The Environmental Protection Agency [EPA] will head back to court next week to compel the Accra Metropolitan Assembly(AMA) to stop dumping untreated human excreta into the Korle Lagoon.
The EPA went to the Accra High Court in February 2014 to prevent the AMA from discharging human excreta into the sea.
The court gave the AMA seven days to shut down Lavender Hill, a section of the Korle Gonno community with a stench due to the discharge of human excreta into the sea.
[contextly_sidebar id=”6CiiLSPCGhfkCpTidrlhEZXVMWUGA79d”]It also asked the Assembly to comply with the enforcement notice issued by the EPA to build digesters to treat the waste to protect the environment.
However, the AMA pleaded with the court to give it more time to provide an alternative for discharging waste.
The court, presided over by Justice K. A. Ofori Atta, agreed and gave the AMA until the end of 2014 to stop the practice.
However speaking to Citi News, the Executive Director of the EPA, Daniel Amlalo said the AMA had not taken any action to resolve the challenge hence the EPA’s decision to drag the city authority to court.
Amlalo said the decision to head back to court was reached after consultations with the Ministries of Local Government and Rural Development and Environment, Science and Technology.
“We are planning to go back to court early next week to request the court to give directive as to the enforcement because once it is in court, the EPA cannot take any further action until it is resolved, ” he stated.
