldiers arrested by some residents of Tarkwa in the Western Region for allegedly extorting monies from them, are not members of government’s Operation Vanguard Task-force, according to the Ghana Armed Forces.

The Director of Public Relations of the Armed Forces, Lt. Colonel Eric Aggrey Quarshie, who  said this, explained  that, the three were rather “men from the Air-force base in Takoradi.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”7HUifSi0caVR7MDeqxh1mJHYzIaJElLG”]The three, namely; AC2 Oliviete Solomon with service No.207333, AC2 Agantwuo Agana, No. 207323, and Joseph Osei Abraham, No. 207356 AC2, were handed over to the Tarkwa Divisional Police Command, by residents who arrested them.

The soldiers on board a taxicab on Saturday evening, are said to have gone to Aboso, a mining community in the Tarkwa-Nsauem Municipality, and combed around gold buying shops, where they extorted both cash and gold from unsuspecting dealers.

Members of the Aboso community, who were suspicious of the operations of the soldiers, raised an alarm, mobilized and arrested them.

The soldiers were taken to the Aboso Police Station and later handed over to the Tarkwa Divisional Police Command.

Reports from Tarkwa had suggested that, the soldiers admitted the offence upon interrogation by their senior officers from the Operation Vanguard task-force, which is on a national assignment to help government root out illegal mining also known as galamsey.

Lt. Colonel Quarshie indicated that, military authorities are lasing with the Police in the area to get to the bottom of the matter.

He said the three will be sanctioned if it comes to the fore that “they have contravened the regulations.”

Tiger Woods has been sentenced to a year’s probation after pleading guilty to reckless driving.

The professional golfer was arrested in May after officers found him slumped at the wheel of his parked Mercedes-Benz not far from his Florida home.

A toxicology report found Woods had several legal medications in his system and marijuana’s active ingredient.

The 41-year-old golfer, who has 14 major men’s golf titles, has not won a major championship since 2008.

As part of Friday’s plea bargain, he is required to attend a drug treatment programme and undergo drug testing.

Woods has already completed 50 hours of community service as part of the programme, said a state prosecutor.

If he completes the programme, the reckless driving charge will be wiped from his record, said Florida Circuit Judge Sandra Bosso-Pardo during his court hearing.

“This particular plea agreement has no jail time,” Judge Bosso-Pardo noted during the sentencing.

“However, if you violate your probation in any significant way, I could revoke your probation and sentence you to jail for 90 days.”

“Is that understood?” she asked.

Woods replied: “Yes.”

Police dashcam footage of Woods’ 29 May arrest showed the golfer swaying and slurring his words as he interacted with officers near his home in Jupiter, Florida.

He later insisted that alcohol was not a factor, which the toxicology test showed to be true.

He claimed his disorientated condition was caused by an unexpected reaction to the combination of medications he was taking, following surgery on his back.

In 2009 Woods was involved in a bizarre car crash outside his Orlando home.

The incident sparked accusations of extramarital affairs which led to the end of his seven-year marriage and the loss of lucrative sponsorship deals.

“This morning, the Assembly man in Diaso electoral area reported at the station that around 6.15, he had a message that a male adult aged about 46, had been found dead at the outskirts of Modaso, another village about 6 kilometres from Diaso so the Police went to the place. Speaking to Citi News, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Prisons Service ,Vitalis Ayeh, said the suspects will be released to the Police if officials at Nsawam Prisons receive the final clearance document from the court.

“The process from the Court is that, if somebody is discharged, they should come to the prisons and pick their properties, and again they should come with a discharge warrant from a court of competent jurisdiction directing the prison authorities to release them from prison custody. As at Monday, when they returned, the discharge warrant had not come. We are waiting for it … We understand it is on its way coming. As soon as we get it and we are satisfied that it is coming from a court of competent jurisdiction, we release them to go.”
