The Ashanti Regional Police have arrested five young lads aged between 16 to 18 years for allegedly selling fake mobile phones to unsuspecting people.

He said the police’ SWAT unit after a tip-off arrested the suspects; Owusu Ansah, 16 years, Prince Aprakwa aka Abe, 17, Kwadwo Antwi, 17, Stephen Adarkwa, 16 and Yaw Mensah, 19, on February 2, 2015 at Kejetia.
He said the young boys usually “lure unsuspecting buyers with a genuine mobile phone at a reduced price and after bargaining, they smartly and wittingly swap the genuine mobile phone with a fake one.”
He added that the fake phone which looks like a Samsung branded phone case are usually filled with soap and carefully carved stones.
DSP Abdullai noted that after selling the fake phones to the buyers the suspects relocate to another point making it difficult to trace their whereabouts.
Majority of their victims in the Kumasi metropolis according to the police are usually travelers.
The Police further assured that the ring leaders and manufactures of those fake phones are being monitored and they would be apprehended to face the law.
DSP Abdullai further advised the public to be extra vigilant and mindful of what and where they buy.
