Ghanaians are gradually losing confidence in the country’s governance system due to the increasing spate of corruption, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential candidate, Nana Akufo Addo has stated.

According to him, the situation poses a great danger to the country’s peace and security.

Speaking at the 2nd edition of Aliu Mahama Memorial lecture on the theme; One Ghana, Securing the Future, Nana Addo said the “naked theft of public funds will destroy Ghana and her future, if we[Ghanaians] do not take a firm stand against it.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”mVSM5yW1wsvrOybyJl7GqEY9I56Y56Iu”]He said institutions such as the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Police, Attorney General among others have to be reformed and strengthened to deal with the canker.

“We have to deal with it and do so urgently. Our law enforcement agency, Ministries of Justice and Interior, the Police, EOCO ,CHRAJ, the office of the Attorney General, Auditor General have to be reformed and strengthened so they can fulfill their primary goals of ensuring the security of the nation and protecting our population from criminal activity no matter its source.”

“Above all the leadership of the nation; the President, the Vice President, Ministers of State, District Chief Executives, Members of Parliament, Political Leaders, Judges and Magistrates must demonstrate by their example that indeed they are up for the fight,” he added.

There have been calls for President Mahama to sanction various individuals indicted in various acts of corruption following revelations of massive corrupt deals, including the rot at the National Service Secretariat (NSS) that saw the payment of over GHC 70 million to non existent service personnel, and the huge sums of money wasted on the Savannah Accelerated Development Programme among others.

President Mahama has however revealed that  over 300 persons are being prosecuted in the country for the various corrupt acts they indulged in.

He has also charged all Ministries, Department and Agencies to implement the Auditor General’s report asking government to retrieve unaccounted for monies.
