A Kenyan plane has come down near the Somali town of Kismayo, defence officials told Al Jazeera.

There are reports that the pilot is dead and two of the crew are missing.

Al Jazeera’s Catherine Soi, reporting from Nairobi, said that Kenyan defence forces said in a statement that the jet had developed technical problems after carrying out airstrikes in the southern part of Somalia at around 3:15pm local time.

But she added that a spokesperson from Somalia’s armed group al-Shabab told Al Jazeera that the group had shot down the fighter jet.

“We have to be very careful of this. There is a big propaganda war going on from both sides,” said our correspondent

She added that there were no photos or evidence to back either side’s claims.
