About 20 shops are believed to have been affected in the blaze which started around 2pm on Wednesday.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Fire Service, Ellis Okoe Robison, told Citi News that the situation was under control but that the cause of the fire is still unclear.

“For now I must say everything is under control. At the entrance [the fire has been put out] but inside there is smoke coming out of the market. So they [the firefighters] are still pouring water on it” he said.
He also stated that there were indications that one person had died in the fire, reportedly a 12-year-old boy.

This is the latest market fire in the country 2014, following similar incidents at the Kumasi Central market in November and the Tamale grains market earlier in December.
