The Bawku Police Command has arrested five  persons in connection with a fatal shooting incident which occurred in the town on Wednesday night.

The incident left one Abdulai Aziz; a 24 year old student of the Bawku Senior High School severely injured.

An unidentified person reportedly opened fire on a group of people near Gingande in Bawku on Wednesday evening.

One person was shot in both arms, legs and ribs during the shootout, police say.

The police have so far retrieved about 40 ammunition, 32  used AK shells and one locally manufactured pistol at Zongo, a suburb of the town.

“At Zongo one person was shot in both legs and arms. We rushed him to the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital where he is receiving treatment now. We also have arrested five people in connection with the shooting yesterday. they are in custody and today we are preparing them for court,”he stated.

Expressing concern over the proliferation of weapons in Bawku, Chief Superintendent Lovelace Kaletsi Tefutor said “Bawku is infected with a lot of weapons and when anybody picks a weapon you cannot fathom what they will use it for the next moment. And they spent as much as 32 rounds of AK 47 shell”.

He added that the police are still investigating the incident to ascertain the cause of the sporadic shooting.

The town has recorded similar incidents in recent times.

A similar incident that occurred in the town in November, 2014 led to the arrest of two persons.
