Anti Corruption Crusader, Sydney Casley-Hayford has advised Parliament to throw out the Youth Employment Bill seeking to give legal backing to the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Agency (GYEEDA) Programme.
The GYEEDA Programme was initially introduced to reduce the burden of youth unemployment in the country but the President, last year, ordered a complete overhaul of GYEEDA’s operations after investigations revealed massive corruption and misuse of public funds under the programme.
[contextly_sidebar id=”rFKEBmUMa67OuKwrjEh1fL2FPiXUOPOB”]A bill on the restructured GYEEDA programme is currently being debated in Parliament despite a number of disagreements between the Majority and Minority Members of Parliament (MPs) over some sections of the Bill.
On Wednesday, the Minority in Parliament kicked against a planned move by government to use about 60% of the talk tax to support GYEEDA.
Speaking on Eyewitness News, Casley-Hayford said funds and resources spent on the programme could have been used for funding other useful programmes and vocations.
“There is no need to set up a GYEEDA at all. The money that was put into GYEEDA could have been used to develop COTVET and all other institutions that needed support in terms of human resource…I think we should just scrap this GYEEDA idea and move into a far better way of managing the little resources we have, “ he suggested.
The Financial Analyst was convinced that government’s decision to set up GYEEDA is needless since Ghana has “more institutions set up to do what GYEEDA is supposed to do.”
“There are other institutions set up by government that have virtually collapsed because they have inadequate resources to sustain operations so there is absolutely no reason on earth why we should be doing another civil service structure …, “ he said.
He therefore advised government to utilise the resources it has rather than “piling up on” mistakes committed in the past.
