Fanny Pachon, who wanted to show a gesture of unity with the bulls, staged the painful stunt as part of her bid to get the sport banned in Colombia.

Meet the anti-bullfighting campaigner who had a world record 2,500 needles stuck in her body as part of her bid to have the sport banned in her home country.

Traditionally, a bullfight involves the matador, or chief performer, killing the animal by impaling it with a sword after a period of taunting it in front of spectators.

But Fanny Pachon, 35, who considers the sport barbaric and cruel, is determined to get it banned in her home nation of Colombia, where she still lives.

As a symbolic gesture of unity with the tortured animal, Fanny decided to allow her own body to be pierced, not by spears, but by 2,500 needles.

She also had a tattoo showing the bloodied head of a bull inked on her arm.

Fanny said: “Me and my colleagues tried for years to get proper exposure to a campaign against bullfighting but it seemed to fall on deaf ears. ”

She added: “We realised we need to do something significant as there are two important dates on the bullfighting calendar coming up here soon.”

According to Fanny, she decided to take more extreme action after her protests in the city of Cartagena, in the Bolivar region, failed to yield results.

In addition, she has challenged matadors to go through the same process, saying: “Torero, if you are so brave, I dare you to feel what the bull feels.”

The needle protest was carried out in front of the City Hall, where a petition had earlier been submitted calling for a ban on bullfighting.

Colombian media say Fanny has broken the Guinness world record for a person with the highest number of needles in her body as the previous holder managed 2,009.

She said: “I am not really interested in the records, I am only interested in helping the animals.”
