Airtel launches free Facebook service

Telecom operator, Airtel Ghana, has partnered with Facebook to give free basic internet services for education, health, jobs and communication.

[contextly_sidebar id=”9hYWFA2FLxo3tTXVla6XJIFMeRPEY1hr”]The service known as Free Facebook on Airtel   allows customers with or without airtime to browse for free on Facebook without attracting any charges.

Head of Corporate Communications at Airtel Ghana, Donald Gwira told Citi Business News, the new service will among other things, benefits internet penetration in the country.

‘’This is one of the first of its kind because we are doing it directly with Facebook and it’s about giving access to subscribers to Facebook and internet.org.”

He further added that no subscription was needed to enjoy this service.

“Once you have an Airtel SIM card, you should be able to access it automatically however normal rates will apply to voice and video calls on Facebook,” Donald Gwira told Citi Business News.

So far, Ghana is the fifth country Facebook has connected through Internet.org — after Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya and Colombia. Chief Executive Officer of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg in a statement said by connecting all Airtel subscribers, they will unlock even more opportunities for Ghana

Subscribers can take advantage of the service by logging on to internet.org or downloading the app from Google play.
