Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe has appointed former Justice Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa as his Vice President.

He will succeed Joice Mujuru who was sacked after being accused of plotting to eliminate President Mugabe.

[contextly_sidebar id=”ejTvEGv4M6ROpHzg1gZRj5A8YH66IpWk”]President Mugabe on Tuesday dismissed seven of his Ministers whom he believed were a threat to his government.

In his first public statement as Vice President, Mr. Mnangagwa is reported to have said: “The revolution has a way of strengthening itself. It goes through cycles, this is another cycle where it rids itself of elements that had now become inconsistent with the correct line,” he is quoted by AFP news agency.

The sacked Vice President, Mrs Mujuru, was reportedly seen as Mr Mnangagwa’s main rival in the battle to take over from President Mugabe in the event of his death or retirement.

But her dismissal has shot down such reports.

Meanwhile, President Mugabe has also appointed a diplomat, Phelekezela Mphoko as his second Vice President.

The Zimbabwean Pesident is due to contest the presidential elections in 2018 despite governing the nation since 1980.
