Armed robbery cases are said to be on the increase on the Damongo-Fufulso-Sawla road in the Northern Region.

The road which has since time immemorial being captured in every national budget is 89 percent complete.

Two Chinese contractors, China Water and China Harbor Engineering Companies Limited are working on the road and the remaining portion to be asphalted is 12 miles.

The slow pace of work on the road has attracted armed robbers who are terrorizing motorists using the road which connects the Northern Region to the Upper West Region.

Majority of the victims are students of WA campus of the University for Development Studies (UDS).

Some of them who reside in Tamale and attend school in WA told Citi News they have on countless occasions being robbed off their belongings and subjected to inhumane acts.

Even government officials are not spared by the Armed Robbers who usually strike late at night on road.

It is against this backdrop the West Gonja District Assembly is building a police station at Busunu to intensify police patrols on the road.

District Chief Executive for West Gonja, Ali Kassim Bakari exclusively told Citi News armed robbery on the road will soon be a thing of the past.

He admonished residents in communities along the road to form citizen vigilante task forces to assist the police in combating crime.

Ali Kassim Bakari further tasked the locals to report suspected criminals in their communities to the police.

Apart from the main Damongo-Fufulso-Sawla road, the West Gonja DCE said the assembly is constructing several feeder roads to link farming communities to the district capital.
