The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has banned the sale of animals in unapproved market places.

This forms part of measures outlined by the AMA to curb the persistent fire outbreaks in markets within the Metropolis.

[contextly_sidebar id=”CVd5sGhzV1zuqi7LNrbNfVwFPd7Fy35o”]This was revealed by the Mayor at a joint press conference organized by the Metropolitan authorities and the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to address the recent fire outbreaks in metropolis.

The Mayor, Alfred Oko Vanderpuye said the ban is to ensure that animals are sold at the approved markets to help avoid congestion.

He stressed that all policies and decisions which has been will be implemented with immediate effect to prevent possible market fires.

“To achieve that, no person shall sell animals like goats, sheep, and birds in any market unless the place has been designated by the AMA for that purpose,” he warned.

According to him, the AMA task force in conjunction with the Police will take steps to make sure there are no parking or spill over market activities on the streets during market days at Nima and Maamobi markets.

The Accra Mayor further cautioned residents within the Metropolis to desist from illegally blocking roads.

He threatened that the Police will dismantle all canopies if the organizers have not obtained a legal permit to do so.

“It’s illegal for you to get up and just go and block the road,” he fumed.

“I have instructed the Police that with their cooperation, if we come and chance upon any of these activities and if the permit has not been granted, we will quickly dismount and make sure canopies and everything are pulled down so that in case of fire, our fire personnel will have access to move,” he added.

“I am very serious on this issue…let’s do this with a sense of responsibility,” he said.
