Some irate residents of Kumbungu in the Northern Region on Tuesday held the district assembly members hostage for rejecting the President’s District Chief Executive (DCE) nominee, Alhassan Musah.

At the end of voting supervised by the Electoral Commission (EC), out of the 34 assembly members, 20 of them approved Mr. Musah while 14 voted against him.

This angered some irate residents of the area who almost attacked the assembly members.

They blocked the entrance to the assembly hall and hurled insults at the assembly members.

The angry residents also  asked the assembly members to return all the goodies they were given to approve Alhassan Musah who happened to be the first Member of Parliament for Kumbungu from 1992 to 1996.

They described government appointees of the assembly as “ungrateful beings” and demanded the immediate termination of their appointments.

Dissatisfied Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna called for calm and hinted at the possibility of the President’s DCE nominee being re-nominated for a second consideration.

Ahead of the confirmation exercise, Alhaji Limuna pleaded with the assembly members to approve the nominee.

A former Member of Parliament (MP) for Kumbungu who is currently the General Secretary of the African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) group, Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni described as unfortunate, the outcome of the confirmation exercise.

He said Kumbungu residents were noted for their unity on all fronts and urged them to rekindle that spirit.

“Right here in Kumbungu, we as people all through the years have been known for our unity, our solidarity with each other and therefore it is really surprising.”

According to Alhaji Mumuni, the DCE nominee had distinguished himself in all spheres of life.

“The candidate himself is not a new comer in politics: he was our first Member of Parliament for the forth Republic and he has distinguished himself even in private life.”
