The Country Director for the Young Educators Foundation Eugenia Tachie-Menson has advised government to implement more co-curricular programmes to improve literacy among students at the basic level.
This according to her will complement the efforts of guardians in educating their wards.
[contextly_sidebar id=”6pVzf0AI3u4lOrJrahU2BssIOz2IQzmP”]Speaking to Citi News after the finals of the 2015 Spelling Bee competition held in Accra Eugenia Tachie Menson stated that co-curricular activities facilitates the training of students.
“To be completely educated you need to combine co-curricular activities with academic work. We need to change our mentality and attitude towards co curricular activities,” she stated.
According to Eugenia Tachie Menson, learning should not be limited to the classroom and called on government to encourage the learning of co curricular activities.
Speaking on the challenges in running the Spelling Bee competition in Ghana, Eugenia Tachie Menson said some parents have not accepted the activity adding that “because it is not seen as academic, both parents and educators do not want the program to run”.
She also added that the lack of reading among Ghanaians had affected the ability of children to spell certain words.
The finals of the 2015 Spelling Bee competition saw Vishal Mukesh Thakwani of the Delhi Public School International emerge as winner of the competition.
