Six implicated Regional Directors of the National Service Secretariat (NSS) have sued government for their continuous detention by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), after their arrest on Tuesday.
The Directors who were in charge of the Eastern, Northern, Upper East, Volta, Western and Greater Accra regions were arrested over their involvement in an alleged corruption at the NSS which saw the payment of over 7.9 million Cedis to some 22,000 non-existent service personnel in July.
[contextly_sidebar id=”HA6nWZTs8qb6jZUDXxH3ycdabdeAg7qI”]Lawyer for the six, Egbert Faible Jnr. has told citifmonline.com that even though his clients have been assured of their release on Friday, they will still pursue the matter in court.
Explaining the reason for the legal action, Mr. Faible said: “It is illegal and unconstitutional for them to be held in custody for that period.”
Apart from the regional directors who were implicated in the matter, the Governing Board of the NSS directed the Executive Director of the Scheme, Alhaji Alhassan Imoro and his two deputies, Michael Kombor, in charge of Finance & Administration and Sophia Karen Akuako, in charge of Operations to step aside.
Two deputy directors of the NSS have been cleared of any wrongdoing in an interim investigation report.
Alhaji Alhassan Imoro and 23 others were ordered to step aside after investigations revealed that 7.9 million ghana cedis was paid to 22,000 non existent national service personnel in July 2014.
