Landlords at Adjen Kotoku have asked the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo to go beyond words of consolation and start investigating why the Ga West Municipal Assembly is taking over their houses.
The Minister resumed work as the Regional Minister this week and has given assurances that no demolitions will take place in the region without his approval.
Since the beginning of the year, there have been frequent demolition in the region by state agencies and private individuals which has rendered hundreds homeless.
The President, John Mahama in his 2014 state of the nation address described the development as harsh and inhuman and subsequently ordered the Ministers of Lands and Natural Resources, the Interior and Local Government and Rural Development to develop guidelines for demolitions in line with the law.
However, the spokesperson of the Adjen Kotoku Landlords Association, Joseph Fankibi has urged the Mr. Afotey-Agbo to put his words into action saying, “what he has said is welcome news by all landlords but beyond the talk, we want to see some action from him.”
He revealed that some land owners are losing their lands to the Ga West Municipal Assembly led by the Member of Parliament for the area.
Mr. Fankibi appealed to the Regional Minister to investigate the matter although the issue is pending in court “and that case should be his reference point to prove to Ghanaians that he is indeed, the people’s man.”
