Google has stopped selling the test version of its Google Glass smartglasses and is restructuring management behind the project.

Google said it will be closing the Explorer Program and that 19 January will be the last day to get the Glass Explorer Edition.

The company said that its Glass at Work has been growing and that it will continue to build up the product for the future, hinting that it will be moving more towards business rather than consumer use.

Citing sources, the Financial Times said the company is not backing away from the troubled project, but pushing ahead with a second version.

The first “Explorer edition” was intended as a trial and has achieved its goal of helping the company understand the technology better.

Glass is a product of Google’s X laboratory, which was set up under co-founder Sergey Brin.

The Glass project will now be taken out of the X lab and put under the control of Tony Fadell, a former Apple executive who runs Google’s Nest smarthome division.
