The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has denied being booed by some party supporters during an election in Wa on Saturday.
There were media reports that Mr. Asiedu Nketia was booed at the party’s National Women’s delegates’ congress held in the Upper West Regional capital while he was addressing the delegates before voting began.
[contextly_sidebar id=”1yUnojZMqpH0VFrI8bUQR0ijrV1Xglfx”]Reports also suggested that he deliberately avoided the NDC National Youth Organizer congress in Kumasi, but discounting the claims on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, the NDC’s General Secretary said the Wa congress was rowdy, hence the presumption that he was booed by delegates’.
“They were using vuvuzelas and other things so it was difficult to control the noise. So there are some comments that you make, if it doesn’t go well with the people, they blow the vuvuzelas,” he explained.
He also mentioned that he chose to attend the Wa congress because “I could not have divided myself into two so I had to be at one place.”
“If I had attended Kumasi, the same argument would have come up that my presence in Wa couldn’t have augured well too,” he remarked.
Mr. Asiedu Nketia advised that “these are things you shouldn’t worry yourself about because whatever decisions you take, people who want to create mischief can interpret it one way or the other.”
Confusion at Kumasi Congress
Confusion rocked the NDC’s National Youth Organizer Congress which was held in Kumasi over the weekend.
Some two Deputy National Organizers aspirants raised red flags over the election process and the results.
This prevented the Officers of the Electoral Commission (EC) to declare the results.
According to Mr. Asiedu Nketia, the EC must be allowed to pronounce the results after which the aggrieved aspirants will be given the opportunity to use the proper channel to petition.
“We will compare the content of the petition and against the results that have been given by the EC,” he said.
He admitted that “all the reports show that there was confusion…It is not in contention that there was some amount of violence and I want to condemn that act will all the might I can command.”
He advised the youth in the party to learn how to conduct elections and learn how to direct their grievances through peaceful channels rather than resorting to violence.
Mr. Asiedu Nketia gave the assurance that the matter will be resolved immediately “because the outcome of this youth congress will also affect the national congress…so we will have to work around the clock to get this issue resolved.”
