Lawyers for the founder of the Countryside Children’s Home in Bawjiase have filed a writ of Habeas Corpus, praying the court to order the Police to produce the woman and other officials of the facility before the court.
Five workers including the founder of the Orphanage were arrested on the orders of the Inspector General of Police Mohammed Alhassan following human right abuses at the facility.
[contextly_sidebar id=”FB5zl4zDwiSl2WsxWBWmC9FhHrrJ3iIS”]Those arrested include the founder of the orphanage, Mrs Emma Boafo Yeboah, a supposed medical officer at the home, ‘Dr’ Isaac Nsiebi.
The others are a young woman who serves as a nurse at the school clinic, the administrator, identified only as Osei, and the accountant, also identified only as Justice.
An exposé by Investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas revealed that children were being maltreated at the orphanage in Bawjiase.
The arrested persons, according to the affidavit have been accused of stealing supplies donated to the occupants of the home.
The affidavit filed by Dr. Kweku Nsiah, lawyer for the applicants asked the court to “share cause why they should not be released either conditionally or unconditionally.”
In a related development, the Ministry for Gender, Children and Social Protection has temporarily shut down the orphanage home.
A total of 41 orphans were removed by the Department of Social Welfare and the Police CID.
The details of these affected orphans are also being analyzed.
