Vodafone holds on to recovery drive

Vodafone Ghana spends millions to upgrade coverage

Vodafone in the month of October maintained its recovery drive beating competition to emerge as the fastest growing telco in terms of subscribers in Ghana.

It gained about 260,000 new subscribers, the highest in the month.

This is contained in the market share report from the National Communications Authority (NCA) for the month of October 2014.

Vodafone’s voice subscriber base increased from a little below 6.9 million to 7.1 million representing a 3.8% growth.

It now holds about 24% of the market share.

Generally, the number of voice subscribers grew by about 175,000 measuring a little below 1%.

Tigo followed Vodafone in the growth race.

It gained a little under 44,000 subscribers which pushed its base by about 1%.

With a little above 4million subscribers, Tigo commands about 13.5% of the market.

On the other hand, the rest of the telcos recorded declines in subscriber base.

MTN lost the most, giving away about 68,000 subscribers.

This declined its market share marginally to 44.9% representing 13.5million subscribers.

Airtel followed losing a little below 48,000 subscribers.

This declined its subscriber base by about 1.3%.

Airtel now commands about 12.5% of the market represented by 3.7million subscribers.

Glo was the third worse loser.

It lost a little above 9,000 dropping its subscriber base by a little below 1%.

Glo now holds about 4.9% of the total market share which is represented by about 1.5million subscribers.

Expresso continued its losing streak with a loss of a little above 1,900 subscribers.

This reduced its subscriber base by about 1.6%.

With about 118,000 subscribers, Expresso holds about 0.4% of the market share.

Mobile phone penetration in Ghana is now about 112%, with total voice subscribers numbering about 30million, but with a population of about 26.7million people.
