Minister of Energy, Emmanuel Kofi Armah Buah has reiterated government’s commitment to making the country the power hub of Africa.
[contextly_sidebar id=”MjHnVABwUfYkubmllO2bRg1kW3xvFpra”]He said this was evident in the number of interventions being undertaken by government to end the energy crisis and expand the generation capacity.
His comment follows the signing of a $7 billion agreement between Ghana government and Italian oil giant, ENI, for the production of about 180 million cubic feet of gas at Ghana’s Cape Three Point.
Gas from the project will used to produce additional 1,100 megawatts of power to supplement Ghana’s power sector.
Government has been struggling to resolve the energy crisis which has worsened in recent times forcing the Electricity Company of Ghana to implement a load-shedding exercise.
Government will on Wednesday sign another agreement with the GE of the USA to help provide additional 1,000 megawatts of power for Ghana.
According to the Minister of Energy, “Ghana is busily moving closer to become indeed the hub of power production in the African sub region and I believe the things that his Excellency President Mahama is doing will really get us there.”
Though he conceded that “We might be suffering today and it is really uncomfortable, [and] destroying businesses” he said “I believe that the people of Ghana can have the hope that the foundation that is being laid will ultimately help address our power challenges.”
On the ENI gas infrastructure, Mr Buah said “It promises to be one of the biggest investment
in the country” adding that “There is some certainty about this project coming forward.”
