A marketing consultant, Kweku Twum Barima says government’s policies on local farms particularly the poultry industry is the cause of the collapse of the industry.
He indicated that there were renowned and giant poultry producers such as Kwabena Darko Farms popularly known as Akoko Darko, Asare Farms, and Edwira Farms but policies of government which directly or indirectly affected them have seen their collapse.
Speaking to Citi News, Mr. Twum Barima said the collapse of these farms have given rise to the importation of frozen chicken to the tune of 230 million cedis annually.
Ghana now accounts for as much as 30 percent of all poultry products imported into West Africa sub region from the European Union.
These imports of live birds, frozen chicken parts and full chicken are posing serious threats to the local poultry industry.
According to a report in 2005, 50,000 tonnes of chicken was imported into the country.
