Uche Nwosu, lawyer for the eight suspected pirates who allegedly seized a Nigerian vessel carrying oil, has said he is being denied access to his clients by the police.

[contextly_sidebar id=”5Bjm4MFR15mLYaN1LpR3U1brWoMpmXLW”]Addressing the court on Wednesday, Mr. Nwosu said he has not been granted access to his clients since their last appearance in court a fortnight ago and therefore sort a court order to compel the police to grant him access.

He further told the court that the fundamental rights of his clients were being breached.

Earlier, the Accra Magistrate Court remanded the eight suspected pirates in police custody pending further investigations.

The Eastern Naval Command in Tema arrested the eight Nigerian suspected pirates few weeks ago for hijacking an oil vessel in Nigeria.

Ghanaian Security Services say the pirates managed to transfer the ship’s cargo into another vessel before their arrest.

The vessel, MV Mariam, was carrying about 1,500 tonnes of crude oil at the time it was hijacked.

The pirates reportedly turned the vessel around and entered the territorial waters of Ghana but were arrested upon a tip off.

The eight have been charged with conspiracy to commit crime and piracy.
