Zimbabwe’s President, Robert Mugabe has been appointed as Chairman of the African Union (AU).
[contextly_sidebar id=”Q9zMIyguHrOwhFbH3EBYFhok3sFqe1hW”]The 90-year- old is expected to replace Mauritania’s Mohammed Ould Abdel Aziz in the role, which rotates between Africa’s five regions.
The veteran leader reportedly took over the post on Friday.
Mugabe who is Africa’s third longest serving leader is regarded as one of the reputable leaders in the African continent.
He is however subject to travel bans from both the United States and European Union who believe his actions are intimidating.
Reuters reported that in Mugabe’s acceptance speech, he emphasized the need to guard against foreigners exploiting the continent’s mineral wealth and called for more assistance for African farmers.
“African resources should belong to Africa and to no one else, except to those we invite as friends. Friends we shall have, yes, but imperialists and colonialists no more.”
Mugabe was earlier given a rare invitation to an EU-Africa summit in Brussels but boycotted it after his wife was refused a visa.
