Hundreds of residents, including children of the U-Compound in Tema New Town have demonstrated against the Tema Traditional Council for planning to demolish their properties.
The residents of the U-compound community who are predominantly fishmongers from the Volta Region on Saturday morning wore red arm bands and carried placards to express their displeasure over the Tema Traditional Council’s demolition exercise.
The residents claim they have been settled in the said area earmarked for demolition for over 70 years.
The chairman of the U-Compound Ewe Community Association, Evans Xorve Fiadu in an interview with Citi News explained that residents have had sleepless nights with their families since the announcement of an intended demolishing exercise by the Tema Traditional Council.
He said residents of the U-Compound are not litigating the ownership of the land in question with the traditional Council but are only asking that to be compensated and relocated amicably as they have taken care of the property in question for them for a very long time.
Mr Fiadu noted that the allocated site which the traditional council claims to have given them for relocation is an eyesore and not good for human habitation adding that it is very close to the shore and it is also being used as a refuse dump.
He also called on the traditional council to allow them the opportunity to dialogue so that an amicable arrangement could be arrived at. He further stressed residents are ready to release the property if the traditional council is ready to dialogue with them.
