President Mahama has said his government has made “moderate gains” in the educational sector.

Speaking during the State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Thursday, President Mahama said government’s feat chalked in the educational sector is evident in the 2012 results of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination(WASSCE).

[contextly_sidebar id=”LYqLTqz8aGeBmXQFBe2sNlJmEsgEjmuM”]“Between 2006 when WASSCE began and 2014, the best performance index on students who attained grade AI to C6 was attained in the year 2012.”

The President said government’s “resolve to expand access, improve quality and to ensure affordability was accentuated when the results of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination was analysed.”

Out of the 242,162 candidates who sat for the May/June 2014 WASSCE, 7,442, representing 3.07 per cent, failed in all the subjects they wrote.

President Mahama however  expressed his commitment to working harder to ensure the results of students are improved in subsequent years.

Mahama also said work on the main campus of the University of Allied Science at Ho in the Volta Region is almost complete, adding that the University has admitted its first batch of medical students.

In line with government’s policy of establishing a public university in each region, the President said government has presented to Parliament a bill for the establishment of the University of Environment in the Eastern Region.
